Twists, turns, exotic locations and philosophical insights. Unmissable.
Two Rivers, One Stream (Karma's Children #2) - John Dolan

I am a big fan of John Dolan’s writing and enjoyed the first book in his new trilogy, Karma’s Children, so much that I started to read the second book straight away. Unfortunately I’ll have to wait a bit for the conclusion… Because yes, it’s another great book.

In contrast to Restless Earth (you can check my review here), this book is less complex in structure and reminded me more of the previous series, Time, Blood and Karma, although it would be wrong to state that any of the books by this author are “simple” or “straightforward”. He has built a universe of characters, locations, and events that interconnect in ways that bring to mind a spider web. It is beautiful, complex, and depending on your location you might, or might not, be able to see how the whole structure works. But, back to the structure. Here, the story is told mostly in chronological order (sometimes the characters might recall things from their past, but the actual events in the main story are told in what appears to be the logical order), by two main characters. We have the first-person present tense narration by our hero, David Braddock (well, hero/antihero), and here the narration is much more in tune with previous books, bringing back his wit, his observations, his quotes, but also, his anxiety and his lack of insight at times. (He seems to have taken a page out of my notebook, though, and he shows some evidence of trying to grow up at the beginning of the story). I was pleased to hear from him from his own mouth, as such, even if I must confess that the previous book made me keep my eyes more closely trained on him and question his reasoning and his motives even more than usual.

The other main character is Ross Gallagher, a newcomer to the story, and a professional baddie at that. His story is told in the third person but from his point of view, so we get to “understand”, if that is possible, how his mind works. He is matter of fact, and seems distanced from himself (yes, as the narration notes, he disassociates from his behaviour), but despite his professionalism, there is evidence that he is slowly unravelling. We learn about his past history, and it is not long before we discover that fate and karma are at work again, ready to prove that the world can turn up to be much smaller than we think. The author does not write one-dimensional characters, and this is not just an evil character you’ll love to hate. I wouldn’t say I liked him and yet…

It’s a bit difficult to talk about this book in detail without risking giving away any spoilers. This time, as the description hints at, things get pretty personal for Braddock, and despite the support by the many women in his life (I’ve become a huge fan of Da, and I’m pleased Braddock is giving her more of a free rein) and their mature attitude, he is in turmoil. And, unfortunately, things only get worse. There is a twist at the end (it didn’t surprise me, but I won’t say anything else), and I wonder if some readers might class the ending as a cliff-hanger. In my opinion, we get answers to most of the questions posed in the book, thanks to the two points of view employed and to the ending. Having said that, this is a trilogy, and we are left desperate to know how it will all conclude. And that is as should be.

Fans of Dolan’s novels will enjoy the quality of his writing, the philosophical insights (that we might share in or not), the many quotes (Macbeth plays a big part, although references to rivers and the sea brought to mind Garcilaso de la Vega for me), the varied and complex characters, the mystery/thriller parts of the story (I had an inkling that all was not well, but I didn’t quite work out all the details), the contrasting settings (from Thailand, to London, to Marbella, to Bali, beautifully described), and the ending, which opens up more questions and promises a final book where everything will come to an explosive end.

I would not recommend readers who’ve never read any of the author’s books to start here. At the very least, I’d advise anybody who wants to get a full sense of the story to read the previous book in the trilogy. And, if you have time, start right at the beginning, reading book one in the Time, Blood and Karma series, Everyone Burns. You’ll thank me later.

A must-read for lovers of intrigue, complex characters, exotic settings, philosophical insights and reflections, excellent writing, and stories with red herrings and twists and turns. I can’t wait for the last book!

Book Review for Collared by the Badman by Hayley Faiman

Title: Collared by the Badman
Series: Russian Bratva Series
Author: Hayley Faiman
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: September 24, 2018 Cover Design: Cassy Roop @ Pink Ink Designs
Reviewed by: Angels With Attitude Book Reviews

Sergei Orlov has lived a life of dark corruption. Denying himself any bit of normalcy and happiness as a way to protect his family—of blood or Bratva. He’s seen as a savior to his men, living in darkness behind closed doors.

Raisa was a girl sold into a life of sexual servitude. Memories of her life before—forgotten. She aspires to be cherished by a man who will forever keep her as his own, never to be sold, abused, or traded again.

A favor asked, turns into something else, something unquestionably beautiful. Sergei cannot deny that Raisa stirs something inside of him. Something that he has never felt before.

One fractured savior. One shattered soul. When the two collide, their lives take on new meaning.

I am to start me review off a little bit differently than I normally do but, after reading this story I was so emotional hyped up and my emotions all over the place that I posted in Hayley's fb group just to tell her how much I loved the story before writing this review here it is ....

Hayley Faiman its no secret how much I love your books but,I have to say Collared by the Badman floored me.I am still reeling from it.I have so many emotions going on inside of me that I can't even put them into words but, out of all the books I have read this story affected me emotionally more than any others that you have written and I think its your best yet.No other book other than my favorite book of all time Outlander by Diana Gabaldon has effected me this way so and that is saying something just what an awesome writer you are.Awesome Awesome Job.I loved it as it was tragic, dark, terrifying, emotional, heart wrenching and so much more....Glued to the pages to the very end! We love you!

After digressing this story several hours later I just read and so many hours later I am still reeling from this story.I have to say that if a author is still able to capture your intention and has you still thinking of the story hours later it truly was beautifully written.

I really don't no where to start and tell you how much I loved the story from beginning to end.I was captivated from the onset of Sergi taking Raisa home.I am going to be honest and say that I was having doubts that I was going to make it to the end of the story as the story had me edgy and a bit shaky because the content was so dark and heart wrenching but, when Sergi took it upon himself to avenge a women who he new so little about I was all in.

After talking to Hayley after my response she told me that she never really planned ever to write this story and that would have been an absolute shame and we are so glad she did as it was Fantastic!!!!!

I always pick a favorite character in a story but, this time around its impossible to do as Sergi's small circle of close friends and family made me love them all the more as their loyalty to him was so touching.I loved how from the beginning of Raisa entering all their lives they new she would be his one and only not only that but, how all of them became so protective of her . "It was so touching, It made me tear up more than once."

Raisa was just an unbelievably strong women and I myself would have never been able to survive the horrors she experience in her life.My heart broke for her and remained broken the entire story.

Sergi OMG !
"He was hotter that hot in this story!"I experienced his pain as well what a lonely life for him never being able to love anyone with putting them in danger and never being able to show even a hint of emotion at all always having to play the role of a monster just to survive. Sergi was no saint that is for sure but, It was really nice to see that he had a heart and that he was able to feel something even if he has have to mask those feelings and keep those feelings to himself.I loved his struggle as he worked his way through what he was feeling for Raisa and what she really meant to him.

As the story progressed the story got hotter and hotter. Omg ! the sex scenes super hot. This story is not for the faint of heart as it is very dark and unless you are enmeshed in a lifestyle such Sergi and Raisa you would truly never really understand it but,the depth of emotions it causes the person reading it to feel and that those feelings are all over place and sometimes overwhelming even. I personally could never imagine anyone freely living a lifestyle of and owner/slave relationship but, after reading Raisa's story there would be no other way for her to function without this kind of a relationship and without it she would never truly survive any other way.I am happy though through all the darkness, heartbreak, horror's she endured that she was able for once in her life experience some sort of happiness and once she had a glimpse of it not wanting to take it to heart as she was constantly waiting for it to be riped a way at and minute.Just heartbreaking you just want the tears to fall with her as she sits there and sheds them to rid the pain in of all that's in her heart....

Tissues ! Tissues ! Tissues!

A Compelling story not to be missed!

A recommended read to all!

MY REVIEW

Major Crimes Detective Madison Knight has mixed emotions about Jimmy Bates murder. Maybe it was Karma that he’s lying in his bed, brutally murdered. After all, he was responsible for her grandfather’s death.

Could the hitman that had almost killed Madison be back to finish the job? Could the Russian Mafia be tying up loose ends? Can she, will she, be able to move past the personal and be a professional? Her friends, coworkers, and family are concerned, but they do not stand in her way.

She lives with the head of the Stiles Police Department Swat Team, Toby Sovereign. I am hoping she doesn’t do something foolish, like keeping secrets from him and putting herself and those closest to her in danger.

I love Toby. Thank goodness he has the patience to put up with her stubbornness. Madison has has severe commitment issues. Lies by omission are still lies. I would find it hard to trust her, as does Toby, but he loves her dearly and hopes she will come around, me too.

Sometimes I wonder if she has a death wish because she can be so reckless and careless. I think that strong characters do have a wish to keep those they love from being a victim or put in the path of a bullet, and feel they are able to handle things themselves. And I do love my strong women, so who knows, maybe I would do the same thing if I wasn’t more of the spectator type.

Power Struggle is a complicated mystery. As the deaths pile up, the mystery and danger grows. Lives are at stake and we know Bulldog Madison will put it all on the line. Maddie, if I am ever in trouble, I’ll be calling on you. Even when she’s on the verge of losing her self control and sanity, there is that special something that clicks in her mind, refusing to give up as the pieces fall into place.

Action, suspense, not so much romance, but lots of love from Troy, Terry, her partner, coworkers, family and friends. They all play an important part in her life and I feel like they are my friends too.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Power Struggle by Carolyn Arnold.

EVGENI: MY RUSSIAN SAVIOR by J. A. Fielding
Evgeni, My Russian Savior: A BWWM Billionaire Mafia Romance - BWWM Club,J A Fielding
Athena is a party planner who catches the eye of Evgeni Markovic, a Russian ex-gangster who is trying to go legit. I like this couple. They are strong, independent people who respect each other's opinions and pasts. Both have scars from the past but they work through them. They are willing to listen to one another even when Athena is upset and believes Evgeni went back to his past. Their connection is hot. I hate to leave this couple.

5* Book Review of Reap by Tillie Cole
Reap: A Scarred Souls Novel - Tillie Cole

Reap by Tillie Cole
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’d had Raze on my Kindle for almost twelve months, but when Reap was offered for review, well I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to read the first two in the series and OMG what an addictive and intriguing series. It’s totally different from anything I’ve ever read. Ms Cole is a fabulous writer and pulled me into the world of the Russian mafia and the scarred souls within. After reading the first, I couldn’t help but pick up the second as soon as I’d finished. This is a definite favourite and I cannot wait for the next one, Ravage that is due out in August this year.

The Georgians, the Russians and the Italians are at war. The Russians have claim over New York and the Georgian’s plan on bringing the Volkov’s down. They’ve created a drug that has a 100% success rate with total obedience with their fighters/slaves. It not only keeps them hyped, but puts a block around their memories, their past; 221 is the prime example of full obedience.

Luka Tolstoi is the Russian mafia prince and is struggling with life. With the season just beginning in the Dungeon, the cage fights are like a drug to him, but Luka can only watch. He only has one focus and that’s on seeking vengeance for his friend 362, as promised. The guilt and nightmares are getting worse, but with his girl by his side, Kisa Volkova, he is just barely coping.

Now, Talia Tolstaia is Luka’s sister. Her duty is recruiting sponsors for the Dungeon and finding the best fighters. She’s never failed, season after season. Beginning to burn out, Talia has planned a vacation away from everything and everyone. But when she’s trying to relax at the Tolstoi country estate, her vacation turns into a nightmare and then into an erotic dream.

A HUGE naked, unconscious man is being held in her basement. Talia’s curiosity gets the better of her and she ventures into the basement. He’s covered in strange marking and scars and when she learns who he truly is, well she’s horrified. 221 is her family’s worst enemy and he’s the only man Talia think about.

Talia began watching 221 via security cameras. She became obsessed and after two weeks of being weaned off the drugs, he stopped moving, breathing. She ventured down to the basement to check on him and that was the day everything changed.

Talia has gone against everything she had ever been told about their sworn enemy, but she is drawn to 221 and their connection cannot be denied. Will they be able to overcome their ancestors war? Will everyone accept their obvious bond? Will they be able to prove that 221 isn’t the devil incarnate they all believe he is?

Reap is one emotional rollercoaster. Talia and Luka both discover their strength and show where their loyalties lie. Finding their soulmate is a sure-fire way to find happiness, but it could also cause a rift between families and perhaps even a war. This is one highly recommended dark romance for all that are chasing something different and want to experience all emotions within one book.
