Contemporary Fantasy:
*These terms are used to describe stories set in the putative real world (often referred to as consensus reality) in contemporary times, in which magic and magical creatures exist, either living in the interstices of our world or leaking over from alternate worlds. The plotThe open scene of this book is beautiful! Shane will discover something unbelievable... the human world is not what he always though... human. With us, watching us, surrounding is there are... faeries, magic creatures... and one choose him to be more than what he is.
The romanceI would warn you to keep away from this book if you have something against instant love. Because it's exactly what happened... Shane and Cody love is not just instant but intense and so strong nothing can separate them, neither a faerie war.
It's a 5 stars book, and yeah I'm giving 3. Why?Because I'm always bitching about something
Because I had TWO problems with this book, and it made me think even if it deserve my 5 stars I can't give it.
My FIRST problems is how Cody felt in love with Shane. I tried... I reeeeeeeally tried and wish i could say it in another way, but for me Cody is very shallow. What I'm saying it? He is attracted to the NEW and more than human boy, not the human boy he tormented for years at school.
He is attracted to Shane, because of WHO he is, or because of HOW he looks?. I couldn't answer this question... there is not a single evidence to make me believe it's not because Shane is almost a faerie and beautiful as all faeries are, calling attention of ALL, not just Cody in school, something that NEVER happened before (while he was just human).
BUT this problem is my personal problem with a lot of stories, and I think I would not complain about it. Many stories have it... characters that look to another because he start to look better, be stronger, be beautiful.
My SECOND and REAL problems is something called common sense.
Let me explain it better.
I start this story adding the wikipedia definition of contemporary fantasy. In this genre fantasy creatures and our world are mixed, and you can't separate them. Magic and our normal worlds are entwined, twist together.
So, this is TOTALLY personal opinion but THIS will make me give 3 not 5 stars to this book: it's common sense, that even in stories like this one
some REAL horror facts from our history can't be added in a Story. What the hell I'm talking about?
I believe it's a matter or COMMON SENSE that compare the holocaust and the killing of natives to what could happen to faeries is wrong.... very wrong.... because, the
the genocide of approximately 6 million Jews during World War II and the
death of 1 million to 18 million natives (estimates of the pre-Columbian population of what today constitutes the U.S. vary significantly, ranging from 1 million to 18 million) are not
facts to be used to compare to faeries dying in a fantasy book!!!This sad analogy was used, more than one times in this book, and the two times Cody's grandmother said it I cringe... literally. I think it's sooooo wrong to add it... I know, it's a contemporary fantasy. I know, real and magic world and facts are entwined but I think some facts should be cited or used more seriously in a story, if the aim is to teach someone about those horribles facts... not used to explain how can faeries disappear.
Because faeries are magic beings... the six million Jews in the holocaust and the 18 million natives where humans... our brothers. And we should honor their deaths and always remember to LEARN about such tragedies, using common sense to know when and how it should OR NOT be mentioned.
