Love's A Witch by Roxy Mews Review
Love's a Witch (Hart Clan Hybrids) - Roxy Mews

Since a very real set of vampire fangs sank into her arm, Mary Fields has accepted that she’s part of a magical world where all her dreams and visions finally make sense.

As she journeys to find a Wiccan mentor who’ll help her get a handle on her new powers, she clings to the one relic from her former life—a sketchpad. She also tries to ignore the red mating aura she’s beginning to see around her only companion on the trip—the hottie she used to read to at the library.

Mary’s readings were once a fun distraction from the cruel joke the supernatural world played on Craig Hart. He’s supposed to protect her from vampires out to make her their personal blood supply, yet he can’t bring himself to keep his paws off.

As Mary digs deep for the inner strength to protect herself, one stumble off her magical path sends her straight into Craig’s arms. Where love burns…but so does a truth that could turn that red mating aura into a river of blood.

Review

When I saw this book was out, I did a happy dance. I adored the first book in the series. LOVED IT.

This book made me a little nuts. The world building is great. The series plot arch is solid. Character motivation and communication was just off. It was like each scene was two beats behind. Why would they think or do that? The plot of being chased and the harvesters provided enough conflict. Coming into one's magic and starting a new Clan is enough. Mate denial is not needed and the reasoning on both parts between the starts and stalls in the relationship and even between Clan members, bleh.

And after all that, a cliffhanger of sorts--not in the relationship but in the series arc. We earned the next chapters. They could be retold through other points of view if needed in the next book.

I will try the next book but not with as much joy.

Paranormal Curves: Curvy Heroines of Paranormal Romance
Hunter's Moon (Tales of the Sazi, Book 1) - 'C. T. Adams', 'Cathy Clamp'
King of Clubs - Cheyenne McCray
Night Play - Sherrilyn Kenyon
The Marriage Spell - Mary Jo Putney
Heart Secret - Robin D. Owens
Stone and Earth - Cindy Spencer Pape
A Love Worth Biting For - Roxy Mews
The Last Hour of Gann - R. Lee Smith
Big Bad Wolf - Christine Warren
Bonds of Justice - Nalini Singh

Continuing my look at the Plus Sized Heroine in Romance, let us take a look into the world of shifters, vampires, aliens, and other magical beings.

The prototype heroine in this sub genre is kick ass and therefore very toned. Also, nanos or immortality of some kind tend to correct all body issues and keep everyone in the tip top shape.

So, other than a sub sub genre of BBW Erotic Paranormal Romance in which many of the books are not so good or simply decent, the more rounded heroine isn't so common. The big and tall heroine is though and that is awesome sauce but another post.

Here are my recommendations for great love stories with Big and Beautiful Women in the lead for Paranormal, Science Fiction, Urban Fiction, and Fantasy Romance.

In Science Fiction Romance, a sub genre I wish would blow up like New Adult so I would have more to read.

The Last Hour of Gann by R. Lee Smith digs into the world of fat hatred with a heroine who is pushy and not accommodating and then her weight is used as weapon to attack her.  The weight issues in this book are painful as the writer really highlights the societal issues around body types.  It is a grand read all around and this is just one of the threads.

Clearly, I need more good SFR BBW recs!  I think there are some Cyborg/Alien ones but they are more 3 stars to me and I try to rec 4 stars and higher unless it is just the bomb in terms of the theme.

 In Paranormal Romance,

1. A Love Worth Biting For  by Roxy Mews

2. Stone and Earth  by Cindy Spencer Pape

3. Bonds of Justice by Nalini Singh

4. Heart Secret by Robin Owens

5. The Marriage Spell: A Novel by Mary Jo Putney

6. Night Play by Sherrilyn Kenyon

7. Big Bad Wolf (The Others) by Christine Warren

In Fantasy,

Wonderland: King of Clubs by Cheyenne McCray  This is good erotic romance with a Alice in Wonderland like world.

In Urban Fantasy,

Hunter's Moon (Tales of the Sazi) by CT Adams and Cathy Clamp. I think this is one of the most underrated Shifter Romance Series out there. The world building is beyond excellent. The love stories are compelling and its just plain cool.  This book kicks it all off.

Dead Sexy: Best Vampire Romances on the Lighter Side
A Love Worth Biting For - Roxy Mews
The Warlord Wants Forever (Immortals After Dark #1) - Kresley Cole
A Quick Bite - Lynsay Sands
One Bite With A Stranger (The Others, Book 1) - Christine Warren
Driving Mr. Dead - Molly Harper
Bad Mouth - Angela McCallister
Take it Like a Vamp - Candace Havens
Hybrid Misfit - Eve Langlais
Undead and Unwed - MaryJanice Davidson
A Girl's Guide to Vampires - Katie MacAlister

I have been reading Vampire Romance long enough to have been irrated when Twilight made a big splash because while it has its pleasures it is far from the best of its genre.

I think of Twilight is like the Carl's Jr of Vampire Romances--it is not Trueburger,  or Hodad's, or 5 Guys but its good and edible enough. And truth to tell I have eaten at Carl's far more times than at these other yummy places. Common can be very good.

And best of all Twilight made Vampire Romance and Paranormal Romance in general very profitable and thus many great writers got a chance to shine. A rising tide lifts all boats.

Here are some of my favorite Vampire Romances that take a lighter, funnier view of the Dark Ones.  In no particular order...

1. A Love Worth Biting For (Hart Clan Hybrids) by Roxy Mews

2. Secrets: Volumes 3 and 4 Angela Knight's "Blood and Kisses"

3. The Warlord Wants Forever (Immortals After Dark) by Cole, Kresley

4. A Quick Bite (Argeneau Vampires, Book 1) by Sands, Lynsay

5. One Bite With A Stranger (The Others, Book 1) by Warren, Christine

6. Driving Mr. Dead by Molly Harper

7. Bad Mouth (Entangled Covet) by Angela McCallister

8. Take it Like a Vamp (Entangled Covet) by Candace Havens

9. Hybrid Misfit by Eve Langlais

10. Undead and Unwed (Queen Betsy, Book 1) by Davidson, MaryJanice

11. A Girl's Guide to Vampires (Dark Ones) by MacAlister, Katie

Did I miss any of your favorites? Let me know!

A Love Worth Biting For - Roxy Mews

Things I liked about the book - the unique way this author built her werewolves and vamps (at least I've never come across anything quite like it), and the author's voice felt "honest" when she was describing the feelings the h had for the H (not sure how else to describe it, but in her dedication she described how upon first meeting her husband she knew that was it for her - or something like that - and I think that translated into the book).

Things I didn't like - I really have difficulties with books in which there is obviously a big secret being kept from the h that everyone refuses to tell her (in this case I can count three big revelations - the one towards the end I'm not really sure was necessary) and those difficulties are compounded when the h doesn't demand answers (with her fists, if necessary). And I'd really rather have traded some more time getting to know the Pack for fewer steamy scenes.

In the end, the book took me a while to read and at only 157 pages, seemed to drag a bit. It was ok, and I'm not chomping at the bit for the next installment.
