Deadly Heroines in a Romance Series

Sie hatte in ihrem Leben schon viele Namen. Geboren wurde sie als "Kathleen" Lannigan. "Kit" war ihr Spitzname im Kindergarten und in der Grundschule, bis zu dem verhängnisvollen Tag, als sie zu dem netten fremden Mann ins Auto stieg. "Beth" war der Name, den ihr Entführer ihr gab, und so hieß sie fünf lange Jahre, in denen sie mit "Daddy" Mel zusammenlebte und mit ihm und seinen Freunden geheime Filme in versteckten Kellern drehen musste. "Kick" nannte sie sich schließlich selber nach ihrer Befreiung.

Die Themen dieses Thrillers sind so schockierend wie (leider) realistisch: Menschenhandel, organisierter Kindesmissbrauch und Kinderpornographie. Kleine Kinder werden gehalten wie Tiere, verkauft und getauscht und zum Sex gezwungen.

Ich rechne der Autorin hoch an, dass sie nichts davon explizit beschreibt. Es gibt keine Szenen, in denen Kinder geschlagen, gequält oder vergewaltigt werden. Die Themen sind auch so bedrückend genug, ohne dass der Leser zum Voyeur der sexuellen Gewalt gemacht wird.

Kann man bei so einem Buch eigentlich die Originalität bewerten? Leider könnte viel der Handlung direkt aus dem Leben gegriffen sein, denn so etwas passiert wirklich, jeden Tag und überall. Aber dennoch ist die Geschichte, die die Autorin aus diesen Splittern Realität zusammensetzt, einfallsreich, spannend und überraschend.

Kick Lannigan ist eine ungewöhnliche Heldin. Ihre schrecklichen Erlebnisse haben sie natürlich geprägt - so betreibt sie diverse Kampfsportarten und kann mit den verschiedensten Waffen umgehen, um sich wenigstens halbwegs sicher zu fühlen. Sie muss Tag für Tag mit dem Wissen leben, dass die "Beth-Movies", die Filme, die mit ihr gedreht wurden, immer noch die beliebtesten und am häufigsten heruntergeladenen Kinderpornos sind, auch noch viele Jahre nach ihrer Befreiung.

Trotzdem lässt sie sich nicht in die Opferrolle drängen - auch nicht von ihrer Mutter, die aus ihrem Status als "Kidnap Mom" eine Karriere gemacht hat, immer noch regelmäßig Interviews gibt und Privatfotos von Kick an Zeitungen und Fernsehstationen verkauft.

Aber dennoch lebt irgendwo in Kick immer noch die kleine Beth, die sich erschreckenderweise nach "Daddy" Mel sehnt und ihn vermisst, trotz allem, was er ihr angetan hat...

Mir war Kick sehr sympathisch und ich fand ihren Mut und ihre Entschlossenheit bewundernswert. Sie ist ein komplexer Charakter, mit Abgründen und Schwächen, Ängsten und völlig verqueren Gefühlen. Sie trifft Entscheidungen, die schwer nachzuvollziehen sind, die ich aber aufgrund ihrer Hintergrundgeschichte dennoch glaubhaft fand. Stockholm-Syndrom, posttraumatischer Stress? Sie ist mehr als nur die Summe ihrer Diagnosen. Ich habe sehr gerne über sie gelesen und fand sie authentisch, lebendig und überzeugend.

John Bishop, der Kick in seine Ermittlungen hineinzieht, ist erstmal ein großes Rätsel. Reich, attraktiv, offensichtlich mächtig, aber auch arrogant, bestimmend und immer bereit, mit jeder willigen Frau ins Bett zu steigen. Also genau die Art Mann, die ich in Büchern normalerweise furchtbar finde! Aber auch er hat Abgründe in seiner Vergangenheit und daher seine ganz eigene Motivation, nach vermissten Kindern zu suchen. Im Laufe des Buches zeigt auch er, dass er weitaus komplexer ist, als er auf den ersten Blick zu sein scheint, und er wurde mir tatsächlich doch noch sympathisch!

Ich fand die Geschichte sehr spannend und konnte das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen. Zum einen geht es darum, dass Kick und Bishop den kleinen Adam suchen, der vielleicht von den gleichen Leuten entführt wurde wie damals Kick. Fast noch spannender als die Frage, ob sie Adam rechtzeitig finden werden oder nicht, fand ich allerdings, wie Kick damit umgeht, dass sie durch die Ermittlungen mit ihrer eigenen Vergangenheit konfrontiert wird.

Auch der Schreibstil hat mir gut gefallen und mich direkt in die Geschichte hineingezogen. Sie wird in der dritten Person erzählt, bleibt aber dennoch ganz nahe dran an Kicks Gedanken und Gefühlen.

Fazit:
Organisierter Kindesmissbrauch und Kinderpornographie: ein schreckliches Thema, dass die Autorin als Grundlage für einen ungewöhnlichen Thriller mit einer ungewöhnlichen Heldin nimmt. Die Gewalttaten an Kindern werden dabei niemals explizit beschrieben, was ich sehr gut fand - das wäre mir wie geschmacklose Sensationsgier vorgekommen! Ich fand die Geschichte spannend und originell, die Protagonistin interessant und glaubhaft und auch den Schreibstil wunderbar und packend zu lesen.

Bishop spürt vermisste Kinder auf. Er ist überzeugt, dass nur Kick ihm in seinem aktuellen Fall helfen kann, und er akzeptiert kein Nein als Antwort. Doch um die entführten Kinder zu retten, muss Kick eine Reise in ihre eigene dunkle Vergangenheit wagen – eine Reise, die tödliche Gefahren birgt… 

Meine Meinung

Der Prolog ist wow. Hier zeigt Frau Cain ihre Schreibkunst, denn ich wurde ganz schön an der Nase herumgeführt und einen besseren Einstieg konnte ich nicht haben, denn solche Überraschungsmomente brauche ich bei Thrillern, damit mich das Lesen packen kann.

Der Prolog spielt in der Vergangenheit und man erfährt ganz grob die Umstände von Kick’s Entführung. Es war gut durchdacht und irgendwie ganz anders, als bei bisher gelesener Literatur über das Thema.

Dann gibt es einen Sprung und wir lernen Kick mit 21 Jahren kennen. Ihre Entwicklung ist immens. Von Kindheitstrauma ist zunächst keine Spur. Aus dem kleinen Mädchen hat sich eine Waffen- und Kampfsportnärrin entwickelt. Ich mag solche Frauen, demnach war es für mich ein weiterer Pluspunkt.

Zudem hat sich Kick mit James, dem seine Vergangenheit ebenfalls verfolgt, zusammengetan, um vermisste Kinder aufzuspüren. Mit James als Computer-Freak öffnen sich da einige Türen und auch hier war ich einfach drin. Was die beiden da aufziehen ist toll und so langsam, verspürte ich, dass Kick noch keinen wirklichen Abstand von ihrer Vergangenheit hat und die gezeigte Stärke nur eine Fassade ist.

Cain bringt auch ein Thema mit ein, welches wichtig ist. Wie gehen Mütter nach der Entführung eines Kindes damit um? Kick’s Mutter ist wohl ein Paradebeispiel für einige amerikanische Mütter. Hier spielt der Medienzirkus eine große Rolle und ich konnte nur immer wieder mit dem Kopf schütteln.

Eines Tages steht ein unbekannter Mann in Kick’s Wohnung, Bishop und der hat es mir tatsächlich ein wenig angetan. Er ist stark, fordernd, sexy und verbirgt ein Geheimnis. Er will sich mit Kick zusammen tun, um den Jungen Adam Rice aufzuspüren, der seit geraumer Zeit verschwunden ist. Nach einem interessanten Hin und Her machen sich beide auf den Weg…

Die weitere Story müsst ihr erlesen. Ich kann nur sagen, dass die Autorin hier mehrere interessante Dinge einbringt, Dinge die ein Thrillerleser gern liest, einfach weil man sie nicht so schnell in Verbindung bringen kann und sehnsüchtig auf die Auflösung wartet.

Dazugehören bei Cain zum Beispiel Scabble-Steine, eine Box, die wohl niemand kennenlernen möchte und das Stockholm-Syndrom, welches ich unheimlich interessant finde.

Zum Aufbau des Buch und zum Schreibstil kann ich hier nur sagen Bravo. Kurze Kapitel und einen schönen Lesefluss.

Wie ich bei einem ersten Band fast nie die Bestbewertung gebe, ist es auch hier so.

Im Verlauf der Story hätte gerne noch ein wenig mehr Spannung in Form von Nervenkitzel mit integriert werden können. Ich habe das Buch zwar gern gelesen und auch in einem relativ kurzen Zeitraum, aber irgendwas fehlt mir noch.

Und auch das große Geheimnis um die Person Bishop bzw. das recht offene Ende nagen an mir. Nun muss ich mich wieder so lang gedulden. Gemein, aber macht natürlich Lust auf Band 2.

Mein Fazit

Für mich ein sehr gelungener Auftakt der Kick Lannigan Reihe. Ich war zunächst skeptisch bei dem Thema Kinderpornografie, weil das diese Thematik derzeit doch recht häufig in Büchern wieder zu finden ist, allerdings hat die Autorin das Thema sehr gut umgesetzt und interessant gestaltet. Die Charaktere Kick und Bishop werden toll in die Story integriert und machen Lust auf mehr.
