Hark! The Herald Angels Scream
Hark! The Herald Angels Scream - Christopher Golden

by Christopher Golden

A collection of Christmas stories in the Horror genre was just too good of an idea to pass up! This one is a collection of 18 stories by a variety of authors. I had actually heard of three of them and read something by two of those, which gave me confidence of a certain level of writing.

To be honest, not all of the stories held up to expectation but enough of them did to make the collection worthwhile. Just two of them were written in present tense, which I find difficult to read, and two others were written in second person, which I don't see often.

There were some interesting ideas explored; zombie elves, creepy children, melting babies, obsessive or robot pets, a great twist on revenge, and an abusive husband returning from the dead among others.

The stand outs for me were Love Me by Thomas E. Sniegoski, Not Just For Christmas by Sarah Lotz, It's A Wonderful Life by Christopher Golden, The Second Floor of the Christmas Hotel by Joe R. Lansdale and Darrow Street by Elizabeth Hand.

Also very worthwhile were Fresh as the New-Fallen Snow by Seaman McGuire, Good Deeds by Jeff Strand (a very humorous entry), Mistletoe and Holly by James A. Moore, Home by Tim Lebbon and The Hangman's Bride by Sarah Pinborough.

The collection is definitely worthwhile for the Horror fan.

Review ~ Awesome!
The Pandora Room (Ben Walker #2) - Christopher Golden

4.5

Book source ~ NetGalley

Ben Walker, employee of The National Science Foundation (lol, not really - he actually secretly works for DARPA) and survivor of the Mount Ararat incident (among others that are secret) is called in when weird shit is found at an archaeological dig in Northern Iraq. Because that’s what DARPA (The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) does – investigates natural and unnatural phenomena in case it could be dangerous and used against the US and obtain it if at all possible. In Mosul he meets up with Kim Seong who works as an advisor and observer for the United Nations. She and Walker had survived the horror of Ararat and if they’re both at this dig, then the weird shitometer is likely about to bury the needle. Will Lady Luck shine on them again?

I thought my heebie jeebies had all been heebie jeebied out when I finished Ararat. Wrong! Sweet Mother of Pearl! Walker and Kim step into yet again. Archaeologist Sophie Durand has been at her dig, The Beneath Project, for months when a small room is discovered off a worship chamber inside the underground city. And off of that hidden room is another hidden room. One that should never have been found by anyone. Ever. Because man, oh man. It’s bad. Ever hear of Pandora’s Box? Yeah, that box. Only, it’s actually a jar. I mean, if it really is Pandora’s Box/Jar. Because, is it? Oh! But guess what? There’s more! When the dig is attacked by jihadists, Ben, Kim, and dig workers have to deal with bullets topside and the jar in the city underneath. You’ll have to decide which option is the worst. Because EEEEEEEEE!

Keep hands and feet inside the car at all times and stay strapped in until the very end because this is one wild ride! Near non-stop action, heart palpitating danger, mysterious happenings, horrifying deaths, and danger to the extreme had me gritting my teeth and leaning anxiously forward in my seat on more than one occasion. Great setting, wonderful characters (I worried so much as to who would survive), history, action, danger, and horror. It doesn’t get much better than this folks.

Reading progress update: I've read 74%.
The Pandora Room (Ben Walker #2) - Christopher Golden

Oh, man. I thought the shit hit the fan earlier, but I didn't know how much shit there was left or how big the fan is. I'm now questioning how many of these characters, that I've come to like, are going to make it out alive. Having read the 1st book, I'm worried the answer is: very few.

The Pandora Room
The Pandora Room (Ben Walker #2) - Christopher Golden
Title: The Pandora Room
Series: Ben Walker #2

Author: Christopher Golden

Author's Website:
St.Martin's Press
Genre:Horror, thriller http://www.christophergolden.com/
Pages

Book 1 :
Title: Ararat
When a newly engaged couple climbs Mount Ararat in Turkey, an avalanche forces them to seek shelter inside a massive cave uncovered by the snow fall. The cave is actually an ancient, buried ship that many quickly come to believe is really Noah’s Ark. When a team of scholars, archaeologists, and filmmakers make it inside the ark for the first time, they discover an elaborate coffin in its recesses. The artifact tempts their professional curiosity; so they break it open. Inside, they find an ugly, misshapen cadaver—not the holy man that they expected, a hideous creature with horns. A massive blizzard blows in, trapping them in that cave thousands of meters up the side of a remote mountain…but they are not alone.

The Pandora Box

When what appears to be the original Pandora's Box is discovered in an ancient city, neighboring countries fight for ownership and unleash a terrible plague.

The Pandora Room is New York Times bestselling author Christopher Golden's chilling exploration of what happens when the original Pandora's Box is discovered in an ancient subterranean city, stirring international conflict and exposing the archaeological team to curses, whispers, and the terror of a legendary plague.

In one ancient variation on the myth of Pandora's Box, there were two jars, one for Pandora and one for her sister, Anesidora. One contained all the blessings of the gods, the other all the world's curses. Now, in a subterranean city in Northern Iraq, archaeologist Sophie Durand has discovered a secret chamber covered in writing that confirms that version of the tale--a chamber which contains a single jar. "Weird shit" expert Ben Walker joins Sophie's team just as the mystery deepens and grows ugly. Those who believe the myth want to know which jar has been found in the Pandora Room, the one containing blessings, or the one full of curses. Governments rush to lay claim, but jihadi forces aren't waiting for the dust to settle. Whatever the jar contains, they want it, no matter who they have to kill...or what will emerge when they open it. For Sophie, Walker, and the others, the Pandora Room may soon become their tomb.

My thoughts
rating:
Would I recommend it: yes
Will I read more of this series? yes
This was sent to me unsolicited from St.Martin's Press, and wow what a story, I would have to say the series is getting better and better , and this is only book , in book 1 Ararat you find that the story takes place in the  Mount Ararat in Turkey and having to deal with snow storms and avalanches , here in The Pandora Box you join Ben and his friends as they go to a underground secret chamber in Northern Iraq,  have to deal with the danger of cave-ins, jihadi , and what ever is in said jar, and the more they don't know the more it becomes clear that everyone and anyone want its, and that the jar its self is just as dangerous by its self maybe even more so then the ones that want it, as I was reading it ,it reminded me of a movie I like called Ghost of Mars ,this story had some of the same aspects of that movie which I loved , and the writing still reminds me of something that James Rollins would write . It was so much more then I thought it would be. It didn't disappoint me at all , which I started reading I had to keep reading, had to see what was in said the jar so to speak, had to see if it was as dark and dangerous as they thought it was going to be, and the more I read the more I kept thinking nope I don't want to be a room with it or any where it is, it was like you could feel the evil coming off the page itself , and that's a good thing, because I love finding authors who can make their stories some to life as well as their characters, make you feel everything the characters feel . With that said I would love to think Allison, as well as St,Martin's Press and Netgalley for letting me read and review it exchange for my honest opinion , and the ending wow just wow didn't see that coming, now i can't wait for the next one to come out and I really want to set down and re read this one and the first one back to back .Once again thank you so much.

Alien series from Audible Originals
Alien: Out of the Shadows - Tim Lebbon
Alien: River of Pain - Christopher Golden
Alien - Sea of Sorrows - James A. Moore

Out of the Shadows -

I really enjoyed this performance; the story, characters, sound effects, and music all came together perfectly. I felt like I was listening to a movie. The atmosphere is amazingly scary and claustrophobic. And as others have said, the woman who voiced Ripley was perfect. I liked how they created a brand new story that took place between Alien and Aliens (the movies) and I liked the explanation for it. Overall a very entertaining listen that will be fun for any fans of the Alien universe.

River of Pain -

The overall production of this one was great with the same claustrophobic, scary atmosphere as the first. But I didn't love the story or the characters as much.  Still entertaining, but just not as original or interesting.

Sea of Sorrows -

This was my least favorite of the three. I just didn't buy the distant descendant of Ripley having a psychic connection to the xenomorphs. I also didn't like any of the characters. I didn't connect with any of them and found myself waiting for them to die.

All that being said, I flew through these books. I found myself always wanting to listen to them, even though they are all basically the same formula:

- Humans go where they shouldn't or mess with things beyond their understanding

- The humans are somehow connected to Weyland-Yutani (which is greedy for money, power, or both, without regard for human life)

- An android works against the humans in service of Weyland-Yutani or in rare cases helps them

- The xenomorphs come and the humans underestimate them

- There is a lone survivor (or maybe a select few)

Anyway, if you are a fan of the Alien movies, these stories are a fun revisit to the universe - and might make you want to watch all the movies again (like I did last weekend).
