Hold Me (Cyclone) (Volume 2) - Courtney MilanĀ
Hold Me (Cyclone) (Volume 2) - Courtney Milan

Courtney Milan is a hell of an overachiever. She isn't content to write charming romances in which, as in Austen, the primary barriers to love are the uncontrolled aspects of multifaceted personalities. Milan also strives to remind the reader of how many different kinds of love there are, and that loving thy neighbor is hard, but worthwhile. She is Dickensian in her examination of class, but so much broader in scope. But also fun. They flirt with math. How adorably geeky and STEMy is that?

If they weren't so much fun, I might be tempted to call them uplifting. They are, often, deeply moving, because her characters have sometimes horrible, albeit too believable, backstories. Her happy endings are hard-earned.

My Favorite Contemporary Romance 2016
Beard Science (Winston Brothers Book 3) (Volume 3) - Penny Reid
First Step Forward (The Grand Valley Series) - Liora Blake
The Wall of Winnipeg and Me - Mariana Zapata
Her Naughty Holiday (Men at Work) - Tiffany Reisz
SO RIGHT: A Sugar Baby Novella - Rebekah Weatherspoon
Hold Me (Cyclone) (Volume 2) - Courtney Milan
Bittersweet (True North) (Volume 1) - Sarina Bowen
First Star I See Tonight: A Novel (Chicago Stars) - Susan Elizabeth Phillips

I had a grand year reading Contemporary Romance. Just grand.

These are my top Contemporary Romance reads that were published in 2016.  There is a tie for 10th (though my lists are usually not in any order) as some crazy wonderful writers managed to publish more than one excellent Contemporary Romance this year.

I love it.  But now I am on a budget! Lots of sports romance, nerds, laughter, and sexy here.

Please let me know if you loved any of these books and if I missed your favorite!

1. Beard Science (Winston Brothers, #3) by Penny Reid. Lets be clear, Cletus is odd and Cletus is grand. Cletus wins it all and so does Jennifer. So, funny, So, tender. 5 Stars.

2. First Step Forward (Grand Valley, #1) by Liora Blake Blake is an amazing writer. Read all her stuff.  Grumpy football hero, organic farming heroine. Opposites attract at its best. 5 Stars

3. Her Naughty Holiday (Men at Work, #2) by Tiffany Reisz The heroine gets mad and its glorious. The wit here is enchanting.  Love two adults having a relationship and adulting. 5 Stars

4. Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen I couldn't get enough of farming. Bowen writes amazing characters and the spark between them is devine. This is a great world being built in Vermont with dark and light and gray. The cast of characters is this series is the very best. 5 Stars.

5.  The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata Gah. Zapata is queen of the slow burn. The ruler. I adore it so hard. Friendship develops and passion. So very good. Yeah, more football and a working class heroine. Good stuff. 4 Stars

6. Hold Me (Cyclone, #2) by Courtney Milan I like big brains and I can not lie. Wicked smart hero and heroine. There is a lot of snark in this one but all the little nerdy details make it a winner plus a multiracial cast and sexual diversity as well. 4 Stars.

7. So Right (Sugar Baby, #2) by Rebekah Weatherspoon A great continuation of the romance began in the first book More genius characters and very sexy love with an older man. 4 Stars.

8.Hail Mary by Nicola Rendell  Where is all this football coming from? The cute meet in this one happens when the heroine knocks the hero out in a sparring match. So, good. 4 Stars.

9. First Star I See Tonight (Chicago Stars, #8) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips While the hero is an recently retired football star, the really star here is the private eye heroine. They are both uber grumpy. It is zany fun.

10. So, yeah. All the great books--

Wait for It  by Mariana Zapata

Grin and Beard It (Winston Brothers, #2) by Penny Reid

Steadfast and Keepsake by Sarina Bowen

Hold Me (Cyclone #2) by Courtney Milan Review
Hold Me (Cyclone) (Volume 2) - Courtney Milan

Jay na Thalang is a demanding, driven genius. He doesn’t know how to stop or even slow down. The instant he lays eyes on Maria Lopez, he knows that she is a sexy distraction he can’t afford. He’s done his best to keep her at arm’s length, and he’s succeeded beyond his wildest dreams.

Maria has always been cautious. Now that her once-tiny, apocalypse-centered blog is hitting the mainstream, she’s even more careful about preserving her online anonymity. She hasn’t sent so much as a picture to the commenter she’s interacted with for eighteen months—not even after emails, hour-long chats, and a friendship that is slowly turning into more. Maybe one day, they’ll meet and see what happens.

But unbeknownst to them both, Jay is Maria’s commenter. They’ve already met. They already hate each other. And two determined enemies are about to discover that they’ve been secretly falling in love…

Review

I adore the complexity of the characters, the Shop Around the Corner Theme, the nerd joy, and the shoes.

I don't tend to love enemies to lovers tales and because of the level of animosity between the hero and the heroine at first this element is here. Also, the plot takes a long time getting them together and then they are apart a lot still so I was not happy with the level of couple time, falling in love, and romance I got here.

I loved the first book in this series and snapped Maria's story up as soon as it came out. I wish for a softer look at the cast of characters for the series but enjoyed going deeper into this world.

There has been a great deal of thoughtful discussion on this book and the balance between the leads being themselves and the intersections of their various identities. I felt what was here was good but I wanted more. I wanted the relationship to move beyond where it rested so that the characters could reckon with more of their own intersection. Couples, especially couples as relatively young as there two, spend a great deal of time sharing who they are and who they are becoming and the most vulnerable parts of themselves past and present and future. We get some of that but I am greedy and think the book would have been more richer if this tenderness would have been explored.

Trade Me by Courtney Milan 99 cents! Love this book!
Trade Me (Cyclone) (Volume 1) - Courtney Milan

Tina Chen just wants a degree and a job, so her parents never have to worry about making rent again. She has no time for Blake Reynolds, the sexy billionaire who stands to inherit Cyclone Systems. But when he makes an offhand comment about what it means to be poor, she loses her cool and tells him he couldn't last a month living her life.

To her shock, Blake offers her a trade: She'll get his income, his house, his car. In exchange, he'll work her hours and send money home to her family. No expectations; no future obligations.

But before long, they're trading not just lives, but secrets, kisses, and heated nights together. No expectations might break Tina's heart...but Blake's secrets could ruin her life.

Trade Me is the first book in the Cyclone series. The next book, Hold Me, is availa
