Goofy fun
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters - Erik Burnham,Dan Schoening,Tom Waltz

I thought this would be goofy, and just okay.   The art was highly stylized, to be goofy in a fun, animated type style, so that probably helped that assumption right along.   This was true to both franchises, but played with a situation where teleportation led to travel through dimensions.

It's a fun concept, and not an original one.   One of my favorite Star Trek episodes is Mirror, Mirror which deals with this issue.  One of my favorite Transformers issues is my Timeline: Shattered Glass issue, partly because I bought two before I realized how rare they were and feel lucky to have gotten one much less two.   And partly because I love how extreme the world is, how brutal the Autobots are, and how good the Decepticons are.

This was clearly just a mishap to have these two groups meet, and the author is well aware that it's just a plot device.   He wisely ignores too much about this, and while the science geeks geek out over how the turtles crossed over into another dimension, how to get back, and then focus on that, the others don't.   It's all in character, and the others simply fret about the evil god, Chi-You, that the Turtles have brought with them - and how to stop it using Ghostbuster methods, and means.    (Casey, their friend, has been possessed by Chi-You, which means that they're even less likely to stay.)

The non-science geek turtles don't ant to stay around, even though they know they have to leave - even though they know the way back is degrading.   The science geeks will take care of it - or they won't - and what use is them staying around when people are in danger?   It's their responsibility, and even if it hadn't been, they can't sit around when someone might get hurt.

Mostly these two groups just riff on each other - and it is goofy.   And adorable.   And harmless fun.   And Janine and April O'Neill?   Get along more than I'd expect them to, and that?   That is also adorable.  Just what I needed yesterday night and this morning.  I actually need something like this again to cheer me up some more.

The Ghostbusters think the Turtles are kung fu martians when they first meet XD

So much cuter than I expected.

Who you gonna call? Heroes in a halfshell!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters - Erik Burnham,Dan Schoening,Tom Waltz

I admit to being a sucker for nostalgia. It's bad enough that I spent a couple hundred dollars to go to a convention just to meet the voice actors and one of the original writers of the comics, Kevin Eastman. And since Ghostbusters and TMNT were huge parts of my childhood, this comic was basically like someone at IDW said "How can we get Liss to give us money? This? Would this do it?"

It absolutely would, and to be perfectly honest, this book was well worth the money to me. It would have been worth buying in a hardcover to me. I don't know if folks coming at this without the nostalgia will have the same attachment that I do, however.

Let's start with the plot - the Turtles are messing around with a new device Donatello and co have created that's meant to teleport them from one place to another in an instant (Mirage comics readers, yeah, it's what you think it is). Except when the turtles, along with April and Casey, give it a try, something goes wrong, because otherwise where would the story come from?

This is the excuse for getting the two together - the Turtles appear in the same place as a major ghost and when the Ghostbusters get there, they naturally think the guys are something supernatural. (I mean honestly, it makes perfect sense, right?)

So now we have our crossover set up, and I want to give it a piece of praise right up front - everyone is absolutely in character. All the turtles, all the Ghostbusters, all the supporting cast. Some get more of an opportunity to show off than others, but everyone is clearly recognizable, and I swear there are times you could cover up the pictures, jsut read the dialogue, and still have a pretty solid idea who's taking to who.

Additionally, it gives pretty much everyone something to do. Some have more, some less, but everyone does something to affect the plot. It can be a little hard sometimes with crossovers with huge casts to make sure everyone gets at least a corner of the spotlight. They made the effort here, and I think it really paid off.

In the end, there is a lot of standing around and talking in this book, and if I wasn't obsessed with the characters and the backgrounds of the franchises, there might be times when I found this to drag a little. But because I loved the way even the slow moments painted the characters, I couldn't hate on it.

This is going to have a place in my rotation of often-reread stories, along with such titles as the original Young Avengers run and Booster Gold. SO enjoyable and so very well presented.

Booknote: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters - Erik Burnham,Dan Schoening,Tom Waltz

(Crossposted from my blog The Itinerant Librarian).

This was a light and entertaining crossover comic. A new invention, a dimensional transporter, goes haywire, and the Turtles get transported to a very different New York City, the NYC of the Ghostbusters. As usual in this kind of crossover, the two teams need to learn how to work together. In this case, they unite to fight an ancient evil that followed the Turtles through the transporter.

Though it is labeled children's fiction, it is pretty much good entertainment for all ages. It is certainly one I can recommend to public libraries, especially if they already have other TMNT or Ghostbuster comics. These are not the Nickelodeon TMNT, but the comic will likely appeal to those fans as well.

The volume provides a nicely paced, entertaining story with some good humor and plenty of action. It is neat to see how the two teams come to work together. Also, it is a nice and very colorful with the art, which enhances the volume.

Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters by Dan Schoening, Erik Burnham and Tom Waltz
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters - Erik Burnham,Dan Schoening,Tom Waltz

Man, I had so much fun reading this work. Basically, the Turtles end up hitching a ride into the wrong dimension as a result of one of Donatello's malfunctioning inventions. They arrive in New York, but end up encountering a dangerous spirit who takes control of one of their friends (Casey). Luckily, the Ghostbusters arrive to help matters out. I totally ship Donatello and Egon as potential BFFs (Raphael and Peter too - those two had more quotable one-liners in this comic than a little bit).

The best Ghostbuster/Turtle relationship though? Winston and Leonardo - those two had mutual respect for one another. The storyline was strong as the Turtles and Ghostbusters join forces against this immortal presence and have to outwit the being's manipulations before the Ghostbusters can find a way to send the Turtles back home.

Overall, the comic does a fine job with the storyline and development between the characters. The art is decent, more in line with newer character designs, and they're consistent in style. Overall, I'd definitely love to read another crossover story with the Turtles and Ghostbusters down the line.

Overall score: 4.5/5 stars

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher.
