Fate
The Mixtape to My Life - Jake Martinez

Justin tends to be inside his head.  Not too many people understand him, and fewer try.  He has a few friends who seem to care.  This year it looks like that may change.  Like everything may change.

Dominic is back and living next door.  The past is catching up to both of them as they realize they may have more in common that they thought.  If he can just tell Justin the truth, and hang on to a friendship that could turn into more, this may be their year.

Characters that move me, well more than one per book is rare.  I found I loved both of this couple as it motivated me to read faster and get to the end.  I was pleased that there was romance, charm, and more among the angst.  So many surprises and a worthwhile read.  Hope we revisit this bunch of friends.  I give this a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Little White Duck
Little White Duck: A Childhood in China (Single Titles) - 'Na Liu', 'Andres Vera Martinez'
I really liked this graphic novel and I have a feeling by looking at the cover of it, many children will not be picking it up. The cover is really not very attractive. Inside this cover, there’s eight, great, short stories about living in China during the mid-1970’s.

I liked how the author gave a first-account of her life in China as a young child. The novel begins with her younger sister getting the opportunity to attend school since only one child per family was allowed. I thought it was interesting the difference between a family name and a given name and how they used them.

There were many things inside this novel that I thought were interesting as I read them. I appreciated how the author included some history into the novel both personal and historical. I feel that the novel includes a great deal of information and I learned quite a bit about China from reading this it. The information presented wasn’t all personal in nature, but included the traditions and routines of the country and her family’s involvement in them.

The graphics were easy to follow, they were at-the-most-part big and the text was easy to read. I thought the colors used in the text, just like the cover, was a bit on the drab side. There were a few pages that were colorful, but most pages carried an olive green or dull yellow tint to them. I can’t say enough about the content of this graphic novel, it was excellent. Pick this graphic novel up for the content and for the illustrations, imagine your own color in it. 4.5 (.5 off for the color issue)

Audiobook Review: The Complete Retrieval Duet By: Aly Martinez (Author), Andi Arndt (Narrator), Maxine Mitchell (Narrator), Jason Carpenter (Narrator)
The Complete Retrieval Duet - Maxine Mitchell,Andi Arndt,Jason Carpenter,Aly Martinez

It starts with the unexpected, dives into the heartbreaking and finds it's way to inspiring. Martinez brings the tale of two mothers, the mistake that connects them and the drama that shadows their heartbreak. The Retrieval Duet is the voice of a mother's love and the sacrifices she'll make to protect that most precious of gifts. Two women learn about themselves and what it means to love unconditionally. Even as the world around them is falling apart. I held my breath, lost my heart and hoped for a resolution. Unforgettably haunting, unconventional story of love.

Audiobook Review: Across the Horizon by: Aly Martinez (Author), Emma Wilder (Narrator), Troy Duran (Narrator)
Across the Horizon - Aly Martinez,Emma Wilder,Troy Duran

My favorite stories are the identifiers. Stories that carry a sense of truth that is relatable and raw. Characters that inspire by example and authors who are not afraid to expose their heart even at the worst moments. Across the Horizon is a compilation of fate, love and heartbreak. Martinez peers into an aching heart and a second chance at a surprising time. Emotion leaps off the page and pulls at your heart. Rita and Tanner are a match made in heartache, but healed by love.

La Madre Goose - Susan Middleton Elya,Juana Martinez-Neal

La Madre Goose by Susan Middleton Elya is a retelling of several famous nursery rhymes. I adore this author because she incorporates Spanish vocabulary words into the text. The book also has a glossary at the front of the book in case the reader does not know a word. The reason I would love to use this book in my classroom is that it would serve a dual purpose. Students who are transitioning from speaking only English to being bilingual will benefit from having a book like this to read. All students in the classroom who are interested in learning about another language will have the option of adding vocabulary words from another language to their vocabulary.
