The Penultimate Peril (A series of unfortunate events #12)
The Penultimate Peril - Michael Kupperman,Lemony Snicket,Brett Helquist

❝Certain people have said that the world is like a calm pond, and that anytime a person does even the smallest thing, it is as if a stone has dropped into the pond, spreading circles of ripples further and further out, until the entire world has been changed by one tiny action. ❞

Okay this is the best of the series yet. It's full of adventure for our beloved children, as:

- both new and old questions appear, and

- mysteries are solved, on a hotel everyone from the lives of the orphans makes an appearance.

The children pose as the staff, on a hotel where the meeting of the infamous V.F.D. organization will take place. They have limited time to figure out who can be trusted, as more and more familiar faces begin to check in the hotel...

I never thought I would say this but I'm beginning to like the dreadful count...Of course the next one was picked immediately and I both want and dread the moment I close the last page of the last book on the last chapter of the orphans' lives.

P.S = Remember that quote I marked in the review of the previous book?

❝The way sadness works is one of the strange riddles of the world. If you are stricken with a great sadness, you may feel as if you have been set aflame, not only because of the enormous pain, but also because your sadness may spread over your life, like smoke from an enormous fire.❞

I think it gives us a very great insight on the life of a certain villain...

.The Penultimate Peril Book Review.
The Penultimate Peril. by Lemony Snicket - Lemony Snicket

This review can also be found at Goodreads.

With one more book to go could be Baudelaires be getting closer to finding out any answers and bringing the villainous Count Olaf to justice?? In this journey the children are dropped off in front of the last VFD safe place. The Hotel Dénouement. Here they will be working for vfd as concierges to gain access to the hotel and the guests staying there. Of course, things are never as easy as they seem, as the hotel is swimming with villains and noble people alike, as well as some familiar faces.

At one point during the story it spilts from a single POV to each siblings as they undergo their separate tasks for guests whilst gaining any information they can about the sugar bowl and villains secret plans. One of the biggest problems the children face is that the hotel is run but two mangers. Twins Ernest and Frank, with one working for VFD and the other not.

"Are you who I think you are?"

This question follows the children throughout this book with neither of them knowing which twin is asking them, so the Baudelaires must be smart, smarter than they've ever been before. They can't get caught by the wrong hotel manager and they can't get caught spying. But for once things look like they could change for the children, with the surprise return of Jerome Squalor and Justice Strauss. Both here to help bring the villains to justice and both trying to make it up to children for failing them before.

Happy reading.

Xx
