WOULD-BE WITCH by KIMBERLY FROST
Would-Be Witch - Kimberly Frost

Wow, I just did not enjoy this book at all. The main character is just walked all over by seemingly everyone and just takes it. When she finds out who did her wrong or confronts people who are overly mean, she does pretty much nothing except mumble under her breath. Now, if it were me, there would be a HUGE amount of swearing, some cake throwing or whatever is handy, maybe hair pulling and scratching faces of a certain someone in this book - but definitely the first two. I didn't care for anybody in this book.

An Unusual, Intricate--But FUN--Paranormal
Casually Cursed - Kimberly Frost

“You’re the craziest sane person I know, to tie yourself to a woman who is on the most-wanted list of so many scary supernatural creatures. You should’ve gotten engaged to a nice lady lawyer with no magic at all.”

Casually Cursed is a lively paranormal romance that hits us with some serious Southern charm while piling on the action and sassy comebacks.

I had such a good time getting to know Tammy Jo, Bryn, Mercutio, and the rest of the crew in this novel. The dynamics between the characters were so interesting, trying to figure out who was on the level and who might have had their own agenda. It did take me a little bit of reading before I figured out the world author Kimberly Frost created for us, as it’s so well detailed and intricate. But once I had it down, I loved all the creatures and the way they were all woven into the storyline.

Class Differences in Paranormal Romance
Soul Kissed - Erin Kellison
Troll-y Yours - Sheri Fredricks
Heart Change - Robin D. Owens
Wolf Who Rules - Wen Spencer
Lothaire (Immortals After Dark, #12) - Kresley Cole
Justin - Allyson James, Jennifer Ashley
No Words Alone - Autumn Dawn
Big Bad Beast - Shelly Laurenston
Born - Jenna McCormick
Would-Be Witch - Kimberly Frost

I actually perfer my Romance with more internal than external conflict. When the conflict stems from who the characters are rather than some outside force, it means they have to resolve the conflict. I get way more couple time this way.

Social class difference between the couple sets up an especially dynamic and interesting internal conflict. World views clash and shift.  Good stuff.

In Paranormal, Science Fiction and Fantasy Romance Class difference can be a great plot point as the whole world has been created.

Here are some wonderful Paranormal Romances that deal with social class difference between the leads.

But when her locket—an heirloom that happens to hold Edie’s soul—is stolen in the midst of a town-wide crime spree, it’s time for Tammy to find her inner witch.

After a few bad experiences with her magic, Tammy turns to the only one who can help: the very rich and highly magical Bryn Lyons. He might have all the answers, but the locket isn’t the only thing passed down in Tammy’s family. She also inherited a warning…to stay away from anyone named Lyons

Review- Would Be Witch
Would-Be Witch - Kimberly Frost

I read Olga Godim's review of this book a couple days ago and realized it was in my read pile.

There was little to lift this book out of the pile of paranormal mystery/romance pile. Tammy Jo, our rather power challenged heroine, lives in a small Texas town with her mom and aunt  who are both (in)conveniently absent under mysterious circumstances. She also has a family ghost living in her pendant and an ex-husband who is a deputy and a nonbeliever in magic but he is her first love and their relationship is the most annoying thing in the whole book.

Good grief, he sent her to a psychiatrist for "believing" in magic and witchcraft and she still falls into bed with him at the drop of his gunbelt. He leaps into the fray every chance he can to save her because in his mind she's still his wife and maybe just a tad craycray with all that magic talk. Grrrrrr...

If we have absent family, an ex who doesn't understand her, then we also need the Handsome, Rich, Warlock who not only knows there is magic but is Hot For Her. There is also the animal sidekick, in this case an exotic cat.

Haven't we all been here before? Of course we have, many, many times.

Tammy Jo loses her family, her job, her pendant, and it looks like she might also lose her life if she can't summon some magic to find her pendant, chase off some werewolves, and undo a spell.

The only time(s) I thought about stopping were when Travis, the ex, swaggered onto the page. He stood out for being an obnoxious, sexist small town old boy even if he is in his twenties.

When I finished I decided not to read any more of the series, there wasn't anything that promised the next book would more interesting but I had bought not only book 1 but book 2 from Ebay. Of course book 2 had already arrived and I figured, why not?

It gets its own review.

Bottom line:  Nothing to hate but nothing that makes it a memorable read either.

Bland urban fantasy
Would-Be Witch - Kimberly Frost

Meh. Not too bad, not too good, isn’t really worth the time, although there were some charming moments. The heroine of this urban fantasy novel Tammy is a witch without much power or training. She is hurtling from one adventure to another without a break. A bunch of vicious werewolves want to kill her. Two gorgeous guys want to sleep with her. Her heirloom medallion with a ghost of her grand-grand-grand-aunt is stolen, and she got fired into the bargain. Her life is definitely interesting.

If the writer could do justice to Tammy’s predicaments, the novel would’ve been irresistible. As it is, it was merely amusing.

There is also a strange conundrum: the first sentence of the novel is in the present tense, while the rest of the book is written in the usual past tense. I wonder why. Was it supposed to make some arcane sense? It doesn’t. It reads like a jarring mistake.
