Totally agree with Themis-Athena on this. Westerns are NOT Steampunk, and most aficionados would be horrified to see them there! ;-) It's really a whole separate art form and needs a genre category.

Not arguing against Westerns needing their own genre; they do.

But "set in 19th century particularly in the American West and Victorian Great Britain" is generally accepted as the definition of steampunk -- only in the last few years or so has steampunk become so predominantly seen/used as science fiction and fashion. There are western books and shows that I actually would personally also classify as steampunk, generally some time travel ones and things like the tv show "Wild, Wild West" -- but, that's because I always think of the at the time SF aspects like steam power, gadgets, clockwork, a general Jules Verne type of feel being steampunk rather than just the time period and fashions. Frontier gals more likely to be in homemade calico cottons than what fashion normally gets called steampunk.
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/steampunk:
steampunk
or steam punk, steam-punk
[steem-puhngk]
noun
a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy featuring advanced machines and other technology based on steam power of the 19th century and taking place in a recognizable historical period or a fantasy world.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk:
Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Although its literary origins are sometimes associated with the cyberpunk genre, steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century's British Victorian era or American "Wild West", in a future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power.

So, no, definitely not steampunk by definition.

1. Steampunk is scifi / fantasy.
2. Steampunk is alternative history. Westerns are set in the actual world of the 19th (or 20th!) century. They take the history of the American West as it actually was.
Thanks for your remarks. We'll take that into consideration.

All of which are newer definitions and even potentially crowdsourced. And kind if a moot point because I agree Westerns should have their own genre and traditionally don't have elements I consider steam punk.

Thank you so much! (Not just Western Fiction, but the categories mentioned in the recent discussion on the previous page of this thread as well?)
Prime examples of authors of the western genre are Zane Grey, Louis L'amour, Max Brand, Larry McMurtry etc... Nothing to do with steampunk.
In my previous post, I mentioned there was another needed genre I couldn't remember - it was WESTERNS! Thanks Linda! :D

I think we might also need a "Nature" category; I'm seeing a lot of books come through along the lines of "Wolves", which are neither Science, nor Gardening/Botany.
Another additional category needed: Archaeology/Paleontology/Prehistory.

I can't post a screen shot here, but . . . . .

I just tried to post another edition to this book
http://booklikes.com/mexico-from-the-olmecs-to-the-aztecs-ancient-peoples-and-places-michael-d-c/book,11495316

When I scroll down to the Genres section, it shows the current edition listed as
Anthropology
History
Textbook.

Neither "Anthropology" nor "Textbook" is an available category.

This is very frustrating. VERY frustrating.

Linda: Books that come through as automated imports bring their genre/subject tags with them, whether they're in our list or not. Sometime it's helpful (as in your example, or when cozy mysteries come through with 'cozy mystery'), and other times not so helpful, like "book club", or "high school reading list".

We definitely need a re-vamped genre list, but it's hard not to end up with a list that's unruly. (In my perfect world, we'd have two lists, one for fiction and one for non-fiction.)
Please, please bring back shelving from Amazon, or another site. Adding comics one by one is a /pain/.

Oh, we know :/ Sorry about that! The Shelve it should be working from amazon.co.uk. The amz.com connection is examined by our IT team right now, we're hoping it will be back shortly. Sorry!!!

Thank you! Glad to hear it. I had stopped updating my reviews because I need to catch up today and just knowing the UK site should work is fabulous. I can totally do that, thanks!
Can we please, please, please get a "sort" feature that distinguishes by author first name within author last name?
