An American Weredeer in Michigan by C.T Phipps and Michael Suttkus
An American Weredeer in Michigan - Michael Suttkus,C. T. Phipps

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

I had fun with this audiobook! Since I enjoyed the first book in this series, it was a pretty easy decision to pick up this second book. This is a lighter story that moves pretty quickly with a ton of pop culture references that added a nice touch. All in all, this was a pretty enjoyable listen.

This book picks up shortly after the events of the first book. If at all possible, I do recommend reading this series in order. Jane Doe is a weredeer. She has taken on her mother's role as the town shaman. She has been training as much as she can but even Jane will tell you that she still has a lot to learn. This mystery starts when Jane and her best friend Emma find a bunch of infant skeletons. She soon joins forces with a girl connected to the bones named Robin. The mystery was really quite complex and kept me guessing until the very end.

This book was very well balanced. I thought that the characters were well developed and sometimes found where you least expect them to be. I liked that there was a thread of humor in this story with the puns and pop culture references. I think that these moments were well-timed and helped give the story a lighter feel. I thought that there was just the right amount of action woven throughout the book to really keep things moving.

Arielle DeLisle did a great job with the narration. I thought that she really was able to capture Jane's personality and handled the cast of characters very well. She has a very pleasant voice that I had no trouble listening to for longer periods of time.

I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this was a fun story with a great mystery and just the right amount of humor. I look forward to seeing what Jane gets in the middle of next!

I received a review copy of this audiobook from the author.

Review! Nix (Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club # 8) Candace Blevins!

Hello Readers! Today I am visiting with the Rolling Thunder MC to find out if a wolf shifter and deer shifter could possibly together happily ever after! Enjoy and don't for get to add Nix by Candace Blevins to your shelves!

Predator and prey…

Nix recently transferred to Chattanooga from the Asheville RTMC chapter. The MC's new gun store needs someone to teach rifle classes, and Nix was a Special Forces sniper in the military.

Tippy came to Chattanooga to start her life anew. She's a shooter as well, and she won a silver medal at the Olympics, but she uses a different name now and tries to stay out of the limelight. Most deer can't function in human society, but she's found ways to navigate modern life without her deer freezing or running every time something startles her.

Wolves are fiercely monogamous when they fall in love, while deer have trouble understanding the concept of exclusivity. Then there’s the fact wolves eat deer in the wild.

A wolf and a deer madly in love and living happily ever after has to be impossible. Right?

This story originally appeared in the Ridin’ Dirty OAMC anthology.

Werewolves are fiercely monogamous and deer have trouble understanding the concept of exclusivity and then there’s the fact that wolves eat deer in the wild. Can Nix and Tippy find a happily ever after?

This novella is a sweet but passionate and pretty darn cute. The characters are strong and thoroughly charming in their own unique way as they navigate everything that stands in the way of their relationship. The chemistry is undeniable and sizzles with lots electrical chemistry that singes readers with its intensity and the intimate scenes are blazing hot, so while this romance is on the short side, it fulfills all readers expectations of what they enjoy from the ‘Rolling Thunder MC’ members.

Candace Blevins has published more than forty books. She lives with her husband of 20 years and their two daughters. When not working or driving young teens all over the place, she can be found reading, writing, meditating, or swimming. The family’s beloved, goofy, retired racing greyhound is usually at her side as she writes, quietly keeping her company.

Candace writes Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Contemporary BDSM Romance, and a kick-ass Motorcycle Club series.

Her urban fantasy series, Only Human, gives us a world where weredragons, werewolves, werelions, and three different species of vampires exist, as well as a variety of other mythological beings.

Candace’s two paranormal romance series, The Chattanooga Supernaturals and The Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Club, are both sister series to the Only Human books, and gives some secondary characters their happily ever after. Her three paranormal series are written so you can read one series, or all three, should you prefer only a particular genre.

Her Safeword Series gives us characters who happen to have some extreme kinks. Relationships can be difficult enough without throwing power exchange into the mix, and her books show characters who care enough about each other to fight to make the relationship work. Each book in the Safeword series highlights a couple with a different take on the lifestyle.

An American Weredeer in Michigan by Phipps & Suttkus
An American Weredeer in Michigan - Michael Suttkus,C. T. Phipps

Note: Even though this is Book 2 in the series, it works just fine as a stand alone story.

Can we say that a grave full of children’s bones is just the thing to get Jane’s blood up! She’s certainly not one to sit back and not investigate this. She’s working with her trusty sidekick, Emma the wolfshifter, and a new character, Robyn. She’s pretty hot about the bones as well and willing to take out a deity or two to prevent any further children being discarded.

What I loved most about this book was the quick back and forth pop culture references and even insults among friends. I also found it amusing how Jane and her friends tackle racism against shifters with two more new characters, Larry and Yolanda. They are Hunters and Michigan doesn’t allow hunting of shifter animals. So they are obviously outside their jurisdiction but they do have some useful skills. Besides, Alex is friends with them (which Jane finds hard to stomach sometimes).

The hunt for answers was my second favorite element of the story. It’s a murder mystery with fantasy elements and Robyn is ready to go off half cocked. She wants vengeance, not justice and Jane foolishly allowed herself to get maneuvered into promising to help her. This is a very big deal for the supernatural community because if you can’t keep your word, then you have very little coin in that community.

I did find the romance element a little silly. Jane is dating Alex, but in the past she kinda saw his brother Lucien, but apparently there’s been some miscommunication because Lucien sees things differently. Anyhoo, it’s made things all kinds of awkward for Jane, much to the amusement of her friends and frenemies. At first, it was cute, but then I felt it was brought up more than necessary. I was all into the action, the murder, the vengeance! That’s what I wanted. 4.5/5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book. My opinions are wholly my own.

The Narration: Arielle DeLisle was awesome in narrating this book. She’s perfect for our main character Jane and I love her wide variety of voices for all the other characters. She does Yolanda’s older, jaded voice quite well. I liked her doggy voice for Emma when she’s in wolf form. Her male voices sounded masculine. There were no technical issues with this recording. 5/5 stars.

I Was a Teenage Weredeer by C.T Phipps and Michael Suttkus
I Was a Teenage Weredeer - Michael Suttkus,C. T. Phipps

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

This was entertaining. I am not going to lie - the thing that really caught my attention about this book was the title. Weredeer? Have I ever read a book about a weredeer? Of course not so you know I had to give this book a try just to find out more about this weredeer. It ended up being a really clever story with some great world-building. I am glad that I took a chance on this fun little story.

Jane Doe is a weredeer. I should probably mention that there are little bits of humor sprinkled all over this story as you may have guessed as soon as you saw Jane's name. Anyway, Jane's family owns a local diner where Jane works as a waitress alongside other members of her family. Since Michigan is one of only two states that are safe for shifters, the town of Bright Falls has a rather large shifter population. Jane's best friend is a werewolf and there are all kinds of colorful characters around town.

Jane learns that her best friend's sister has been killed and that her brother has been accused of the murder and decides to investigate. Weredeers often have special abilities and Jane is able to gather a lot of knowledge just by touching objects. Jane and her best friend hope that her special abilities will make finding out what really happened a simple task. Of course, things quickly get complicated and they find themselves uncovering a mystery that goes back quite a few years.

I liked Jane. I thought she was pretty brave to get involved with everything and she was never afraid of asking the hard questions. It was fun to watch her try to figure everything out. There were a lot of other characters in the book and I liked most of them. I did find it a bit difficult to keep everyone straight at times since there were so many characters that had a role. I did think it was odd that Jane's parents were almost always referred to as Judy and John instead of Mom and Dad.

I thought that Arielle DeLisle did a great job with this story. This was the first time that I have had the chance to listen to this narrator and I was impressed by her delivery. I thought that she was able to bring Jane to life and added a lot of emotion and excitement to the story. I wouldn't hesitate to listen to her work again in the future.

I would recommend this book to others. I had a lot of fun with it and found myself chuckling from time to time. There were a lot of pop culture references and puns worked into the story that kept everything rather light. I felt that the ending of this book was pretty satisfying but I may decide to pick up the second book at some point in the future.

I received a review copy of this audiobook from the author via Audiobook Boom.

Initial Thoughts
I found the book to be quite clever and enjoyed learning about the world that it was set in. I have to admit that the idea of a weredeer is what really made me want to pick up this book and Jane was even more interesting that I could have expected her to be. There were some parts of the book that had me chuckling and I thought the narrator did a fantastic job with the story so it was a good overall reading experience.

Review: I Was a Teenage Weredeer by Phipps & Suttkus
I Was a Teenage Weredeer - Michael Suttkus,C. T. Phipps

The puns! The murders! The romantic entanglements! All that wereshifting! This was a very fun listen. Jane’s best friend, Emma, is from a different shifter clan but they are still as close as sisters. When Emma’s flesh and blood sister (Victoria) dies, Jane’s brother is the primary suspect. Jane goes on the hunt for clues, not trusting the authorities to catch the real killer. The FBI gets in on this murder as well and Jane has to work with the kinda spacey Alex Timmons.

The plot draws in more interesting characters, like a vampire coroner and the local drug dealer/gangster Lucian. Some witches pop up and Judy Doe’s shaman abilities come into play. Jane has some internal conflict with her parents’s expectations that she continue on in the shamanistic tradition. The action never ends and the story is never boring.

Be prepared for plenty of nerd culture references. Being a self-identified nerd, I reveled in this most of the time. Though there were a few moments when it felt like the authors were trying to shoehorn in just one too many nerdy references. Then there are the puns. They lurk around every corner. Most of the time, they gave me a chuckle but sometimes it was a groan. The story could be a touch too punny at times.

There’s a smidge of romance as there are 2 or 3 guys interested in Jane. I found this to be the true weak spot of the story. I don’t need Jane to be the center of romance with so many people at one time. She’s got enough on her plate as it is, trying to prove her brother innocent and all.

Over all, it was a fun light read and I enjoyed it thoroughly. 4/5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book.

The Narration: Arielle DeLisle was a great pick for this story. She sounds just like a young Jane weredeer. DeLisle also did a wonderful job with all the emotions being tossed around in the story. She had distinct voices for all the characters though I felt her male characters would sometimes use a touch more masculinity. I also liked the variety of accents and growls and such she performed. 4.5/5 stars.
