It was a cold December eve, some say the coldest in decades, and a blizzard warning was in effect. It was the Friday before Christmas and most of the other workers of Kennedy and Crane had already left for the Christmas holiday weekend.

Samantha looked at the clock and groaned inwardly. It was after 8 o’clock and her boss was in an extra foul mood even for her.

“Shouldn’t you be getting home to put on that awesome Chanel dress you bought for the big night?” She asked.

Macy spun around enraged, and Samantha sunk back.

Macy’s dark brows knit together and her brown eyes looked nearly black with the size of her pupils. She ran her hands through her short dark hair and then stared at Samantha with disbelief on her face.

“I got a text from Todd an hour ago. He’s gone off to LA with some friends for Christmas!”

Samantha’s mouth fell open. “What, why?” She stopped herself. “I’m sure he has a good reason Macy.”

Macy snorted. “Yeah, good reasons usually don’t come in a text. I’m losing him Sam.”

Macy plopped down in her chair and stared out the large picture window of her sleek office, and tapped her long manicured nails on her desk like a woodpecker.

“Says he’ll call me when he gets back…in a month.”

Samantha’s groaned inwardly. Poor Macy, it looked like she was getting the ultimate big let down. Broken up with at Christmas. No engagement celebration after all.

“Here’s a piece of mail you didn’t get.” Sam offered up happily as she placed it on Macy’s desk.

“Send it back.” Macy said dully without turning.

Samantha continued hopefully. “It’s not the annual Christmas invite from your mother Macy, that one is always in a red envelope. I always send that back. This is something different.”

Samantha looked at the pretty Tiffany blue colored envelope.

“It’s addressed to you personally, not the company.”

Macy cocked her head to the side intrigued.

Sam rushed on eager to bring some sort of happiness to her boss. “Maybe it’s a love letter from Todd with two tickets to Paris for when he gets back?”

Macy let out a big huff and gazed out the window at the oncoming storm. They both knew that wasn’t the case. Todd’s last minute text was just a breakup in disguise.

But if not Todd then who? Macy really didn’t have any close friends that would send her a Christmas card. Anyone that did know her at all, knew she abhorred Christmas. Too much money being spent in the name of sentimentality and tricky marketers as her father always said.

Macy waved her hand without looking back at Samantha as if she were a servant.
“Read it.”
Samantha scanned the letter, then suddenly, caught her breath and brought her hand to her heart.

“Macy.”

Something in Samantha’s tone made Macy spin her chair around.

“What?”

“Its from a friend of your mothers, a Ms. Carol Landers.”

“You have got to be kidding me!” Macy threw her hands up in the air.

Now my mother is having her friends beg me to come home and visit her? How utterly selfish!”

She shook her head in disbelief. “What is it with my mother? She ruins my life and then she stalks me! Can’t she see no matter how many times she begs me to come home for Christmas - I’m not going to Kissing Bridge to see her?”

Samantha swallowed uncomfortably and croaked out, “I’m so sorry Macy. But this letter says that your mother passed away yesterday, and you’re the only relative left to claim her body.”

She looked up sadly and met Macy’s stunned eyes.

“You have to go home to Kissing Bridge.”

A Christmas Tradition of Making Music

Music is an important part of just about everyone’s Christmas, whether it’s Christmas carols at the church Christmas program, a rerun of Bing Crosby singing in ‘White Christmas’, or the incessant Muzak playing at the malls. As a singer and musician, Christmas music is an especially important part of my Christmas. I have been making music for the holidays since I was a teenager playing the organ in a little Baptist church, and it continues to be an important part of my Christmas celebration every year.

I have made Christmas music just about everywhere. In that small church, at the school where I taught for many years, in the televised choir of a large suburban congregation, in the back of a truck on a Christmas caroling hayride, on a barge floating down the San Antonio River with the Boy Scouts, for church senior groups, in the dining rooms and halls of nursing homes. I’ve made Christmas music in every one of those places. My opportunities to make Christmas music grew exponentially when I learned to play the dulcimer and ukulele and joined The San Antonio Riverpickers, a mountain music band that features dulcimers and old-time Appalachian tunes, and Ukulele Ladies and Gents, which plays all kinds of music including lots of island songs. With these two groups, I have expanded my holiday repertoire beyond the usual Christmas carols and radio and movie songs. I also find myself playing in venues that are an adventure in themselves.

Riverpickers does a lot of street festivals around the holidays, most notably Christmas in Comfort and Dickens on Main in Boerne. We mix in a few Christmas numbers but play mostly mountain tunes, as very few carols sound all that good on a dulcimer. Our audience seems to enjoy the old mountain tunes as much as they do the carols. Playing for a street festival can get interesting in terms of weather, however. After all, we are playing outdoors. We’ve played with the sun shining in our eyes on a stage facing a setting sun, and under chilly cloud cover with rain threatening. We’ve played in the hot-this is Texas and it can still be hot in December. We’ve played in the cold. Really cold. Our record cold-weather performance was an hour-long set in Boerne a few years back. The sun had gone down, it was twenty-nine degrees and the wind was blowing. It was so cold the instruments all had to be retuned, not a problem unless you play a hammered dulcimer with forty-plus strings. (My fingers burned for a solid hour afterwards.) We promised ourselves afterwards we’d never again play below forty degrees, but I honestly don’t think it would stop us. Street festivals are just too much fun to pass up.

The ukulele group is just the opposite. We stay inside where it’s nice and warm and play Hawaiian Christmas music, complete with hula dancers and red and green Aloha shirts. And we sing them in Hawaiian! Of course, we do other Christmas songs also. The ukulele group plays many different places, including churches and libraries and a lot of nursing homes. Although we play for someone or something every month, the holidays tend to be our busy season. So far, we have one performance scheduled right before Thanksgiving and four during December. And that’s so far. There may be more.

Making all the performances can get hectic in an already jam-packed season. Occasionally we must skip a party or another event to play and sing. But making music, especially Christmas music, deeply enriches our holiday. I cannot imagine Christmas without it.

“Yeah, it’s easy to love those blue-eyed blonds, isn’t it?” Wade gibed. “Those dark ones, man. They’re a lot harder to love.”

Ike felt his temper spike and tamped it down. “It would be hard to love any child who looks like the man who raped my wife,” he replied softly. “It wouldn’t matter if they were white, black, or purple with stripes down their back.” More was on the tip of his tongue but he bit it back. He already sounded enough like an ass.

Wade gave him a go-to-hell look and glanced to one side. Cassie stood there, her face pale and her expression one of horror. Ike felt himself cringe. She’d heard every word.

He started to say something but clamped his mouth shut. He couldn’t defend a statement like that and he knew it. But it had been the unvarnished truth. Noelle was a visible reminder of Cassie’s violation. He didn’t know how to get around that.

Cassie disappeared into the house. It was time to make his case one more time and then get the hell out of here. Ike nodded to Wade, thanked Angie for her hospitality and followed Cassie inside, where he found her in the kitchen by herself. “You leaving now?” she asked as she transferred leftover vegetable sticks into a plastic bag.

“Not until you agree to come see Granny Mae.”

“Then you better wash your clothes and buy another tube of toothpaste. I’m not going to let you pressure me into a decision that’s not in Noelle’s best interests.”

“Damn it, Cassie, what about Granny Mae? Your grandmother’s dying. The only thing she wants before she goes is to see you and Noelle. Are you really going to deny her dying wish?”

“That’s right. Play the guilt card.” Cassie snapped the bag shut and practically threw it in the refrigerator. “I told you last night. Granny Mae is a woman of the holler. She’s not going to want to see Noelle. And even if she did, what part of ‘Hugh Siler will kill her’ did I not communicate fully to you?” She turned to Ike, her eyes blazing. “I’m not the sweet, gullible girl you knew before. The one who could be persuaded or guilted into doing just about anything you wanted me to. So don’t try that crap with me. No way in hell am I giving you any kind of answer today.

Don’t ask again.”

“All right. All right. Calm down. No answer today. I get that.” He paused. “But I will say it again. Granny Mae will want to see you both. Your daughter will be in no danger from your father. So please, Cassie. Will you at least think about coming? Will you do that much? You could come for a few days, maybe a week after ‘Wizard of Oz’ finishes its run. Please, Cassie? For Granny Mae? Please?”

“I will think about it but no promises.”

“Thank you. I’ll need your contact information and would like you to have mine.”

They exchanged phones and entered the necessary information. “I guess I’ll be going,” he said as she handed him back his phone.

“One more thing.”

“What’s that?”

Cassie hesitated. “Never mind.”

“No, say whatever’s on your mind.”

“Noelle. She’s not responsible for the circumstances of her conception. She’s a beautiful, wonderful child. Everyone who knows her loves her.”

“I’m sure she is and I’m sure they do. I’m not proud of my feelings toward her, Cassie. Just so you know.”

Release Day Review! Midnight Bite by Cynthia Eden!

Today is release day for Cynthia Eden's newest paranormal romance - Midnight Bite & I have a spotlight and 5 Star review for you to enjoy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A kiss on New Year's Eve is supposed to be lucky...but a vampire bite? That's not exactly something a woman dreams of getting. And when Lark Kinsley gets bit, all bets are off. She stakes her date, runs into the night, and tries to put the whole nightmare behind her.
Only she can't.
Because she immediately runs into trouble—trouble in the form of a tall, dark, and deadly sexy vampire prince named Devereaux. He claims that he's there to help her, but she's not buying his story. The guy is no Prince Charming. After all, Prince Charming isn't supposed to come with fangs and an appetite for blood. But Devereaux says that he's been waiting centuries for her. That she is meant to rule with him. Obviously, he's wrong. And possibly insane. She's not meant to be the queen of the vamps. No matter what Devereaux says.
But he's not the only one after her. Paranormal monsters are coming out of the woodwork. And the bite that she got? It's making her feel strange. Hungry. Her self-control is shredding, and Lark knows she's changing. She just doesn't know what she'll become.
The new year won't go out with a bang...it will end with a bite.
Author’s note: Hey paranormal romance fans! MIDNIGHT BITE is a sexy vamp novella—expect danger, expect hot times, and expect naughty language as you ring in the new year. Let’s celebrate with some undead style!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Midnight Bite is the perfect blend in a quick story, it has lots of hot passion, sizzling romance, and edge of your seat danger. The characters are strong and convincing which really pulls readers into their story and this fast paced plot takes over from there and holds them hostage. The romance may be fast paced but it is feisty and hot as the characters struggle with secrets, plots and manipulations while their sizzling attractions and emotions keeps their interactions quite tense. With an intriguing plot, secrets being revealed and surprising twist keeping the characters in turmoil, readers find that they have to read every last page of this thrilling holiday story.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Keren Hughes lives in the UK and is an avid bookworm. She fondly remembers the days where she would lie in her bedroom away from distraction and get lost in the world of make believe. Her first real memory of reading something she fell in love with was The Hobbit. In her teenage years, she became addicted to Point Horror books like RL Stine's The Boyfriend, but she also enjoyed light Summer reads like What Katy Did and What Katy Did Next.

Over the years she has come to realize that she is a bit of an OCD freak about books. They have to be in perfect condition without the slightest bit of damage.
She has been a book reviewer for the last few years and a book hoarder for a LOT longer. You can NEVER have too many books! Her shelves are bulging and overflowing but she always wants "just one more book".

Keren had her first book published by Limitless Publishing in November 2013. It's a YA Paranormal Romance novel called Stolen. Her second book was published with LP in May 2014. This time, an NA Contemporary Romance called Nothing Like The First Time.

She couldn't have been more surprised when NLTFT appeared on the Amazon Best Seller list. That was a dream come true.

Keren is currently working on more NA Contemporary Romances for you to fall in love with.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Holiday Hijinks
Halliday Theater #1
by Katherine Moore
Genre: Cozy Holiday Romance

It’s Christmas, and this year Emily Halliday is trying something new at the struggling revival movie theater she runs for her great-grandmother. After all, how many times can you show It’s a Wonderful Life?

Emily was hoping to make a little profit on “Holiday Hijinks,” her “counter-programming Christmas” event. What she never expected—plot twist—is that an unexpected guest will turn her own life into a romantic comedy.

Holiday Hijinks is the first in a new series of cozy romances set in the small Pacific Northwest town of Silver Birch, Washington. A short read (15K) for a busy time, Holiday Hijinks introduces a whole new cast of characters while bringing back “cameos” from the “Meredith Manor Hotel” books, which are also set in Silver Birch.

If you love movies and food and romance as cozy as flannel jammies, Holiday Hijinks is the Christmas read for you.

#2

The first person I told about my plans for the Halliday Holiday Hijinks, after Becca, was Max Hopkirk.

“You’ll need some guest stars,” Max had said when I ran into him at the Meredith’s “Haunted Hotel” party in October, “to add to the marquee value.”

Max was a semi-retired English actor who lived at Meredith Manor Hotel between engagements. I’d seen him do the one-man show A Christmas Carol at the hotel’s “Christmas Experience” the year before and had fallen completely in love with him even though he was almost forty years older than me and gay.

He’d been totally charming when I’d introduced myself and happily accepted my offer to host a Valentine’s Day screening of the artsy horror movie, Heart of a Devil, a Hammer-style 70s film in which he’d played a vampire count.

Max had brought little foil-wrapped chocolate hearts to distribute at the screening, then had delighted all the attendees with his gossipy stories of what went on behind the scenes during the movie’s filming. I’d finally had to chase everyone out of the theater so I could go to upstairs to bed.

Nella was crazy about Max. She had once gone to a Meredith Hotel Halloween costume party dressed as Gloria Swanson escorted by Max as William Holden and their Sunset Boulevard tag team had won “best costume.”

I think she would have been happy with an “all Max, all the time” schedule of guest appearances. If he hadn’t been so in demand on the Shakespeare festival circuit and unavailable much of the year due to Meredith Manor Hotel events, I think he’d have been happy to oblige.

Nella was delighted to hear Max had agreed to act as Master of Ceremonies for the movie marathon. So was I. It would take a lot of pressure off me.

I told Max that as soon as I had a firm lineup of the films—all the ticket holders got to vote on what we’d be screening—I’d consult with him. Max being Max, though, had phoned his agent and asked her who they had on their roster who might like to take part in a “film festival.” He must have made our little revival house event sound like a Pacific Northwest version of Sundance because the next thing I knew, I got a call from a woman in Los Angeles confirming that “the hottest young director in town” would be happy to lend his exalted presence to the Halliday Holiday Hijinks this Christmas. “And Emily, by ‘hottest,’ I do mean he is hot,” she’d added.

Got it.

“He is pretty hot,” Delia said when I showed her the director’s picture.

“Yeah,” I said, “if you like the broody, Byronic type.”

Delia looked at the picture again. “Who doesn’t?”

And that’s how Zachary “Zac Attack” Orwell ended up the main event at what Becca was calling the “Triple H party.”

Katherine Moore tells readers Delia’s Recommendations on what 5 Books NOT to Buy for Christmas & her Best Pick for the Season!

One of the main characters in Holiday Hijinks is Delia, owner of Silver Birch Books, a used bookstore located next to the Halliday Theater. When shoppers come into the store looking for books to stuff into stockings at Christmas, these are the books she steers them away from and why:

The Littlest Angel by Charles Tazewell

For some reason, Grandmothers always want to buy this one. The “Angel” in the title fools them. Originally written in the 30s as a radio script, Tazewell’s book was first published in 1946. It became an instant inspirational classic and remains in print more than seventy years later. But the book is about a dead kid trying to deal with being an angel. A dead kid.

Marley & Me by John Grogan

Most editions of this book feature a photograph of an adorable yellow lab puppy. (And let’s face it, few dogs are as adorable as yellow labs.) The reader will fall in love with the mischievous animal and then he dies. Marley dies!!! You might as well buy a copy of Old Yeller or Where the Red Fern Grows.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

So you want to find something for your niece who’s begun publishing poetry in obscure literary journals and you want to show your support. (Because most people are telling her she might as well quit school, take any job she can find, and write her poetry without four years of student debt hanging over her head.) This is not the inspirational read she needs.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein was a cartoonist and song writer and story teller whose children’s books were always packaged as if he was the poor man’s Dr. Seuss. This story about a tree who loves a little kid so much it gives everything it has is meant as a sweet tale of love and devotion but the little kid is a selfish brat who never thinks of returning the affection. It’s kind of depressing.

I’ll Always Love You by Hans Wilhelm

This book should be subtitled: Don’t be fooled by the cover, this is a sad story about a kid who loves his dog and the dog dies. The end. It’s like a warm-up for reading Marley & Me. If you’re going to write a book about a dying dog, you should at least give it a title like Cynthia Rylant’s Dog Heaven so you know what you’re getting into.

Delia’s #1 Pick for the Season

If you want a short book that will give you all the Christmas warmth and holiday spirit you can handle, the book to buy is: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. It’s packaged as a kids’ book but adults will appreciate the humor and the hijinks too, as well as the underlying message of inclusion and tolerance.
