July 2018 Round- Up and Giveaway

I can't believe we already are in August. This year is just flying by so fast. July was an okay month reading-wise not great but not bad either I got most of my reads in and are doing fairly well with keeping up on the review-copies.

Beginning of the month was a bit wonky, since I had some heath issues to deal with, but that is all cleared up and I'm as good as new if not better, but that of course took some reading time away from me. But I was happy to see not as much as I thought it would lol. I got most of my ARCs done, now I just need to get around posting my reviews lol.

August I will leave open for goals, since some great books are coming to us in August and some I've been waiting on what feels like forever.

Here are some of the books I'm looking forward to:

Until We're More by Cindi Madsen

40954477

My Kinda Forever by Lacey Black

40848015

Catwoman by Sarah J. Maas

Catwoman: Soulstealer (DC Icons, #3)

17333180

Now the book I look most forward but also the least is Magic Triumphs by Ilona Andrews , the final book in the Kate Daniels Series. I can;t wait to see how it is all wrapped up, but at the same time I will be sad to see the series end. It is one of my all time favorite series after all.

        36457735

One series ends another starts. We get a new book, in a brand new series from Chloe Neill, Wild Hunger. It's a spin-off series of the Chicagoland series and will follow Elisa, the Daughter of Ethan and Merit. But also Connor  who is Gabriel Keene's son. I already had the pleasure to read the ARC and can tell to you guys it is amazing and surprisingly fresh for being in the same world. I loved it and can't wait to own a copy and add them next to all the other Chicagoland books :)

The Mime Order (The Bone Season, #2)

Currently I'm still slowly working on The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon, it really is a great book so I'm not sure what is taking me so long other than I don't have much time and am reading more than one book at the time ;) But I'm almost done with it

    8667848

I'm also reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, which is okay.

            13455782

Next I was thinking, taking a book I had on my TBR forever before I dive into some August and review copies, I think I will start Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi, we shall see.

Don't forget to check out the "Summer Lovin’ Readers Giveaway" that is going on, you can find it here or you can just enter on the raffelcopter below that I will add for you there again ;)

Okay now to finally to my July reads. You will be able to find the buy links in the "Reviews" that are linked with each book :)

Happy Reading and hope you have a great August.

The Rending and the Nest by Kaethe Schwehn

When ninety-five percent of the world’s population disappears for no apparent reason, Mira does what she can to create some semblance of a life: She cobbles together a haphazard community named Zion, scavenges the Piles for supplies they might need, and avoids loving anyone she can’t afford to lose. Four years after the Rending, Mira has everything under control. Almost.

Then Mira’s best friend, Lana, announces her pregnancy, the first in this strange world and a new source of hope for Mira. But Lana gives birth to an inanimate object—and soon other women of Zion do, too—and the thin veil of normalcy Mira has thrown over her new world begins to fray. As the community wrestles with the presence of these Babies, a confident outsider named Michael appears, proselytizing about the world outside Zion. He lures Lana away and when she doesn’t return, Mira has to decide how much she’s willing to let go in order to save her friend, her community, and her own fraught pregnancy.

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives

Our Dark Duet by Victoria Schwab

THE WORLD IS BREAKING. AND SO ARE THEY. KATE HARKER isn’t afraid of monsters. She hunts them. And she’s good at it. AUGUST FLYNN once yearned to be human. He has a part to play. And he will play it, no matter the cost. THE WAR HAS BEGUN. THE MONSTERS ARE WINNING. Kate will have to return to Verity. August will have to let her back in. And a new monster is waiting—one that feeds on chaos and brings out its victims’ inner demons. Which will be harder to conquer: the monsters they face, or the monsters within?

The Prophecy by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Seth never thought he’d have a future. But now he’s on the brink of having it all with Josie: A tomorrow. A family. A forever. And all that’s standing between him and that forever is the Titans. If he helps Josie entomb them — without killing them, a nearly impossible task for him — everything he could ever want will be in reach. But he soon realizes that as a god, every little choice he makes can reshape the world for the better… or worse. And in meddling with the Titans, Seth may have just set into motion catastrophic consequences that will force the Olympians to enter the mortal realm and reshape the delicate balance of power that keeps the world from total collapse.

A price must be paid…

Entombing the Titans is Josie’s top priority. After all, it was what she was born to do. But the plans her father put into play to help her are no longer an option, and the odds she and Seth face in forging their own path are grim. The escalating violence between halfs and pures only increases the danger closing in on them and their friends. Josie knows their chances of succeeding in their task are slim at best — and if they fail, they might lose everything. But she also knows she’s not fighting just for herself — she’s fighting for the man she loves, for their future, for the world. Together with the Army of Awesome, Josie and Seth will face the unthinkable. And to win this war, the ultimate sacrifice must be made.

For the end is here and the Prophecy will be fulfilled…

Sail Away by Celia Imrie

The phone hasn’t rung for months. Suzy Marshall is discovering that work can be sluggish for an actress over sixty—even for the star of a wildly popular 1980s TV series. So when her agent offers her the plum role of Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest in Zurich, it seems like a godsend. Until, that is, the play is abruptly cancelled under suspicious circumstances and Suzy is forced to take a job on a cruise ship to get home.

Meanwhile Amanda Herbert finds herself homeless in rainy Clapham. The purchase of her new apartment has fallen through, and her children are absorbed in their own dramas. Then she spots an advertisement for an Atlantic cruise and realizes that three weeks onboard would tide her over and save her money until her housing situation is resolved.

As the two women set sail on a new adventure, neither can possibly predict the questionable characters and strange dealings they will encounter, nor the unexpected rewards they will reap. Vividly evoking the old-world glamour of a cruise ship—and the complex politics of its staff quarters—Sail Away is at once a hilarious romp and a thrilling adventure.

July 2017 Round-Up with Book-Haul and Giveaway

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a great July and  hope you enjoying the summer and some good books. Again, I can't believe how fast the month went by, and that should mean something considering the kids are home every day, all day.

Image result for kids fighting gif

By some miracle I actually got some reading done and only one was a ARC, so that was kind of nice. But I know I have some coming up here really soon that I'm looking forward to. I don't have any real plans for August yet and think I just go with the flow and see what I can find on my shelve ;)

Here are some releases for August according to Goodreasds:

August first Brave New Girls: Stories of Girls Who Science and Scheme and Dragonsworn by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

On August 8th The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter.

The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter by Theodora Goss on August 10th.

August 15th Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popović

August 23rd Molten Dusk by Karissa Laurel.

Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller, The Dazzling Heights by Katharine McGee, Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo and Wild Ride Cowboy by Maisey Yates on August 29th.

So I don't have one giant book haul every once a while I will try to post one at least every couple months with the round-up. I hope I can stick with it and don't forget them all too often.

Here is my book haul for June and July

Here are the hard hard copies I got. From the publishers to review I got:

Dark Water by Parker Bilal

Down Home Cowboy by Maisey Yates

A finished copy of Kiss my Boots by Harper Sloan, I previously received the unfinished galley from them.

I won a copy of The Crowns of Croswald by D.E. Night.

I bought The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas , Fairest by Marissa Meyer, White Trash Zombie Gone Wild by Diana Rowland, Midnight Crossroad, Day Shift and Night Shift by Charlaine Harris.

For e-copies I won both books

Lie by Mayra Statham and Lukas by F. G. Adams.

I have a couple books ordered and coming but they will not be here before August so I will add them to that one.

Anyway, we still have the giveaway going on and I will add the copter to the bottom as usual.

Here are my books for July, as always you can find the buy links in the reviews that are linked down below.

I hope you all have a wonderful August :)

Down Home Cowboy by Maisey Yates

This Texas cowboy has come home to Copper Ridge to put down roots…but will he risk his heart again?

Asked where he’d be at this point in life, Cain Donnelly would have said anywhere but Copper Ridge, Oregon, living with his estranged brothers. But since his wife abandoned them, both he and his daughter, Violet, are in need of a fresh start, so he’s back to claim his share of the family ranch. Local baker Alison Davis is a delicious temptation, but she’s also his daughter’s mentor and new boss. That makes her off-limits…until she offers a no-strings deal that no red-blooded cowboy could resist.

Alison has worked tirelessly to rebuild her life, and she won’t jeopardize her hard-won independence. Especially if it also complicates Cain’s relationship with Violet. But with Cain offering a love she never thought was possible, Alison has to find the courage to let her past go…or watch her future ride away for good.

Up From the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

Lately, life has been unnaturally calm for vampires Cat Crawfield and her husband Bones. They should have known better than to relax their guard, because a shocking revelation sends them back into action to stop an all-out war…

A rogue CIA agent is involved in horrifying secret activities that threaten to raise tensions between humans and the undead to dangerous heights. Now Cat and Bones are in a race against time to save their friends from a fate worse than death… because the more secrets they unravel, the deadlier the consequences. And if they fail, their lives—and those of everyone they hold dear — will be hovering on the edge of the grave.

Midnight Crossroad  by Charlaine Harris

From Charlaine Harris, the bestselling author who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, comes a darker locale – populated by more strangers than friends. But then, that’s how the locals prefer it…

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth…

Lukas by F.G. Adams

Oh, the foolish games we play.

The moment I was gifted a test drive of the luscious Sage Blackwood, I knew she was mine. I was broken, half a man, until she pieced me back together. She changed my world forever with her magnetic humor and hot body. Sage is an expert of subterfuge. Her logic overrules her cravings. It doesn’t matter if she feels the same; I’m the master at games and puzzles. And I’ll win this game in the end. I always do.

Oh, the tangled webs we weave.

Pushing the wrong buttons is Lukas Rogers’ forte. Except he presses all the right ones when he’s sending me to heaven with each and every delicious touch. But I can’t give him what he wants. I will never give myself completely to another. It just doesn’t work in my world. I bury those dreams deep. My job connected us. Now this powerful bond scares me. My body desires to cling to what Lukas offers, while my mind is telling me to run away.

Far.

Fast.

Forever.

White Trash Zombie Gone Wild  by Diana Rowland

Angel Crawford has buried her loser past and is cruising along in undead high gear--that is, until a murder-by-decapitation sends her on a hazardous detour. As Angel hunts for the killer, she uncovers a scheme that would expose zombies to the public and destroy the life she's built, and she's determined not to rest until she finds out who's behind it.

Soon she's neck-deep in lies, redneck intrigue, zombie hunters, and rot-sniffing cadaver dogs. It's up to her to unravel the truth and snuff out the conspiracy before the existence of zombies makes headline news and she's outed as a monster.

But Angel hasn't quite escaped the pill-popping ghosts of her past--not with an illicit zombie pharmaceutical at her fingertips. Good thing she's absolutely sure she can handle the drug's unpredictable side effects and still take down the bad guys...or maybe she's only one bad choice away from being dead meat--for real this time.

Angel knows a thing or two about kicking ass, but now the ass she needs to kick might be her own.

Reading progress update: DNF at 19%.
Outlaw (Rebel Stars Book 1) - Edward W. Robertson

I pushed myself to keep going several times but have finally given up. At times it was very well written and interesting but eventually I could not get by the bad descriptions that periodically cropped up:

"...motors whirred and clunked."

"...an orchestra of clicks, whirrs and beeps..."

" A high-pitched boop..." Is 'boop' even a word?

Is there no better description for engines than 'whirrs"? This is used regularly and I can't get by it...

July Round Up
Where Angels Fear to Tread - E.M. Forster
Blood and Chocolate - Annette Curtis Klause
Outlander - Diana Gabaldon
Arsenic and Old Lace - Acting Edition - Joseph Kesselring
The Cornell Woolrich Omnibus: Rear Window and Other Stories / I Married a Dead Man / Waltz into Darkness - Cornell Woolrich
The Philadelphia Story - Philip Barry
Chocolat - Joanne Harris
The Art of War - Thomas Cleary,Sun Tzu
Warm Bodies - Isaac Marion
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee

This post is a bit late because I went to the beach with my family last week, but July was been an exceptionally good reading month for me! I think it's partially because the wedding's over and I'm not currently working, so I've really been able to sit down and read a lot, but also I've just gotten lucky with my reading choices - so many of the books I read this month have been amazing!

I read 11 books this month (not shown is The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which I re-read with my book club). Well, 2 were plays and 1 was a short story, but anyway - 10 pieces of literature. I didn't finish one of the books on my list, Anna Karenina, but I'm re-reading that in preparation for my book club's read of that (they're actually currently reading it, but it's on our longer reads list so I'm reading it a bit ahead of them as I prep their reading guide questionnaires), so I wasn't too upset about not finishing that. I also missed reading The Maze Runner, which disappointed me, but I've requested it from my library so I'll read it eventually. I did read Blood and Chocolate and To Kill a Mockingbird, which were not on my list, so that's a good thing!

Favorite Book in July:
It is SO hard for me to pick an absolute favorite this month, because I read SO many great books! Out of the books that I haven't read before, Outlander by Diana Gabaldon is definitely my favorite, but To Kill a Mockingbird is also fantastic.

Least Favorite Book in July:

Again, these books are all so good that it's hard for me to really say which was my least favorite... but I'm going to go with Where Angels Fear to Tread, because I'd actually completely forgotten about it until I went back through my records to write this post. Whoops, haha. If it's forgettable, then it's definitely not as good as the others!

Have you read any of the books that I read last month? What were your favorite books for July?
