The Devils Who Would be King (Royal Pains #4) by Nina Mason 4/5 stars
The Devils Who Would Be King (Royal Pains) (Volume 4) - Nina Mason

Last one in the Royal Pain series and they must be read in order. It started a bit slow but it sure ended with a BANG!

Our hero Robert is away on an assignment by the King on England, missing his lovely wife like the devil and risking his life for King and country. Maggie, as the dutiful wife she is, stays behind dreading the day she may receive news that Robert is never coming back.

Ok, so I have to say I had loved this series because although it was high in eroticism it also stayed on the path of true romance when it came to Robert and Maggie. Those two had a relationship very different from anything I had ever read before. They were possessive and protective of each other but at the same time they let each other be and explore their own romantic, sexual, and whatever needs. That still rings true in this book however I felt that while Robert was putting his life on the line, Maggie was too content living the court life and in a way forgetting about Robert. Later, the story takes a turn for the better, IMO and it switched back to what I had always loved about this series. It had scandal, duplicity, espionage, power-hungry nobles, and of course a couple that was willing to face everything as long as they were together. In the end, everything was tied up perfectly in a way that only this author could have achieved.

I wouldn’t recommend it for those that like clean, sweet romances but I dare say it is for those that like erotic stories with historical accuracy.

*** I received this book from the author at no cost to me and I volunteered to read it; this is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.***

Here’s an excerpt from The Devils Who Would Be King:

When Maggie returned to the bedchamber, she found Robert waiting just inside the door. Before she could say aught to him, he captured her mouth with such passion she fell back against the jamb, needing its support as she reeled under a dizzying rush of desire.

It felt wonderful. Glorious. Better than anything else in the world. She ran her hands slowly up into his hair, over his stubbled jaw, across his hard shoulders, and along his strong arms. Yes, he smelled ripe, but his stink was pure raw male animal musk. She found it far more arousing than offensive. Moving her hands around to his back, she pulled his body firmly against hers, feeling all over again how much she had missed him.

Playing house with Gemma had been all well and good, but her friend was not Robert. No one was, or could ever take his place in her heart or in her bed. Suddenly ashamed of her behavior, she broke from the kiss.

Flushed and short of breath, she said, “Forgive me.”

“For what?” he asked, eyebrows drawing together.

“You were jealous when I went to bed with Juliette. I should have guessed how you would feel about Gemma, whatever you might have claimed to the contrary.”

A strange, unreadable look crossed his face before he stepped away from her and averted his gaze. “How funny that you should bring up Juliette, for I encountered her in my travels.”

“Juliette?” Maggie frowned and furrowed her brow, unsure she’d heard him correctly. “Was she not hanged?”
“No.” When he returned his gaze to hers, she was sure she saw guilt there. “King Louis bribed the judge to release her.”

“King Louis?” she asked, growing uneasy. “Why would he pay to free a Huguenot?”

“Because she is not a Huguenot,” he told her with growing fervor. “She is Romish, like us, and has been working in secret for her king and country. I ran into her in Orkney, awaiting the rebel ships. We joined Argyle’s forces together, posing as man and wife to protect our covers.”

“Man and wife?” she repeated, shocked again. “Did you..?”

“God, no!” He laughed, though nervously. “I was as faithful as the day is long—not that it was easy, given the sleeping arrangements.”

Though relieved he had not cheated on her, Maggie could not let such an inflammatory aside go unremarked upon. “Whatever do you mean by that?”

Before he could answer, someone knocked on the door. Presuming it was the servants with the hot water, Maggie pulled out of Robert’s embrace and went to let them in. After directing them to the bath closet, she went to check on Gemma and wee Jamie. Both, to her delight, were sound asleep. With any luck, they would not stir until morning, giving her hours yet to celebrate her husband’s homecoming.

Returning to the bath closet, she watched the maids fill the tub, offering instructions when necessary. When all was prepared to her satisfaction, she sent them away before returning to Robert’s bedchamber, where she found him seated upon the needlepoint settee in the window alcove, removing his boots and stockings. As he reached around to unfasten his cravat, he looked up to find her watching him.

“Shall I remove the rest?” The wolfish grin he gave her set her blood afire. “Or would you prefer to do the honors?”

“Let me,” she said, excited by the idea of peeling off his clothing, layer by layer. Doing so would afford her the chance to discover his body anew.

He got to his feet and stalked toward her like a predatory animal. When he was only inches away, he spread his arms wide and laughed. “I’m all yours.”

She started with his waistcoat, working the buttons out of their holes in silence. As much as she wanted to inquire further about Juliette and their sleeping arrangements, she wanted him naked even more.

When the waistcoat was off, she tugged his shirttail free of his breeches. Sliding her hands inside his shirt, she relished the feel of his flat belly and muscular chest. Locating his nipples, she gently pinched them between her thumb and forefinger.

Groaning with pleasure, he shut his eyes.

She pressed a kiss to his stubbled chin before unbuttoning the ruffled cuffs on his sleeves. When they were open, he lifted his arms so she could pull the shirt off over his head. Trembling at the sight of his naked chest, she kissed and licked each of his nipples to hardness before moving to his breeches. As she untied the ribbon closures, she did everything in her power to tempt and arouse him. When his breeches fell, she wrapped her hand around his c**k.

“Oh, Rosebud, my sweet seductress,” he breathlessly whispered. “You certainly know how to drive me wild with desire.”

She gave his erection a few ardent strokes before letting go. Yes, she knew how to inflame his passions, but she also knew when to back off to prolong the seduction.

He stepped out of his puddled breeches and kicked them aside before gripping her shoulders. “Now, it is my turn to undress you,” he said with a devilish grin. “For I should like you as naked as a nymph whilst you give me my bath.”

My review : The Devil's Masquerade (Royal Pains #3)
The Devil's Masquerade - Nina Mason

This is the third book in the series and is not a stand alone, thus must be read in order to be fully enjoyed. This story picks up a few years after we last see them and now our Duke and Duchess are joined by a son while trying to adapt to their new life in court. I wouldn’t call this an erotica, but more like an erotic historical with a smidge of romance because after all, it’s about a married couple that want nothing more in life than make each other happy; to make the other content and pleased in any way possible to avoid even the smallest likelihood of losing one another. Although admittedly group sex is not my thing, I can see why the author chose to go down that path with this story.

What I love most about our main characters, Robert and Maggie, is the way they are growing as a couple. The way I see it there is never a true cause for miscommunication or misjudgments because they tell each other everything and if there is, they at least try to remedy their faults as soon as they can to avoid any further injury.

I also love the history lessons. Every time I pick up a book in the series, I get transported to that time and place. So detailed and so smooth with the characterizations and settings that I have no trouble being transported to the England of the time, even if have no prior knowledge to any of it.

Now, let’s talk a bit about Maggie.

It seems to me that after 5 long years she still has a little trouble controlling her alter-ego. Which makes me wonder, did they really never have a chance to experience with her further, even when they were trying to do the deed? ever? Hmm… Also, it’s been more than five years and yet she is still unable to reconcile her religious beliefs with her sexual appetites and her need to satisfy her husband. It may have been because the couple was estranged for a while but it feels to me that Maggie should have been more at peace with the choices she’d made.

Perhaps I’m going into too much depth into Maggie’s character (but only because I like her too much to suffer any deficiencies LOL) and I should just let her be.

So, to finalize, it was a great continuation to the series and will definitely read the next one. I mean, I’m no expert when it comes to erotic reads, but this is a series that’s got me hooked me from the start and I think it’s a well-written and compelling story that should not go unnoticed. 4 Stars.

My Review: The Duke's Bedeviled Bride by Nina Mason.
The Duke's Bedeviled Bride (Royal Pains Book 2) - Nina Mason

Dazzling! Sultry and equally romantic tale that continues the story of Maggie Armstrong, and her beloved Robert, Duke of Dunwoody, as they try to adapt to each other’s own concept of marriage and love.
Maggie is still somewhat hurt from what transpired during their visit to the King and is not sure their marriage is what she wants it to be. She loves her husband but feels his fetishes may come in between their love and marriage. On the other hand, Robert wants nothing more than to make it up to Maggie for his transgressions and although he tries very hard, it seems that nothing he does will ever be enough for her (not that I blame Maggie). However, and because he’s very well aware of his particular needs, he also thinks she’s too good for him and questions if she in fact may regret marrying him at all.
To me, this story was not only clearly well-researched and amazingly well-written but it’s also a story about a couple trying to find that middle ground that will make them both happy. Yes, it’s an erotic tale with scorching sex scenes but most of it happens between a wife and a husband in love. The rest take place as part of the story and is congruent with the context and although I much rather not think how barbaric and vicious people tended to be, a story like this one goes to show it DID happen! Admittedly, there is one scene where Maggie feels compelled to make Robert pay for his “unfaithfulness” while at court and asks him to watch her while she completes her plan, but her heart outweighs her need for retribution and leaves before the deed is completed. I’m not excusing what she did but more than anything it sounded to me as if she was upset beyond thinking logically. There is also a moment when they were apart from each other and he might have succumbed to the charms of another yet he never stopped thinking about Maggie, even through hazed memories. So, yes, it very much is an erotic story that will enlighten the reader in more ways than any history lesson learned in school, but it will also keep you enthralled from beginning to end, and will leave you wanting, if not panting for more.
