Forge of the Mindslayers, Blade of the Flame #2 by Tim Waggoner
Forge of the Mind Slayers - Tim Waggoner

Some months after the events of 'Thieves of Blood' the remaining party members led by Diran take are on an aggressive campaign against evil. Their travels have led them across the Principalities into an obscure corner where two small baronies locked in a trade stalemate, an old curse prevents cooperation.

In the mountains they cross paths with the lich Lathifa in her lair, and she is fascinated by the dragonwand the artificer Tressler carries. It was apparently fashioned from a powerful and lost magical artifact. The lich sends her barghest servant after the party to get the wand at any cost. In those same mountains an orc rival of Ghaji is working for a mad assassin from Diran's past and a Kalashtar. The terrible trio are working to rebuild an abandoned experimental Cannith forge.

There are a lot of coincidences going on, but a lot of it can be explained as the manipulations of Vol, who, admittedly, has had 3,000 years or so to line things up. In the shadow of her plans the struggle for the psi-forged facility pales. Waggoner continues to dig deep into the character's pasts with well-timed flashbacks and broadens the character's relationships with each other. The villains are hardly bungling, but there was something funny about how these five scheming villains could hardly stop plotting and backstabbing and rubbing their hands together to get REVENGE and be the BEST at being EVIL!

This was really enjoyable - I had to dive right in to the next one.

New Release Review! A Spark of Light (Chronicles of Light #5) Chris Stoneheart!

Hello Readers! Today, I am joining Kaitlin as she heads to China with her daughter and ends up meeting the Monkey King and then returns home to deal with having to send her daughter off to college while keeping the supernatural world from harming her daughter. Enjoy and don't forget to add A Spark of Light by Chris Stoneheart to your shelves!

Book five of The Chronicles of the Light...

Kaitlin will get her chance to seek revenge on Gavin, and she desperately hopes to make an example of him so the other power players in the supernatural community will think twice before they come after Kaitlin or her family again. The Master Vampire gives her from sundown to sunup to torture his second in command, and maybe it isn't in her nature, but she'll have to figure something out.

Lauren is heading to New England for college, and Kaitlin needs to be sure she's done all she can to prepare her daughter. She wants her old teacher to train Lauren, but things aren't as they should be when mother and daughter arrive.

In China, the Lion Dance and Dragon Dance are ubiquitous, and the Monkey King frequently plays a part in both. Kaitlin is friends with the Lion King and Dragon King, and despite the fact this has nothing to do with the legendary Chinese lion or dragon, the implications are far-reaching once she's back in China.

After getting her revenge on Gavin, Kaitlin steps away from the Chattanooga supernaturals and heads to China with her daughter, Lauren. While Lauren is studying with her old teacher, Kaitlin takes on a quest to right something that is wrong and ends up on a journey of knowledge with a little help but the Monkey King. Once Kaitlin and Lauren return home, it is time to see Lauren off to college and Kaitlin must ensure that Lauren is safe from Kaitlin’s enemies.

This ‘Chronicles of the Light’ story is a wonderfully fascinating & varied traveling experience as well as providing readers with some powerful knowledge that could be extremely helpful in Kaitlin’s future, of course there is the chance that this could bring her under further scrutiny as well. The plot is more steady paced that the others but very enlightening, intriguing and even provides quite a few chuckles alongside all the excitement of the Monkey King joining Kaitlin on her quest.

Once the overseas part comes to end, there is no question that Kaitlin will see more action as the supernaturals in her life set out to see that Lauren will be safe while she is away at college. Some twists, turns and betrayals make the trip a bit more dangerous that Kaitlin was expecting and more of her abilities are revealed than she is comfortable with and readers can’t help but join right in with the heart pounding steps that Kaitlin must take to ensure that her daughter stays safe and out of enemies hands.

New Release Review! Dark Light (Chronicles of Light #4) Chris Stoneheart!

TGIF, Readers! I am finishing up this weeks adventures with a visit to Chattanooga and the Supernaturals that live there where Kaitlin finds herself feeling as if she is a game piece in a sadistic chess tournament! Enjoy and don't forget to add Dark Light by Chris Stoneheart to your shelves!

Book four of The Chronicles of the Light…

Kaitlin negotiated for what she hopes will be two magnificent hours with Xaephan. Unfortunately, the Lord of Lust’s agreements aren’t always as they seem, and the consequences of their evening are long lasting.

She follows through on her deal with Ryan and heads to Africa to help guard gazelles for a week. Ryan trains her, but no one anticipates the powerful, ancient Strigorii vampires who have her in their sights. Since she broke up with Abbott, gaining control of her will be like hanging a sign saying they’re more powerful than The Abbott without having to actually fight him.

Throw in complications with Nathan and a few battles with her old enemy Aquila, and Kaitlin doesn’t know whether she’s coming or going. She wants peace and quiet with her daughter, but is it possible? Is she too embroiled in supernatural politics to live a normal life? Kaitlin feels as if she’s become a game piece in a sadistic chess tournament, and she wants off the board.

With complications arising in her relationship with Nathan, guarding gazelles in Africa with Ryan, Strigorii vampires who have her in their sights, and a few battles with her old enemy, Aquilla and Kaitlin doesn’t know whether she’s coming or going. She feels like she’s become a game piece in a sadistic chess tournament and all she wants is off the board to live in peace and quiet with her daughter.

Kaitlin is back in this explosive and energetic continuation of the ‘Chronicles of Light’ series. This time the story has our feisty heroine negotiating with the Lord of Lust, traveling to Africa, guarding gazelles and discovering that there is other supernatural groups that want a piece of her. This fast paced, non-stop action story is full of captivating emotional angst, thrilling, hold your breath suspense and stunning battles that rocks readers’ worlds while keeping them completely absorbed until the very last page.

The romance part of this story has a hit a few snags as her relationship with Nathan explodes into an ‘OMG what have I done now’ moment. And honestly this whole story explodes into sharp edged pieces as friends, lovers, allies and even enemies are torn apart and readers don’t want to miss one second of the world rockin’ excitement as Kaitlin tries to keep all the allies in Chattanooga from disintegrating into an unfixable mess.

New Release Review! Chasing the Light (Chronicles of Light # 3) Chris Stoneheart!

Good Morning Readers! It's May Day and I am celebrating by visiting Kaitlin in her 3rd book of the urban fantasy Chronicles of Light series by Chris Stoneheart! Enjoy and don't forget to add Chasing the Light to your shelves!

Chronicles of the Light, book three…

Kaitlin O'Malley is relieved to finally get some peace with her family. However, when The Dragon King finally locates the human who wields light-weapons similar to hers, Kaitlin is dragged into another fearsome clash of vampires, shapeshifters, and not-so-mythological gods.

Working alongside the King of Cats is a constant pull on her libido — life was easier when he was a distant feline with no interest in her. But after several new species show their true colors, Kaitlin struggles for survival. Between her old enemy Aquila, a certain demon and his alter-ego brother, and another skirmish with the Alpha Wolf, Kaitlin squeezes in a little playtime with a sexy biker.

Torn between the forces of light and darkness, can Kaitlin fight to keep her family alive while Chasing the Light?

Several new species have shown their true colors, the man who wields light weapons has been located, & Kaitlin is dragged into another fearsome clash of vampires, shifters and not-so- mythological gods. Torn between the forces of light and darkness, Kaitlin has to fight to keep her family alive.

Another thrilling exploit in the Chronicles of Light that has the heroine struggling to survive amongst the supernatural world. Kaitlin is a strong characters that stands out to readers as overcoming the odds and managing to keep her and her family safe while learning more about herself and the supernatural world and in this book readers find her character more intriguing than ever. Her life (and this story) is fast paced never ending excitement and unexpected surprises that keeps Kaitlin and readers on their toes.

Joining Kaitlin and her group of supernatural allies as she Chases the Light is one thrilling ride that readers can’t get enough of. Her love life is a bit different in that she puts her adopted daughter ahead of her personal life and indulges in some down & dirty intimacy without compromising her beliefs, herself or most importantly her family. Her characters’ lives large but honestly and has quite the not let anyone get the best of her attitude that ensures readers want to get to know her better. This fascinating world involves some heavy duty, alpha males, various types of supernaturals and lots action and excitement where the readers are constantly on pins and needles what will happen next. This stupendously exciting story has Kaitlin learning about more fascinating abilities, facing a few consequences and has her allies wonder if they should let her live her life or keep her under lock and key which adds a bit of intense anxious feelings to the story.

A Tale of Two Demon Slayers (Accidental Demon Slayer #3) by Angie Fox
A Tale of Two Demon Slayers (Biker Witches Mystery Book 3) - Angie Fox

Lizzie is going to Greece to have a holiday with her Gryphon boyfriend in his ancestral home - while Dimitri can finally look to a future with his family and clan now the curse has been lifted

But peace is quickly menaced by an ominous prediction of Lizzie’s death. Oh and Dimitri’ ex who raises some disturbing questions about where Lizzie actually fits in his world.

This is one of this books that surprises me. The first two books of this series have… not been my favourite series, been often quite simplistic and sidelining just about everything that made this book so fascinating - like the biker witches

And a fair bit of that continues - the biker witches are still just a vague background group who don’t serve a great deal of purpose except to be the world’s worst house guests just so Lizzie can feel super super worried.

But it does equally feed quite interestingly into Lizzie’s conflict over just how much Dimitri has done for her, sacrificed for her et al. Which is an interesting element of self-reflection especially from a character who has spent most of her story so far being understandably self-absorbed. I mean this isn’t a character flaw on Lizzie’s part because she’s obviously gone through a lot, being a little self-focused makes sense. I don’t begrudge her a second of this because that’s natural, nor do I think her resisting further revelations or her objecting to anything stopping her having a break, just a brief break. This is a reasonable, human reaction. And it’s equally reasonable for her to, when she has a bit of break, to reflect on that and think that maybe the people around her have done a lot for her. I kind of think that the Witches deserve more of this reflection and realisation than Dimitri. But the whole conflict and internal debate is really well done.

I think that the book kind of misses what Lizzie did for them - saving the witches and releasing Dmitri’s family from a curse that was killing his sisters and destroying his family and future. I mean this whole narrative kind of misses that every side character would actually be dead if it weren’t for Lizzie. The balance isn’t all one way- and I think that this is pushed at least in part because they wanted Lizzie to have break up angst with Dmitri. Which I don’t get the need for, we don’t need a relationship drama as well as everything else and I think the relationship was already super shaky because of how very very.

But I did like the interaction between Lizzie and Dmitri’s sisters - the instant connection, the support, Lizzie backing them without trying to overrule them. And I liked Amara. I’m skating round spoiler territory here - but I liked her developed story and the revelations that came with her especially since she began as such a “AAARGH EVIL LOVE RIVAL! RAWR!”

Really, Lizzie’s interactions with other women in this book were excellent - even when it looked like something stereotypical or dubious was raising it’s ugly head it was subverted. I also liked the crafty biplay of Dimitri and the Biker witches. While Lizzie is, frankly, being ultra snobby and generally thinking that her low class family is going to embarrass her in front of her super classy boyfriend, Dmitri himself is fully respectful of the witches skills and willing to let them have free reign. It’s a nice touch and a gentle subversion of Lizzie’s own, well, shame at her biker family.

I also really liked her instructor - quirky, not aggressive, forms a good rapport: there’s no unnecessary antagonism at all. On top of that we have an interesting plot with some nice forboding and hefty stakes and some really powerful hooks for future books
