13 Reasons
Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher

Quick review.

Everyone should read this book once. As a victim of bullying and rumors myself, I definitely feel for Hannah. The topics this book discuss are very relevant and important. Rape culture. Gossip. Slut shaming. Treating women like meat. Mental illness and suicide. This book is a testament to what we must fight to fix in the system. Our children shouldn't feel this way. They shouldn't think dying is the only way out.

Review: Eligible
Eligible: A modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice - Curtis Sittenfeld

Finally, a P&P retelling that doesn't suck. I am always leery of popular fiction because it tends to be overhyped or so cheesy I can't stomach it. But this really pleased me. I don't hand out 5 stars freely.

The characters were so like their original selves, but modernized and even more believable. Mrs. Bennet was just as, if not even more, infuriating than previously. Now she's also racist and hates LGBT people. Lydia is vulgar beyond belief, like she has never even heard of manners. Liz is her usual smart, observant self. They were all well written, with very real modern problems. From transgendered people to invetro-fertilization to just being an adult, this book had it all. I loved it.

And if you know me, you know I am very picky and hard to please with popular books. So pick this up and read it.

Review: Wow
Outlander - Diana Gabaldon

I bowed to peer pressure and read this. I had seen the blurb a lot and been recommended this by Goodreads more times than I cared to see. It just didn't seem like something I would enjoy.

But I can admit when I'm wrong. I loved it. I enjoyed Jamie's barbaric sense of honor and Claire's odd, clumsy but knowing mind.

My only dislike: the length. I feel like sooooo much of this book could have been cut out, and the book would have still been amazing. Some of it really seemed like overkill. Especially at the end with the wolves.

But the filler aside, I really liked this. I don't know if I'll worry with the sequel, because so many times the second book is never as good. Regardless, I am glad I took a chance on this huge brick.
