Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Wonder - R.J. Palacio

I can’t remember the last time a book made me cry. I’m being serious, I never cried when some of my all-time favorite series ended. I didn’t even cry when people were crying after the last Harry Potter book came out. Heck, I didn’t even cry at the end of Allegiant. I just don’t cry.

So I’m wondering (haha, get it?) what made me cry about Wonder. Yeah, I cried, like with the whole tears leaving my eyes kind of thing.

I’m not going to make this a personal review. But, on a level, in a certain way, yes. Yes I could connect with August with my past growing self. And I cried. Because August would cry, he asked questions about why he was ugly, he felt he got used to the way people could see his face and he reminded me of myself when I was younger.

No, I don’t have a deformity. And I continue to consider myself blessed everyday. Yes, I had a problem over the years that was hard for me to get used to. I am fine now, because I’ve grown up. And puberty and stuff. And I’ve learned to stand up for myself, and thankfully, I’ve known wonderful people in my life. While it is true that I didn’t go through the things August did, his feelings were so real. So, I salute R.J. Palacio for that.

Another great thing about this book was that we were showed more than one point of view! There are so many people who are tied into August’s story, and it was amazing seeing their side of the story as well! :D So, I think that the only point of view I wanted to see was Julian’s. :D

This book was just beautiful. I loved all the characters, and they were all special in their own way. I really wish that I had something else to say for this, but this is all going to be gushing. Go read this. Like, please. I’m telling you. Just. Just read this. :D

Overall, Wonder is a book that is heartbreaking and wonderful. It’ll make you laugh and cry! I know it did to me! I’m completely in love with this! :D So go, read this!

Thanks for reading my review everyone, and hope you have a great day! Until the next one!

The Stars Never Rise by Rachel Vincent (The Stars Never Rise #1)
The Stars Never Rise - Rachel Vincent

Not the most perfect book but definitely one of the most enjoyable that I’ve read in a long time!

I didn’t think that urban-fantasy/dystopian would be a good combination because I’ve never quite read one that really worked for me! But this combination is fantastic.

Nina Kane is a sixteen-year-old girl who lives in New Temperance, one of the towns in demon-savaged America. She will do anything to protect her fifteen-year-old sister, Melanie. She has to resort to terrible situations to provide for her sister and herself since their mom is a druggie who leaves at night, arrives at dawn, and then sleeps the rest of the day away without taking care of Nina or Melanie. Then one day, Melanie makes a mistake that forces them on the run. :D

I enjoyed this so much that this book was difficult to put down. I went to the doctor’s office? I read there. I had free time? I read this.

Of course, the thing I loved about this story was how realistic it showed Nina’s life. Of course, I’d gotten a bit worried in the middle because of the direction I’d thought the story was starting to go in, but the romance went in a direction that didn’t interfere with the main plot of the story, so I was okay with it in the end, and hopefully it stays in the same manner in the next books! :D

I thought that Nina as a main character was awesome because later on in the book she doesn’t let anyone tell her what to do and how to do it. Nina ends up kicking serious butt, and I felt so proud of her, because even if she had a bad past, she came such a long way! I can’t wait to see it in the rest of the series!

Nina and Melanie were ready to die for one another. And in parts of the book that they weren’t together you could still see their relationship strengths! :D

All the side characters were fun and had distinct personalities! Devi—who I had a problem with a first because I thought she was the typical female character to hate someone for no reason, but she’s great—is the smartest! Reese is the funny one! Maddock is the great friend and extremely loyal! :D

Overall, The Stars Never Rise is a great first in a series! The twists and stuff can be unexpected in some cases and not in others. If you want a great book to read with a great  main character, great side characters, and sisters ready to die for one another then read this!

Thanks for reading everyone and have a great day! Until the next one! :D

Mean book is MEAN
Miss Mayhem - Rachel Hawkins

***This review has also been posted on The Social Potato

Oh Miss Mayhem. How I loved you. You are a cruel book that deserves some reprimanding for how you decided to break my heart with that ending.

It's funny though because that ending, as cruel as it is, actually sealed my love for the book. It’s surprising, and those of you who have read the book might look at me thinking if I have lost my marbles, but I love the ending. And maybe I have (lost my marbles), but I think the ending shows such a HUGE change in Harper as a character and at that moment, I learned to love her like I had never before in this series. I learned to truly appreciate everything she has been through and I finally understood all the things she has really been giving up.

Harper is a great character. She may be snarky like Sophie from the Hex Hall series but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. Harper is a confident female lead. She is self-assured her biggest character flaw is that she tries too hard to be perfect. She has got TOOO many things on her plate yet she somehow manages to balance them and still retain her sanity.

She is well dressed, super smart and involved in a lot of things but still manages to have a social life. She is surprisingly popular and not one of those stereotypical ‘I am super awkward’ female leads (although there is NOTHING wrong with that, so long as it’s done fantabulously). I know when I first started the series, I had a hard time relating to Harper. She is a character so different from who I am and sometimes I just had a hard time getting into her head but in this book, she truly shines.

Harper undergoes so much development. She is still the same awesome her but she is starting to realize she cannot control everything and everyone. And she starts to respect other people’s decisions. This is so beautifully highlighted by the ending of the book, which tore me, but also gave me a new found respect for Harper. For her to accept that she cannot keep everyone safe, and that she is not responsible for everything, really marked a turning point for her as a character and I cannot wait to see how awesome she will be in book 3.

I have spend that much time talking about Harper without even mentioning David. Ahhh David. You beautiful creature you. How I love you so. How I wish I could hunt you down and confront you about the stuff you pulled at the end of the book. David is just such a lovely love interest. He is the complete opposite of Harper in some ways, yet the perfect match for her in others because while he may not be popular, he may be a little nerdy, and he may have no fashion sense, he is also super smart and just as confident.

Harper and David work fabulously as a couple and while their relationship is sorely tested in the novel for obvious reasons (the whole oracle thing can be a real bummer sometimes), I really cannot wait to see where things will go with the two in Book 3.

We even get to see Ryan in a whole new light in this book. I've always been a little weird about Ryan, given his and Harper's past, but Hawkins just manages to make me like him. Over the course of the book, I found myself forgiving him and appreciating him more than I had previously.

I’d say stuff about the plot but I honestly don’t know what to say. It’s fast paced, stuff happens, it’s super fun to read, but at the same time, this book is more about the characters than it is about the plot and while that might not work in some cases, it works perfectly fine in this one.

We see great friendships in this book (and I mean great, Harper never undervalues her friends and that is amazing), great relationships with family members (can I get three cheers for Aunt Jewel), and great romance (although there were things that happened that made me really sad).

This is such a fun book to read and has surprisingly deep moments. It’s great brain candy and I’d recommend this series (since this is book 2) to fans of the Hex Hall series and anyone looking for a great and enjoyable book to read.

review SPOILER ALERT! 2014-03-28 14:08
Let the Sky Fall - Shannon Messenger

My Initial Reaction:

Did it seriously need to end that way!?!?!? I can't wait until 2014 to see what happens next!!!! I need to read it NOW!!!!!

My Actual Review:

I read this book for free on Pulseit and it was amazing. I thought that it was great that this book was different. So many young adult paranormal books contain vampires, fairies, and werewolves, but this one was all about sylphs. I haven't read too many books that are about sylphs, so this was amazing.

I felt so bad for Audra. She hates herself because she feels that it's all her fault that her father and Vane's parents are dead. And, to make it worse, her mother blames Audra for it, too. Because of this guilt, she dedicates her entire life, from the time soon after those three died, to protect Vane. She refuses to be happy!!

It was just SO SO SAD!!!! Let's bring this to a happier note, maybe.

So Vane has remembered Audra from the day when their parents died. And when he sees her, he remembers her. He can't figure out why she's so familiar, but she is familiar. Audra eventually realizes that they need to be around each other and she needs to teach him how to control the wind, because the person who killed their families is coming back.

I also must add that while reading this book, I had the Adele song, that has the same name, stuck in my head. I like that song, but it got annoying at times. I just wanted to concentrate more on this amazing book!!

I read this almost a year ago, so I don't remember too much. I hope this is enough...

Audra

I loved her and she was amazing. I felt so bad for her and I just wanted her to be happy. He felt so guilty and I hated her mom. Her mom was such a BITCH!! Ugh! I just want Audra to be happy!!!!!

Vane

He kinda annoyed me, but I also loved him at the same time. Such conflicting emotions. I just want him and Audra to be together so they can be happy and not lonely! That's all I want in my life!!!!!

Overall, this book was awesome. It's paranormal, yet it's different from so many young adult paranormal books. It's so creative! I can't wait to read the next book!!!!!

Who Killed Kayla Sloane?
The Killing of Kayla Sloane - Kim Harrington

Not a long review, but a short one. (sick, but I feel like writing a review)

When I first pre-ordered this book I was confused. The two titles differ greatly from each other. Dead and Buried to The Killing of Kayla Sloane.

I must say, now after reading this book, that I find the second title more fitting to the book.

The book itself was really wonderful and great. I loved how terrifying it was at times, how it first started all fluffy but soon escalated to something terrible and scary.

Kayla (our ghost) is a total mean girl. She was that when she was alive, but in her death she is even more so. I can kind of understand it, when no one can see you, you are desperate to know who killed you, but still, I am sure she could also have tried nicer ways.

Our main character Jade was a really nice and great character, I really loved her and how she interacted with people. And she was quite a Nancy Drew.

The book left me guessing until the end, it wasn't who I thought it would be.

I would recommend this book to everyone who loves ghosts, paranormal, love, romance and a bit of sleuthing.
