"Rekindled Lovers" by Falon Gold

My Thoughts....

Interesting good novella about how a couple gets back a lost love after ten years as it was for Tommy and Katara in this 'hot steamy romantic read.'  I found this story a sweet read and definitely one hilarious one too.

"But My Soul is Black" by Terrell Williams

My Synopsis....

I found "but My Soul is Back" one interesting read in that the story was indeed somewhat strange in how it all started.  A white man wanting to be friends with this black man?  Well this is what happened!  Now, one would wonder with Bobby Selinski wanted to be friends with James Guidry [Jimbo] who was a 'African American foreman' who worked for his uncle. What happens has this really becomes a good friendship?  Well it seems all is going well for Bobby until Jimbo introduces him to a Miss Karen Blackwell who just happens to be Jimbo's favorite lady. What will happen when betrayal comes into play.   Now, I don't want to spoil to much but just say this story really take on a intriguing read to see how this author will bring it all out to the reader.

The storyline had some really well developed, portrayed and even believable characters beginning with Bobby, Uncle Fred, Vince, Jimbo, Pete, Karen, Smokey, Miss Thomas and  Carolyn Jenkins to name a few that will definitely keep your attention to the end of the read.

In the end one may wonder a little how this turned out. Was this a way to do someone you called your friend?   Did the right man get the woman? Well, again you will have to read this novel to see just how it comes out.  I will say that ending had me raising my eyebrow and saying really? Oh, I will say it was interesting seeing how Jimbo's grandmother tried to work her magic even after death into her grandsons love life.  Did it work?  It was also interesting to see what Bobby did to try to understand if he and Karen should be together. I will say Karen got on my nerves a little but in the end I was able to understand some of her reasoning.

All and all this was a good read that will keep you turning the pages and I would recommend.

Thank you to Write Now Literary for the early read.  It was definitely a read that will leave you with many provoking thoughts that will leave you to ponder over long after the read.  Was this a real friendship?

My Thoughts....

I liked the ending to this third series featuring Ronan and Ruby as they were truly trying to rebuild their marriage especially Ronan. Naturally there was temptation for Ruby that would have to be worked out from all of the attention she was getting from Daryl.  But I will say that guy Daryl had some nerve in going in for what he wanted which put Ruby front and center in finally letting go and really getting who she wanted.

As the story continued on I was caused to wonder about another character and that was Mark and his assistant. I really didn't like how that was left with the reader to wonder long and hard about that situation. Did his wife Serenity really have a reason to wonder about the assistant. YES!  Oh well, maybe that's for another story along with Emerald and Shauntay also getting their stories told.

I will say this was a well written story of a true love bond between Ronan and Ruby.  So happy to see them finally getting their HEA.

It Ain't So Awful Falafel
It Ain't So Awful, Falafel - Firoozeh Dumas

To all the kids who don't belong, for whatever reason.

This one's for you.

- Dedication

My dad says that the dogs and cats in America are luckier than most people in the world.

- page 34

My dad always says that kindness is our religion and if we treat everybody the way we would like to be treated, the world would be a better place.

- page 40

... only bookworms get excited over other bookworms

- page 69

"Who would ever have thought that a person could be so powerful, then so completely powerless, all in the same lifetime?"

- page 219 (referring to the downfall of the shah)

... even though we belong to three different religions. We are alike in so many more ways than we are different.

- page 299

It was only when I stopped pretending to be someone else that I found my real friends.

- page 360

This was a good read. Zomorod (who changes her name to Cindy) is from Iran. Her father is an engineer who works with American companies building oil refineries in Iran, so they moved back and forth a couple of times.  Now she is starting junior high (which nowadays is called middle school) and doesn't know anyone. She wants to fit in, but she focuses on how different she is from all the other kids. The first friend she makes (in the summer before school) decides she doesn't want to be friends when school starts. Poor "Cindy" is lost and worried and tired of having to explain to everyone where Iran is and how to pronounce her last name.

Cindy finds friends and seems to be settling in and basically happy. Then Iran has a revolution, the shah is kicked out of the country, and Ayatollah Khomeini takes over. On November 4, 1979, Iranian students, angry that President Carter allowed the shah to come to the United States, take a group of Americans hostage. This changes Cindy's family's life and her father loses his job.

I was in junior high during the Iran Hostage Crisis. I remember feeling vaguely angry at the hostage takers and worried about the hostages. My mom wasn't huge on watching the news with us or anything, but I knew what was happening (at least generally).

It was interesting reading this story told from the point of view of an Iranian girl in America at the time. It was so hard for Cindy's family, and many Americans were so hostile towards Iranians, even though those living in America weren't responsible for the situation and didn't necessarily approve of it. Cindy and her parents were so appalled that a religious leader could be responsible for such behavior. But that didn't save them from hate and discrimination.

This is a nominee for the Florida Sunshine State award grades 3-5. I really liked the book and will highly recommend it to our students when school starts.
