Hotter
Up In Flames (Eternal Flame Book 2) - Peter Styles

This is book # 2, in the Eternal Flame series.  This book can be read as a standalone novel.  For reader enjoyment and understanding of the series, I recommend reading in order.

Tim & Nicky have been together for a long time.  So when things get odd, and turn the door to suspicious, he tries to give his man the benefit of the doubt.  He has many people in his life who do not understand his relationship, and they all think he should walk away.

Nicky tries hard to make Tim feel loved.  If only Tim had known what he was planning.  He would have been able to help him sooner.  As the evidence piles up, can they stay strong against the strain?

This series is definitely hot.  My biggest complaint was that this story could have been longer.  I felt a serious rush there at the end.  The story is complete, and moves right along.  I just felt like I wanted more.  I give this book a 2/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Mystery
Fear of Getting Burned (Eternal Flame Book 1) - Peter Styles

Kyle & Rick do not get along.  Rick is very snappy and impatient with Kyle.  He appears to be offended he is being bothered.  This is sad, considering Kyle was Rick's hero for a day at least.

Rick is just different.  From a different culture, region, country, etc.  They just need to learn to communicate on a level that works between them.  The attraction is certainly there for both sides, and this helps pave the way.

This story seems hot and cold.  I found myself wondering if they should even get together.  I was just not prepared for the personality clashes.  Overall, a quick and simple read.  I give this story a 3/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

The Eternal Flame - Greg Egan
The Eternal Flame - Greg Egan

In the sequel to The Clockwork Rocket (one of my favourite books of the year, because women doing science), the Peerless is already several generations into space. There's a population crisis going on: women starve themselves in the hope of only having two children (instead of the usual four). Carlo, a biologist, is busy looking at ways of reducing fertility, and his findings threaten to shake the very foundations of the culture his people have built aboard the flying mountain; while his co Carla, a physicist, looks for the elusive Eternal Flame, the technology which will allow the Peerless to return to the home world and rescue everyone from the threat of the Hurtlers.

There's still a lot of physics in this book. I still didn't understand any of it.

As to the feminist undertones: I don't think they're anything like as striking and as, perhaps, revolutionary as they were in Rocket. I feel like in the first book we saw a group of women supporting each other and defiantly doing science despite what everyone thought of them. And that was empowering and wonderful, especially in a genre (hard SF) which is generally dominated by maleness.

But the surprise has worn off in Flame. The fact that sex and death are the same for women in Egan's universe was in Rocket an immediate and striking way of reframing what feminism means, but it's a blunt tool to build a trilogy on. Though there are scenes in Flame which made me viscerally angry, I don't feel like it's anger directed anywhere. Aboard the Peerless, women are allowed to be scientists and councillors and engineers, as they weren't on the home world, so the same kind of visceral anger doesn't feel like an appropriate response any more: it needs to be more nuanced, more political, less obviously weighted.

That said, Flame's ending was as perfect for the book it finished as Rocket's was, rather neatly avoiding the trap of needing men to save women (and thereby make their choices for them). It's not about men; it's about what women want and women need. There's certainly nothing objectionable about Egan's brand of feminism, and indeed there's much to be lauded about it. It simply loses its way a little, here.

Eternal Flame
Eternal Flame - Cynthia Eden

Good story line, lots going on. I enjoyed Jana and Zane both individually and together. I liked the idea of having a supernatural that can remove powers and "give" them to someone else. That was different. I liked that Jana embraced her fire and realized it was an integral part of her. It was nice Dee and Erin made appearances.
I think the most disappointing thing is I was hoping Pak and Tony would have their own stories too. The way this ended I felt the setup was there. I looked at the next (and last) book, but nope, neither are listed as a character (in fact, I'm not sure how the Night Watch universe plays into it from reading the blurb).

Eternal Flame (Guardians, #1)
Eternal Flame (Guardians, #1) - Valerie ... Eternal Flame (Guardians, #1) - Valerie Twombly I thoroughly enjoyed Eternal Flame which is book 1 in the Guardians series. It had suspense, action, mystery, and a love story that kept me rooting for the couple and hoping they would find their way to one another before all the obstacles against them really took root. Marcus is so lost after losing everyone he loved in the brutal war except his sister. He doesn't believe he wants to love again, much less take a mate. That feeling stays strong right up until the point that he meets Cassandra and then his basic instincts take over. Cassandra has her own wounds surrounding love, and she is determined to never allow anyone close to her heart again. While fighting a lust that is undeniable, Cassandra is desperate to protect her heart.....there's just one problem, Marcus is her destine mate and demands to be let in.

Valerie Twombly does an excellent job of building a visual of the alternate world the guardians live in, as well as building a sense of cohesiveness between the main characters. Her inclusion of the other warriors in the main story helped readers to get to know each of them better, but most of all to crave their individual stories. I'm so looking forward to learning more about King Aidyn and the depth of his overall power!

If you have enjoyed Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld, Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed Series, or Rebbeca Zanetti Dark Protectors Series, you will most certainly enjoy Eternal Flame! I'm giving this one 3.5 notes, and 4 flames! A great start to what seems to be shaping up to be a great series!
