“WELCOME TO LUXEMBOURG, Astral November Nine Tango X-ray. Runway Two- Four, cleared to land, wind two-five-zero at six knots, right turn off.” Tris acknowledged the landing clearance.

“Gear down, before landing checklist,” Deter said.

Tris grasped the handle that lowered the Astral’s landing gear. She kept her left index finger pointed at the three lights that would turn green when each of the plane’s wheels were down and locked. After a few seconds, Tris saw the left main and nose gear lights illuminate, but the right gear light remained dark.

“I do not have three green. No three green,” she said quickly. The aircraft was just six hundred feet above the ground.

“What the fuck?” Deter screamed but took no action as the Astral moved closer to the ground.

Deter hesitated so Tris made the call. “We don’t have three green. Go around!”

“Go around!” Deter slammed full power on the aircraft. He swore under his breath as the airplane’s nose hesitated, then pitched up.

Tris lifted the gear handle to stow the gear. Maybe raising it would shake something loose, and that third light would come on next time they tried to put the wheels down. But first, the Astral had to get away from other air traffic.

“Tower, Nine Tango X-ray, missed approach. We can’t con-firm that the landing gear is down and locked. We need a vector to an area where we can diagnose the problem.” Deter nodded along with her demand.

“Roger, Nine Tango X-ray, fly heading two- four-zero, climb and maintain six thousand.

Let us know what happens.”

“What is wrong with the goddamn gear? Recycle it! Now!” Deter’s words landed like blows, his anger unrestrained. Tris recovered quickly; she had to. And she couldn’t punch back. The five souls aboard the Astral were in real danger. They weren’t on the ground with options—they were in the air with none.

Five coffee mugs, three notebooks

Excerpt 3 (Steamy battle scene between hero & heroine)

Once the challenge had been laid, and he truly accepted it, Davyn only saw red as he went at Shea. As he fought her as he would any other. Of course, he had fought women on occasion. Those who trained here to be warriors. But he had never fought a woman like Shea. One who wanted blood and was more skilled than most.

Far more skilled as it turned out.

Something he soon learned as he went at her with a fury that seemed to saturate him. He knew some of it was jealousy from what he had witnessed with the twins, but it was more than that. Rage from somewhere else. Another time and place.

It was also deep-seated anger that she had risked her life like that.

He kept all thoughts from her as they began battling. Axe against axe then sword against mace. An interesting dance as he slashed and she swung. Yet they fought through the red haze of their dragon eyes, her movements talented and fast as he dodged her again and again only for her to dodge him over and over.

They were well matched and rarely got one over on the other as both became slick with sweat. Though it took a great deal of strength, he never became distracted by the way she moved her slender yet curvy body when battling. There was a sensuality about it that he knew she did on purpose. Another means to distract him. Disarm him.

“I knew you were a jerk,” her thoughts eventually drifted through his mind as they battled harder and his ability to keep her at telepathic bay weakened. As they tossed aside their sword and mace and began a whole new type of dance with daggers alone. “But not this much of one. Not this clueless of one.”

“I did nothing,” he reminded aloud as they circled and clenched two daggers each.

“You did it all, Cupid. You drew them to you to get what you wanted.”

“I did,” she agreed through clenched teeth as she stabbed at him, but he evaded.

“And what I wanted will help us, or did you not get that?”

“What you got nearly had you kidnapped, then likely put through unimaginable torture,” he growled, stabbing his dagger at her in rapid succession as she did the same before both evaded and spun.

“Yet all the while you smiled, flirted,” he ground out, angrier by the moment. “All the while, you seemed to enjoy it…them.”

She released an inhuman, borderline dragon-like sound as she came at him so hard, slicing and dicing, that he stayed inches away from her angry, relentless blades before stumbling. When he did, it was enough for her to take advantage with alarming precision. The next thing he knew, she slammed him down on his back, straddled him and wedged one dagger against his throat and the other, yet again, against his balls.

“No,” she roared when he started to make a move. “Stay still or I will end first your manhood then your life, beast.”

His body trembled in response to a variety of things. The rush of battling a worthy opponent. The jealousy he still felt at what he had witnessed today. The rage he felt because he couldn’t protect her better. The fear he felt because her life was on the line.

Then there was her appearance right now.

Her skin sheening and sparkling, she appeared to be a wild dragon angel who’d come for his soul with her hair stuck up at odd angles and her cat-like eyes riotous as she glared down at him. Her chest heaved, and her nipples were pebbled. Her slender, toned thighs clamped around his waist and her hot center about burned through him.

“What do you want, Cupid?” he grunted, as aroused as her in an instant. He was barely able to focus on anything but what it would feel like to be inside her. Yet he kept it together enough to position his blades against her calves.

“Now you ask what I want,” she said, her teeth still clenched as the corner of her mouth curled up in obvious appreciation of his blade positioning. “And here you call yourself a thinker.”

As their eyes held, he finally caught a glimpse of something other than pride that she had done so well handling those twins. He finally saw something other than cockiness that she had gotten answers that still had him puzzled. That still made his inner dragon roar and rage and battered at his subconscious in ways he didn’t understand. What he saw in her eyes now wasn’t what he expected. Wasn’t what he wanted to see. Not ever when he looked into Shea’s eyes.

Raw pain. Hurt. Even fear.

Kade’s footsteps were heavy as he approached and stared down at her. “This isn’t going to work. You need to be wearing something lighter, or we’ll never make it to Lazen.”

Hadley tried for a weak shrug but could barely muster the energy. “What do you suggest?”

Kade raised an eyebrow, and a deep frown appeared on his face as he considered her. He continued to stare at her as she sat, legs sprawled out on the ground. “The best I can come up with is cutting your clothing.”

His eyes narrowed as he searched the length of her. A bolt of alarm jostled her into thinking. “How much are you cutting off?”

Kade dipped his chin, his voice low as he spoke. “Enough, so you don’t keep fainting, enough, so you still pass for a boy.”

He reached for a knife and wore the slightest of smiles as he unsheathed it. “Let’s hope you have hairy legs then eh?”

Hadley’s lips split into a smile before she remembered she was annoyed with him for being so smug.

The year is 2025.

Up above, a vast scene of grey clouds moved across the sky as a calm fall breeze could be felt in the air. From afar, the city of Hollandview stood. All around, windows were shattered with debris sitting in the streets. As quiet as it could be, no sign of life showed within this lonely city.

Three years have passed since the invasion of the creatures known as Instinctive Outside Beings (IOBs). Wiping out cities and towns, the creatures wrecked their havoc on the world while taking the lives of millions. Fighting back, the world tried to counter this new threat while they were ultimately destroyed. With militaries and countries being obliterated, the world slowly began to die while the creatures only continued to live.

Though it all seemed to be lost in the world, it wasn’t until south of the city limits of Hollandview where peaks of life could be seen in a section called Sector A. With buildings still left standing in the area and roads cleared of gravel, people dressed in rags still walked amongst each other as they talked and lived their days. With their faces filled with dirt, they all moved around the streets of the city, as some rested eating scraps of food while they watched the scene of people moving around. Even above in buildings, children and adults sat in the broken window sills as they looked up into the sky hoping sunlight would come out some time.

While most of the people resided in the streets of the sector, soldiers who guarded the city called IOB Containment Forces or IOBCFs, stood above on the building tops, looking at one another as they carried their weapons. Waiting and watching for anything to come.

Wearing a navy blue jacket uniform and a black vest with the logo of a fist and a ribbon, these containment forces were the only defenses against any threats to Sector A as they only consisted of 800 soldiers, put in charge of defending over the 4,000 civilians that reside in the city.

Outside Sector A, nothing but abandoned highways could be seen. Full of abandon cars and garbage, a clear scene of woodland terrain covered the outside of the city. Going on for miles, nothing could be seen. No town, no cities. No roads.

Everything Carina thought she knew has been turned on its head and she must harness her burgeoning power, unravel her vampire family’s web of deceit, and fight to have a love life while evil’s minions hound her every move in this thrilling urban fantasy read with some fascinating and unique vampire elements. The characters are strong, captivating and they easily draw readers into their story, all while projecting such strong personalities that readers almost feel as if these characters are about to leap off the pages, especially the heroine of the story, Carina. She has a bit of a spunky, live life large attitude despite some troubling setbacks in her past and in the romance department she pretty much likes it to keep it friends with benefits until she meets Alexander and then the romance part of this story heat up quickly with lots of electrifying chemistry that sizzles throughout the pages between these two. Carina and Alexander’s First Date

… My hands roamed from his chest to his biceps. Smooth and solid, no hint of flab. Want you to wrap them around my body while you take me from behind. My little fantasy expelled the air from my lungs in a loud rush. Energy pulsed from my hands, hot and bubbly. His muscles twitched in response.

“Adrian was amused I’d followed a girl into the club.” His hands curved around my waist. “Until he realized it was you. He told me who you were, but he wasn’t happy about it.”

“What did you do then?” My voice wavered, his touch devastating, distracting.

His grip tightened. “I left.”

“The law according to Thomas. Your club is off-limits to all non-humans, except on Sundays. You yourself are off-limits to all vampires every day. Or you were then, anyway.”

I frowned. “You’re saying my uncle forbade you to see me?” This was so Romeo and Juliet. I didn’t like it. That story never ended well.

A hand slid to my back, pressing possessively. “Yes.”

I rolled my eyes. Thomas, interfering in my life. Again. “How long did you obey?”

His eyes narrowed. “Too long. But I sensed your presence after that whenever you were nearby. You spend a lot of time in my neighborhood after dark.”

“Adrian said the exact thing to me.” I bit my lip. Oops, now he knew I was talking about him. I felt myself blush like a crushing teenager.

He grinned at my discomfort. “You were hard to avoid. So I stopped trying. I showed up at the museum though I knew Thomas would intercept me. But it was worth it, to have you finally see me. I had to know.”

Talk time was over. We stared. And stared. And stared some more.

His smoky blue eyes bled to black and his power pushed at me, hot and hard, causing a response inside me, like a rumbling volcano deep in my core. My eyes widened. Was this the power my family had mentioned? No longer dormant and infinitely more intense than a little static electricity in my palms.

Alexander crushed his lips to mine. Need roared through me leaving me breathless with edgy hunger.

My hands burrowed into his thick, silky hair, holding his head as if he might try to escape. He growled his approval against my lips, his kiss growing more insistent. His tongue explored my mouth. He tasted metallic, like the blood he’d consumed.

Again, I found I liked the taste. My tongue danced with his and delved into his mouth, searching for more penny metal flavor. He groaned and tightened his embrace.

I thought we’d devour each other forever, but Alexander stiffened and his head snapped up. His eyes glinted black as night, wild with lust and...aggression? He bared his teeth in a snarl, canines morphing into fangs. Long, sharp, lethal.

On instinct, I pushed against his chest to get some distance between those teeth and my neck. He ignored me, head whipping around to survey the room. A feral growl erupted from his throat and he shoved me under the table.

My cries of protest were drowned out by animalistic roars and breaking furniture. From my spot under the table, I felt around on the bench for my coat, all the while keeping an eye on the room. Dark blurs flitted back and forth, pieces of table and chair flew by...Bingo. My coat. I searched the pocket for my phone. Once in hand, I hit the button for my boys.

The fighting around me stopped. The familiar techno ring tone of Mark’s phone broke the sudden silence. He’s here?

The table above me was tossed away. Steel hands grabbed my legs and dragged me, face down. I dropped the phone and flattened my palms on the floor, trying to resist. One hand bumped into a steak knife and I grabbed it. My assailant flipped me over and lunged. I aimed for his heart but the knife plunged into his throat. …

Celia’s Bewitching Halloween Tale

I grew up listening to my Irish grandmother’s stories about the Fae, including her encounter with a Banshee in her family’s cellar when she was a teenager. Of her many stories, this is my favorite, and I love to share it every Halloween. Enjoy!

Bumped by the Banshee
by Celia Breslin

… I lived in a large two-story house with my parents, younger sister, and grandmother. It was a cold, winter evening, nothing special or out of the ordinary.

My family dined together, then my sister and I cleaned up while our parents and grandmother drank tea. We joined them at the dining table to do our homework, but my grandmother said she was tired and went upstairs to bed. My parents followed shortly after that, but my father paused on the landing.

“Maeve, it’s going to be a cold night. Fetch us some coal, please.”

I abandoned my homework, grabbed the empty coal bucket from the kitchen, and went down into the cellar. I filled my bucket and returned to the stairs. I had one foot on the first step when the temperature in the cellar, already cold, dropped dramatically. Chills ran down my back. Behind me, someone moaned.

But how could that be? I was alone...

Terror rooted me to the spot. The keening grew louder. I dropped my bucket and covered my ears. A cold wind bumped against my back. I stumbled forward as the shrieking wind rushed over me and up the stairs.

But how could that be? The cellar had no windows...

Above me, the cellar door slammed shut. The sound broke me from my stupor. I screamed and ran up the stairs and out of the cellar, through the kitchen and dining room, and up the stairs to my room. My parents and sister found me under my bed, shaking like a puppy lost in a snowstorm.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” They asked me, while pulling me from my hiding place.

“I heard the Banshee wail.”

We stared at each other in silence, all of us reaching the same conclusion moments later. We hurried to my grandmother’s room.

She was dead.
