BIRDS OF PREY by Crissy Smith
Birds of Prey (Shifter Chronicles Book 1) - Crissy Smith

Aubrey works security for her Cast. Her uncle, head of the Cast, has been murdered. The Coalition has been called in to investigate. The head of the Bird shifters investigators is Cody, Aubrey's former lover. He tells to butt out, but she does not listen. She finds the perp but ends up in trouble. Will Cody be able to rescue her?

I liked this couple. They are strong separately and together. They butt heads a lot but learn to work together. The world building is good. It sets up the series well. The story is weak as there are more questions than answers. How did the murderer get as far as he did? Why was no alarm raised from where he came? How did he get away with it? Why? There were a few lines about his motive and opportunity, but they felt throwaway at best. I do look forward to reading more of the series.

Abel's Omega (Mercy Hills Pack #2) by Ann-Katrin Byrde Review
Abel's Omega(Gay Paranomal MM Mpreg Romance) (Mercy Hills Pack Book 2) - Ann-Katrin Byrde

Bax is desperate.

Recently widowed, he takes his pups and flees his pack to avoid a new mate who wants him—but not his babies. At Mercy Hills, he finds the help he’d hoped for, but also a man who both attracts and unnerves him. He doesn’t want another alpha mate, or even any mate, though he knows that an omega has to have one. But Abel is unlike any other alpha he’s ever met, and the hope that had been crushed out of him begins to grow again in the warmth of Abel’s kindness and strength.

Bax is a dream come true for Abel—smart, loyal, strong, and loving. Everything Abel’s ever looked for in a mate. Except the independent omega has no reason to trust an alpha and Abel’s going to have to work his way through layers of hurt if he wants to convince Bax he’s safe opening his heart.

But to keep him, he’ll have to fight for him.

Review

While I long for an omegaverse romance where omega's have equity and the conflicts are based around character and relationships, this was a really well written world of shifters and omegas.

Bax is a wonderful father and hero of his own life. Able is lovely and his attention to who Bax as well as Bax's childern is awesome.

The plot drags for me as a romance because it takes a while for this element of the story to start and when it does the outside conflicts drive the plot a bit too much for me.

I love forward to reading more by this writer.

1. The Exile (Book of the Fae)  by C. T. Adams

Brianna Hai runs an occult shop that sells useless trinkets to tourists--and real magic supplies to witches and warlocks. The magical painting that hangs in Brianna's apartment is the last portal between the fae and human worlds.

A shocking magical assault on her home reveals to Brianna that her father, High King Liu of the Fae, is under attack. With the help of her gargoyle, Pug, her friend David, and Angelo, a police detective who doesn't believe in magic, Brianna recovers what was stolen from her and becomes an unwilling potential heir to the throne.

2.  Prudence (The Custard Protocol) by Gail Carriger

When Prudence Alessandra Maccon Akeldama ("Rue" to her friends) is bequeathed an unexpected dirigible, she does what any sensible female under similar circumstances would do -- she christens it the Spotted Custard and floats off to India.

Soon, she stumbles upon a plot involving local dissidents, a kidnapped brigadier's wife, and some awfully familiar Scottish werewolves. Faced with a dire crisis (and an embarrassing lack of bloomers), Rue must rely on her good breeding -- and her metanatural abilities -- to get to the bottom of it all...

3. Halfway Dead (Halfway Witchy Book 1) by Terry Maggert

Carlie McEwan loves many things.

She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, NY—a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is twenty-five pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her Grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest—and only—real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it.

When a blonde stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years. Come find me.
Danger, like the shadowed pools of the forest, can run deep. The danger is real, but Carlie’s magic is born of a pure spirit. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she’ll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.

4. There's Something About Werewolves (Seven Brides for Seven Shifters) by Thalia Eames

Lennox Averdeen’s top three worst fears:

1. Anything remotely canine.

2. Finding out she has a secret baby.

3. Running into Garrett Anderson. Former best friend. Heartbreaker.

She pulls a trifecta when she realizes the stray canine and the tween kid hanging around her house are not only one and the same, he’s Garrett’s wolf shifter son.

When Garrett tracks down his runaway son and sees Lennox again, the widowed father’s heart begins to struggle against his self-imposed chains. Plus, just coming into town pits him against the local Alpha, and everything he hates about pack life. The death, the heartache.

Despite her fears, Lennox becomes the boy’s mother in all but DNA. But Garrett? He can hula-hoop with the nine rings of hell. Except the heat of attraction has never died, and there’s only one way to slake their sexual thirst. Make a smoking-hot deal, agree to part as friends…and try to ignore the sound of Fate howling with laughter.

5. The Last True Vampire (Last True Vampire) by Kate Baxter

SOUL SURVIVOR
He is the last of his race. The one true king of the vampires. Michael Aristov roams the nightclubs of L.A. after dark, haunted by his past and driven by his hunger. The last of the Ancient Ones, he alone has survived the destruction of his race at the hands of the slayers. Now he is forced to hunt and feed like a common vampire, a creature of lust. Nothing in this world can fulfill his needs…until he meets a woman who's everything he's ever wanted. And more.

SWEET SALVATION
Her name is Claire Thompson. Her blood is so sweet, so intoxicating--the smell alone draws Michael to her like a moth to the flame. Sly, sexy, and seductive, Claire seems to be the only mortal who can satisfy his craving and seal his fate…forever. Can she be trusted? From their very first kiss, the last true vampire sweeps Claire into a world in which darkness rules desire--and where falling in love is the greatest danger of all

6. The Terrans (First Salik War) by Jean Johnson

Born into a political family and gifted with psychic abilities, Jacaranda MacKenzie has served as a border-watcher and even spent time as a representative on the United Planets Council. Now she just wants to spend her days in peace and quiet as a translator—but the universe has other plans…

Humans have long known that they would encounter more alien species, and while those with precognitive abilities agree a terrible war is coming, they do not agree on who will save humanity—a psychic soldier or a politician.

But Jackie is both.

After she is pressured into rejoining the Space Force to forestall the impending calamity, Jackie makes an unsettling discovery. Their new enemy, the Salik, seem to be rather familiar with fighting Humans—as if their war against humanity had already begun…

7. To Mate an Assassin (The Lost Alphars Series) by Ceri Grenelle

Cymbeline Kendall’s life is quiet, solitary—until a letter appears in her P.O. box. Then she becomes an Incendiary, a human chosen at birth to be trained to strike like lightning to take out the most dangerous of the Werekind, then fade back into the shadows.

She is a weapon only to be used by the leader of North American shifters. But when she learns the Alphar was unseated three years ago, she sets out to find who’s been pulling her trigger.

Kerrick Masterson has borne the burden of leadership for only a short time, yet he already feels the Alphar power tempting his soul toward the insanity that destroyed his predecessor. He has no time for the woman who breaks into his compound claiming to be his Incendiary, but his beast insists he make the time—for his mate.

In one searing, soul-consuming breath, everything Cymbeline was taught to believe is ripped away. Yet the mystery of who’s been sending her orders remains…and finding the answer could lead to all-out war.

8. The Veil (Devil's Isle) by Chloe Neill

Seven years ago, the Veil that separates humanity from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil's Isle.

Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she’s a Sensitive, a human endowed with magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined to Devil’s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused.

Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a human under attack—in full view of the French Quarter—Liam decides to bring her to Devil’s Isle and the teacher she needs, even though getting her out of his way isn’t the same as keeping her out of his head.

As more and more Sensitives fall prey to their magic, and unleash their hunger on the city, Claire and Liam must work together to save New Orleans, or else the city will burn…

9. Flight from Death (Fly by Night) by Yasmine Galenorn

’m Shimmer, a blue dragon shifter. Thanks to a mistake, I was exiled from the Dragon Reaches and sentenced to work for Alex Radcliffe, a vampire who owns the Fly by Night Magical Investigations Agency. Now, not only do I have to adapt to Earthside culture, but every time I turn around, somebody’s trying to kill us. And worse, Alex is as gorgeous as he is exasperating. But you know what they say: All’s fair in love and bounty hunting…

When an old friend of Alex contacts him about a haunting at the High Tide Bed & Breakfast in Port Townsend, Washington, we think we’re on a simple ghost hunt. But our investigation quickly transforms into a deadly fight as we uncover an eighty-year-old murder, a cursed house, and a dark force trapping the spirits within. To stop impending disaster we must break the curse and lay the angry spirits to rest.

10. Trailer Park Fae (Gallow and Ragged) by Lilith Saintcrow

Jeremiah Gallow is just another construction worker, and that's the way he likes it. He's left his past behind, but some things cannot be erased. Like the tattoos on his arms that transform into a weapon, or that he was once closer to the Queen of Summer than any half-human should be. But now Gallow is dragged back into the world of enchantment, danger, and fickle fae by a woman who looks uncannily like his dead wife. Her name is Robin, and her secrets are more than enough to get them both killed

A Murder of Crows
The Unleashing - Shelly Laurenston

This was a group read for the Dangerous Hero Addict Support Group, and I'm glad it got voted for. It gave me that push to read Shelly Laurenston. I've heard from many that she's a good author, and I actually have most of her Dragon books written under G.A. Aiken, but I just hadn't gotten around to reading her books written under this name.

One thing that one needs to understand about this book is that it's very heroine and women-bonding centered. Kera is a woman who needed strong bonds with women who had her back and who accepted her no matter what, and she found that with the Crows. At the same time, it's a romance, but the romance doesn't really develop until maybe 70 or so pages into the novel. Having said that, I found this very enjoyable. It's really funny and every character is a real 'character'. There's even a dog that manages to steal some scenes.

I liked Vig, a lot. He's a dangerous hero, but in a cuddly kind of way (when he's not in battle mode and ripping people's arms off.) He's very supportive to Kera, and I'd call him the perfect boyfriend. I would say the cover is highly misleading. I tried not to be embarrassed about it when I'd have it at work and my coworkers saw it. Vig has a big beard and lots of hair. He's not a clean-shaven male model type. I guess the publishers didn't think people would go for a cover with Vig as he looks in the book. It seems to me that having big beards is very much in vogue, so I'd find that intriguing if the cover actually reflected that (not that like facial hair, because I don't). I like that Vig was comfortable with himself and thus with Kera as she was. I think that's so crucial in a relationship that people accept you as you are. They want the best for you, but they aren't constantly trying to change you. The romance worked for me because it was built on mutual like and respect, as well as passion and strong emotion.

This book is pretty violent, with descriptive action scenes. It wasn't over the top, and after reading Matt Reilly this past month, it seemed kind of mild, to be honest. The story is about a violent subculture of fighters for the Norse gods who go all out. I wasn't surprised for it to be violent with that expectation. The story itself is intriguing and makes me want to keep reading this series.

So I really liked this one. I liked Kera a lot. She was a real person and I appreciated her strengths and weaknesses. She was very caring, but tough as well. I loved the multicultural feel to this book. There are people of just about every race and ethnicity. And considering this is based on Norse mythology, it was cool that Laurenston was able to achieve this. I also loved how the Crows are all strong women but not all cut from the same mode. I love when the diversity of strong woman is presented instead of making it seem like all woman have to be the same to be strong and confident.

There was a lot to appreciate about this book. Four well earned stars.

Our Review

This is a brand new author with a new series .This is also a brand new author for me and she just wowed me thinking Omg this is such a terrific read. This book was totally amazing.I was just blown away by how good it really was.By far this is the best young adult series I have read this year.I would also like to give props to the author for creating three truly fascinating and maddening addictive stories Forsaken,Awaken and Chosen. What impressed me even more is that Kristen Day is a self published author who brought forth three amazing winners right off the bat!

This story had such a truly amazing cast of characters.I liked them all, Well with a few exceptions I wanted to see those ones get what was there due !The roommates of Stasia's were truly a fascinating group of girls. They brought many laughs and quite a few chuckles to the pages as I was reading. One of the things that impressed me was that the girls were always snacking a eating especially desserts like cup cakes. With so many body conscious teens it was nice to see that this group of girls didn't have any weight issues they were all comfortable in there own skins.Well, they had to be one of Stasia's roommates liked to cook and bake and she did a lot of both.No dorm mates staving here ! LOL

My favorite character was Finn Morrison.I fell in love with is character after reading just a few pages. That was one Hottie !Finn was a amazing guy and even more of an amazing boyfriend to Stasia he was a kind and caring and always put Stasia first and was there for her when ever she needed a shoulder to cry on or just someone to talk to.Finn definitely had a helping hand in shaping and guiding  Stasia into the women she would become one day soon.Finn was tall dark and dangerously handsome a boy from the underworld the Demon world. The aura always surrounding Finn was dark but, he was just the nicest guy to his friends but, deadly foe to his enemies and those of Stasia's.Wish I had a guy like that sigh....

Stasia would have to be my second favorite. What a truly amazing girl to deal with the abandonment of her parents .Always  knowing you were different and trying to be normal just to fit in.Always working at it making it an exhausting process. She was adopted into a rich family who never really tried to get to know the real Stasia just thinking she was crazy. But, one shrink determined what was wrong with her and placed her in a school for gifted children like herself learning that she was different not insane but, born from a Goddess. All her oddness visions blackouts all made sense finally she was coming into the powers that her parents had passed on to her not knowing who or where she came from. Can you imagine learning your mother was a mystical creature all and mighty powerful Goddess ?

Love the ease that Stasia had with her roommates it was refreshing no fighting or petty jealousies between the roommates they all got along were funny engaging and had the true making of a long and lasting friendships for all of them. Each would give there life for one another without even giving it a second thought. All of Stasia friends had there own mystical powers and all were born of the Tyde clan giving them a different talent to heal, command water, command the sand.None of them should ever be underestimate they were all powerful in there own right. The slow and budding romance between Finn and Stasia was truly endearing.Finn being a modern man but, being old fashion enough to actually court his girl like the old days. So romantic...

This novel was totally engrossing and quite the page turner, Read this book in one sitting by staying up all night without ever going to bed just to finish it.It was truly a magical read just couldn't put the book down. The story had so much excitement so many twists and turns .You learn someone or somebody's were plotting to kill you without having a clue why ?

The story was about learning about your one true self. Where you came from.Who you are destined to be.Forging lasting friendships that would last ones lifetime. Finally finding a place that you belonged and felt that you fit somewhere for the first time ever. Last but not least being in a relationship with the one who could truly own your heart helping your heal from past hurts. All of the gals are so jealous they all want a boyfriend like Finn.Including me ! LOL

This is a must read for all. Even if you don't read young adult books this book and the others in its series are a must in your To Read Pile that keeps growing for all of us.I cannot say enough good things about this book it was so much fun and such and engaging read.It just blew me away how much I enjoyed it! .Kristen definitely has a new fan in me ! So excited that this series with be continuing not ending....

Our Review

Wow ! Another keeper for sure. This continuing story just picked up where the last story left off.I never realized I was reading a new book! How fantastic is that.Another page turner that kept me up all night again but, I am not complaining this book was well worth it !

The danger became even more real for Stasia strangers are in town are now making her life a living hell. What to do ?After learning of her true destiny that she is the intended Leader of the Tydes. She must prepare herself for a quest to gain entrance to the underworld where she will gain her immortality. It is a dangerous quest she needs to learn to control all the powers she been gifted with to use in the up and coming fight. With the help of Finn and her friends she will learn all that she is capable of.Stasia is struggling with all of this its a lot to take on so soon. All these powers are coming so fast she has not been able to control them or learn even to use them to her advantage. She having reveries that she is not understanding. She is able to travel to the past and to the future and present just by dreaming.Learning some very discerning stuff as to what is to become or her...

Love all of character's.They were very brave, funny and characters for sure. We are introduced to even more characters as Stasia roommates are alsolearning to craft there own powers along with engaging in the dating scene themselves.

Got to say that Carmen was my favorite character this time around. That girl had such a demanding presence about her. She was one tough cookie. She made me laugh more then once with heraltercations with Ricker. The couple had a love hate relationship.Carmen and Ricker had a past making there situation even morecomplicated. But, all the while all the tense fighting and teasing was going on you could tell Ricker truly cared about Carmen. If you ask me he really wore is heart on his sleeve.

Then we have Liam and Willow taking there stab at romance or trying to.There developing romance was slow they seemed to be testing the waters both of them.Well maybe more so Liam he was so painfully shy and Willow a little more bolder I think well, maybe in her mind. But, I really think they will make a really cute couple. One thing that this author did is create all her male love interests to carry on as gentlemen.I just love that.

I have to say that I just loved following Anastasia budding romance with Finn.He just kept getting and better in my eyes. Both are now taking there relationship toward the next level. Finn is an important part of Stasia future as well as her past he knows so much about her that even Stasia doesn't know.

I have to say that I kept getting more and more excited as Stasia learned one ability after another. She was so surprised at herself at the abilities she had mastered and learned to control and command. In a sense they really scared her a bit. She grew even more powerful than even her mother ever was and she held extreme power so you can only imagine the things Stasia was capable of a even surprising Finn.

Not only does Stasia have a destiny to follow so does Finn.He will need to fight is own brother to the death to take his next chosen place as the leader of there clan. Its a fight to the death for both. I can only imagine how that weighed on Finns thoughts and what Finn must have been going through not only worrying about his own path but Stasia's. I had one pet peeve or didn't like about Finn at times it felt as he kept a lot of information to himself about his own clan and destiny and Stasia's at times it seemed like he was trying to hide things. But, then on the other hand maybe he was trying to protect Stasia by not telling. What pressure he must have be under to know what he had to accomplish himself and still protect his love at the same time.

Even more intrigue is happening and even more twists and turns and now even a few road blocks. At this point Stasia and Finns relationship is be put to the test and Anastasia love is being tested. This couple will have to have faith in each other for there love to survive.Bombshells are dropped and are having you wonder if there relationship was nothing but a joke.

I have to say that Stasia's roommates all stepped up to the plate a rallied with Stasia supporting her in her quest to come.Helping anyway they can.You will be amazed to learn the sacrifices her pals were willing to make. They impressed me greatly.

Such a moving story with so many ups and downs so much intrigue and howmuch we were able to learn about all the characters pasts and what was expected of them for the future.Amazing relationships built on love and friendship being put to the test.

This is a book to be read again and again and will remain in my keeper pile .A recommended read to all ages. A fascinating story not to be missed.

The essence of who we are lies not in what we have, but in what we are willing to give up.  Because in the end, Time and Tide wait for no one.

After sacrificing all that she had, the evil princess of the Underworld is still successful in her bid to tear Finn from Stasia’s life.  In the midst of her search to reclaim him, Stasia is summoned to the island nation of Cyprus to take part in an age-old ritual; unveiling the missing pieces of her ancestry and re-igniting an ancient war.  As she struggles to both save Finn’s soul and free Carmen’s mind, Stasia’s bravery and determination will be pushed to its breaking point.  A dark storm is forming on the horizon, and the forces who are vying to destroy her may be much closer than she thinks.  Destiny weaves a sticky web of evil, betrayal, and revenge that can only be undone by the purity of love and the soul’s unyielding will to survive.  In the last installment of the Daughters of the Sea trilogy, the past will collide with the present as Stasia’s future hangs in the balance.  The prophecy that paved the way for her new life may indeed be the very thing that strips her of the ones she loves the most.

Our Review

This best series I have read so far this year !I have to stay that I haven't been this excited about a series since reading Claudy Conn's Shadow series.Once I started reading I was already feeling a loss thinking that this is the conclusion to this on going series. I am so sad...

Another fabulous read! Another sleepless night well worth it !I have to say how impressed I am with this author and her writing .Her books never included a dull moment and each book just kept getting better and better and even more intriguing.

Another amazing read with a great cast of characters. We are introduced to Anastasia's mother if only in ghostly form. And we learn even a bigger secret about her father.

Anastasia and Finn at this point have gone there separate ways. They have to conquer there own destines by themselves .They both are experiencing heart break .Its kind of sad neither could be there to support the other for the final chosen quests.

Stasia powers are almost to her full capacity at this point she just is learning to adjust to them more like fine tuning them.Once she completes are test and becomes immortal she will be a force to be reckoned with !At this point I am really feeling Stasia pain so much pressure put on one so young.

Stasia parents left her with some really big shoes to fill. Not only does she need to succeed at her quest in the underworld she needs to gain access to it.She needs the approval of a bitch of a Goddess to gain entrance. Then she needs to survive the quest with some heirlooms her mother has passed on to her and a moonstone she found at a wreck when playing in the ocean with Finn. She will need to find a way to used these items in her quest.Once free she will need to battle against her mothers sister (clan sister) to prove she is the strongest of them to be the new and rightful leader of the Tyde's not only that again the approval of all there clan.

I was impressed with the sacrifices that Finn and Anastasia were willing to make for one another just to be together. It almost broke my heart. There whole courtship was a very intriguing one and one that never felt rushed.Every decision each made about the other had much thought behind it.It felt like that they were striving for a Happily ever after so took the romance slowly.

Poor Carmen she went with Stasia to the underworld and came home a prisoner in her own body something a someone got into her mind and was controlling her thoughts making her insane. They were killing her really.Ricker has been with her non stop lending his love and support and knowledge to free his love of this demon or what ever has possessed her. What a rock he was he impressed me greatly any other guy would have taken a hike. How there relationship has blossomed over time.So sweet..

So much has happen .So many secrets have come to light taking us down new avenues. The pain and loss are becoming bearable now.So much intrigue and new twists and turns coming to light we are on the seat of our pants and waiting for answers. We are hoping they will be able to heal Carmen and make her whole once again.

We see Finn and Stasia love become even more greater. Will they take that finally step to be together for all eternity ?But can you trust the others around you not to betray you ?Can Anastasia accomplish all her goals without losing her life?Have you gained all that you ever wanted a family, fantastic friend's a kind a loving boyfriend that was meant to be your soul mate just to lose it all ?

Wow ! So many mixed emotions did I experience in this last novel.I experience happiness, sadness, and plenty of tears that is for sure but, also love a laughter. We see compassion given and respect gained leaving you in awe because you never saw that one coming.

Another thrilling and truly amazing read for me!Another story by Kristen not to be missed.I am seeing a bright future for this young writer and can't wait to see what other amazing stories she will have for us in the future.

Oh wait I said I was sad to see this series come to an end that I would feel a great loss and will miss an amazing cast of character right ? Well Kristen has surprised me greatly she has another yet to this series .Hearken (Daughters of the Sea #4) coming soon yeah !!!!

The sea’s crashing waves felt like a soft blanket on a cool night, surrounding my heart and energizing my muscles.  I found the moonstone still in my hand and shoved it into my jeans pocket before diving underwater; swimming as fast as I could.  I propelled myself through the water with incredible force and speed, surprising even myself.  As the rain fell on the surface, a frenzy of energy swirled around me.  Schools of fish suddenly came alive, darting back in forth with the cadence of the rain above.  It was as if the sea was feeding off of the turbulent energy from above.  I pulled from it and let it take over, filling every fiber of my being with its strength.

As the bottom changed from sandy to rocky, I knew I was close.  Allowing my instinct to guide me, I darted toward shore.  The grass covering the boulders below danced in the chaotic rhythm of the waves and I could feel the excitement every living being fell victim to at the falling rain.  It was if the sea was celebrati Celebrating a part of itself returning after a long journey.

As I made my way on shore, I realized I had lost my shoes at some point during my swim. I clamored over the rocky shoreline that swept the area.  The pouring rain made it impossible to see and even more impossible to walk.  It hadn’t been raining in my vision, but what about when the rain let up?  What about tomorrow?  The next day?  I strained to remember if there was any trace of rain in my vision, but I couldn’t remember.  The more time that went by, the hazier the memory of my visions became.

My feet slipped on the slippery rocks of the beach and I tumbled sideways, landing hard on my side and scraping my leg.  I pushed myself back up and continued, only to slip again.  This time a pair of arms caught me mid-fall, securing me and softening the landing as we both tumbled onto the rocks.  I felt the pain of several more bruises as my legs slammed into a couple sharp ones.

“Nice night for a swim,” Finn’s sarcastic voice tickled my ear, momentarily hypnotizing me.

“Let me go, I have to find them!” I yelled back at him, attempting to stand back up.  Unfortunately, he easily overpowered my efforts.

“You’re not finding anybody in this weather.”

“I have to try!” I struggled against his strong arms to no avail.

            “Stasia, calm down.”

“I’ll calm down when I figure out why the hell I keep having visions that don’t make sense!” I yelled at him, tears burning behind my eyes. “I have to watch a bunch of people have their souls ripped out of their bodies with no clue as to who they are, where they are, or most importantly when they are!”

“Just because you have a vision about something doesn’t mean you are supposed to hunt to the ends of the earth to find it and prevent it,” he said calmly. “Some things are meant to happen.  Fate and destiny are stronger than any vision, any essence, or any ability.”

“Then why do I have them?  Why can’t I have a vision about something good?  Why do I have to watch people die!?”
            “It just takes time-“
“I don’t have time!” I yelled back at him. “All of this!  You’ve had time to figure all of this out!  I’ve had months, Finn!  Months! And each day I’m closer to my eighteenth birthday.  Each day I’m closer to confronting Keto.  Each day I’m closer to-“
“…fulfilling your destiny.” Finn interrupted. “Why can’t you see how special you are?  If your mother didn’t believe you could do this, she wouldn’t have Chosen you.”
“Well being Chosen isn’t as great as it’s cracked up to be, if you ask me.”
“Welcome to my life,” Finn muttered and chuckled in spite of himself. “Being Chosen isn’t supposed to be fun or easy.  It’s hard - it’s very hard…which is why it’s not given out freely.  Only those who can handle it are given the responsibilities and pressures that come along with it.”
“I feel like my abilities work against me half the time.  They distract me or backfire on me!  How can I concentrate on what I’m supposed to do when I’m having visions constantly about people dying and horrible things happening?  How can I concentrate on what I’m supposed to do, when I know Nadia is out there, waiting for me to stumble so she can kick me when I’m down?”
“I know you don’t want to hear this, but you’ll figure it out.  Once you begin to control and harness your abilities, it will all begin to fall into place,” Finn explained. “You have to trust me on that.  When we return to Lorelei, Mom will make sure your only priority is to practice your abilities. I have a feeling the new Maven will not disagree.”
I gave up my fight and sagged against him, leaning my head back on his shoulder.  I let his darkness wrap around me and soothe my heart.  “I don’t know what I’d do without you,” I murmured.
“You’d probably have a broken leg,” he joked. “These rocks are no joke.  Let’s get you someplace dry.”
He helped me up and we delicately made our way across the rocky beach, toward a rock that was shaped like a giant letter ‘n’ stepping into the ocean; one leg on the beach, while the other was underwater.  Beneath its arch the waves were slowly crawling toward the other leg, so that the sand beneath was wet, but we were still shielded from the rain.  I sat down on the wet sand and stretched my legs out, allowing the water to slosh over them again and again.
“We could be in one of those Giorgio for Men cologne commercials right now, and not even know it.”
“I was in a commercial like that once,” Finn contemplated.
            “You were!?”
            “No,” he smirked.
“I hate you,” I splashed water up at him.
“Aw, you don’t mean that,” he mewed, moving closer to me.  I inched away from him and crossed my arms.
            “Oh yes I do.”
“I bet I can change your mind.”
“I doubt it,” I retorted, instantly regretting it when I saw the knowing look in his eye.
“Challenge accepted.” He grinned at me like a panther about to go in for the kill, and I was fully aware I was the kill.  What I wasn’t aware of was the fact that it had started to storm.  Lightning struck nearby, sending a shock-wave across the beach that lit up the night with its flash.  I shrieked out and instinctively moved towards Finn, who pulled me close.
“I knew I could change your mind,” he chuckled.  I didn’t miss the smug smile on his face. “You didn’t know I could control lightning, did you?”
“I hope the next one hits you.” I rolled my eyes at his phony claim, inwardly relishing the feel of his arms and the comfort of his body beside mine.  As if on cue, another bolt of lightning shot across the sky and sent the resulting thunder over the water and onto the beach; rattling
my insides with its tenor.
“Careful Pasha, you never know what you might be capable of.” He grinned, leaning towards me and nuzzling my neck. “Burnt-to-a-crisp-Finn was not on the menu for tonight.”
“I’m pretty sure I can’t control anything that powerful,” I laughed his comment off and shivered at the feel of his breath on my neck.
“I beg to differ,” he whispered in my ear.

About The Author:

I am a southern belle at heart with a crazy streak that desperately tries to escape at every opportunity. I love all things nostalgic, rustic, and quirky. I've been told I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but I prefer to think of them as kaleidoscope glasses - swirling and morphing reality into something I can digest (who hasn't pretended those pasty lima beans were really kiwi strawberry jelly beans?).

I am the author of the DAUGHTERS OF THE SEA trilogy, which includes FORSAKEN, AWAKEN, and CHOSEN (Winter 2012). I love all books, but really enjoy writing young adult, paranormal romances. I've loved to write for as long as I can remember. My first published work was my poem RED in second grade (you guessed it - it was a poem about the color red - life altering, I know) that won me 5 gold stars and a spot in my elementary school's poetry book. That's when my addiction to the written word officially began. I was the only kid in fifth grade that actually enjoyed diagramming sentences. Go ahead and laugh – it’s okay.

When I'm not writing I'm making jewelry, painting, drinking sweet tea, watching the discovery channel, or going on random adventures in the mountains of North Carolina with my amazing husband. I graduated from Appalachian State University and dream of becoming a full time novelist.
