Nicolas Bouvier wyruszył wraz z przyjacielem w latach '50 XX wieku drogą lądową do Indii. Jako środek transportu służył im mały fiacik, jako budżet – własne zarobki w drodze. Jako miarę czasu używali miesięcy a świadectwo przeżyć dawała maszyna do pisania autora. Zawarte w książce opisanie podróży wiodącej przez Bałkany i Turcję po Afganistan, jest jedną z najpiękniejszych relacji podróżniczych, jakie zdarzyło mi się przeczytać. Jadąc niespiesznie przez Europę i Azję oraz posługując się uniwersalnym językiem muzyki (a także mniej uniwersalnym francuskim), autorowi udało się zbliżyć do ideału podróży, w której miesza się przedmiot i podmiot. podróż staje się celem samym w sobie i nie jest do końca pewne, czy dobiegnie ona do przewidzianego końca. Bo koniec może nastąpić gdziekolwiek, bo wyznaczona meta nie ma specjalnego znaczenia. W tą podróżniczą sielankę wkradają się raz po raz spore niebezpieczeństwa, a to związane z finansami, a to ze zdrowiem. Ma miejsce także brutalne zderzenie z „realnym” życiem toczącym się poza trasą. Jak sobie z tym radzą bohaterowie? Jak reagują na to napotkani w drodze ludzie? O tym wszystkim równie niespiesznie warto przeczytać w książce.

Gwiazdy spadały na podwórze, ale daremnie się głowiłem: nie mogłem sobie życzyć nic oprócz tego, co miałem.

„Oswajanie świata” jest książką drogi i jakoś w jej opisach utkwiło mi określenie, że chodzi o podróż do Indii. Nie jest kryminałem, więc nie zdradzę specjalnej tajemnicy i napiszę jasno, że tylko jedno mnie srodze zawiodło w całej książce – finał. To miała być podróż do Indii! Spodziewałem się, że kiedyś autor tam dotrze!! I coś o tym kraju napisze!!! Gdzie są dalsze części? Ale i tak ją gorąco polecam a sam jeszcze po nią sięgnę zapewne nie raz.

Zaskoczyło mnie jedno w książce: jak to możliwe, że jakieś lokalne amerykańskie gazety (jak 'San Francisco Chronicle' - ponad 200 tys. egz. nakładu, czy 'Boston Globe' - dwa razy tyle) mają ambicje i stać je na to, by wysyłać reportera na pierwszą linię wojny na drugim końcu świata? Pytałem też sam siebie: co robi na wojnie kobieta, w dodatku Amerykanka, ex-Rosjanka pochodzenia żydowskiego, matka małym dzieciom, bez znajomości jakiegokolwiek przydatnego języka i w krajach muzułmańskich jak Irak, Afganistan, Etiopia czy Palestyna (wyjątkiem jest tu rosyjskojęzyczna Czeczenia), w których żaden mężczyzna kobiet nie bierze na serio? A jednak, mimo iż porusza się po peryferiach wydarzeń, jej świadectwo jest interesujące i głęboko ludzkie. Pozwala nam spojrzeć na wojnę "od kuchni" - od strony kobiet i dzieci, które są najbardziej zagrożone w rejonach walk, a które boją się o swych bliskich i...gotują. Do każdego reportażu (każdy z innego miejsca i czasu, a jest ich tu 12) dostajemy więc przepisy na miejscowe przysmaki, bo jak pisze autorka, wszystkie jej pobyty w strefie wojny prowadziły do ludzi poprzez dzielenie się jedzeniem - stół stwarzał wspólnotę z ludzi, którzy byli sobie jeszcze przed chwilą obcy. To też historia towarzyszących jej osób: kierowców, tłumaczy i "ochroniarzy", którzy czytelnikowi stają się bliżsi. Najbliższe stały się dla mnie jej tłumaczki z Iraku - Sana' i Szadha, szyitka i sunnitka, obie wykształcone historyczki sztuki, obecnie pewnie w obozach dla uchodźców w Turcji albo gdzieś na drogach do Europy...Jedną z nich zawrócono do Bagdadu już z Czech. Szkoda, że mimo opowiedzenia ich historii, nadal są anonimowe i bez pomocy. Inaczej, niż rodziny muzyków z Iraku i Syrii, grający obecnie z Jordi Savallem w jego zespole Hesperion XXI, których rodziny są już bezpieczne w Hiszpanii i Francji.

W reportażu o Czeczenii ("Barszcz na wojnie") jej sympatia, mimo iż była obywatelką ZSRR, nie leży wcale po stronie rządu, który chcąc zabić (tak, tylko zabić - strzałem w głowę...) 40 czeczeńskich terrorystów, z których połowę stanowiły kobiety, okupujących teatr na Dubrowce, bez skrupułów śmiertelnie zatruwa gazem ok. 150 zakładników, nie podając nawet lekarzom ratującym ofiary rodzaju użytej trucizny. A niewykluczone, iż wysadzenie 4 bloków mieszkalnych w Moskwie, gdzie zginęło jeszcze więcej ludzi, było akcją służb specjalnych, służącą stworzeniu casus belli do ataku na Czeczenię i wyniesieniu Putina do władzy - dochodzenia w tych sprawach zostały utajnione... Obywatele ZSRR takie traumy nauczyli się "zajadać" tłustymi potrawami i zapijać wódką, by zapomnieć, że są tylko mięsem armatnim autorytarnej polityki.

Na koniec, w epilogu, autorka odwołuje się do Kapuścińskiego, który z konfliktu w Górskim Karabachu pisał, iż trudna rozmowa wymaga suto zastawionego stołu, zaś pusty stół ją mrozi. Badkhen to rozszerza: "W skrajnych sytuacjach propozycja podzielenie się chlebem oznacza więcej niż tylko zaproszenie do usłyszenia czyjejś historii. To szansa aby połączyć dwa życia: tego człowieka i twoje.
Wszyscy ludzie opisani w tej książce są dla mnie rodziną" (s.314). Ale to tak łatwo się pisze, gdy z członkami takiej rodziny nie utrzymuje się żadnego kontaktu...Wszystkie użyte w książce nazwiska - reporterów i niektórych bohaterów - są autentyczne.

I wniosek natury ogólnej: wojna ani rewolucja nigdy nie prowadzą do lepszego jutra. Przykładów, świetnie udokumentowanych, są setki a może tysiące. Jak to możliwe, że ludzie nie są w stanie tego zrozumieć?

Są podróże trudne do objęcia wyobraźnią, ale możliwe do zrealizowania. Są podróże zrealizowane, ale wciąż trudne do objęcia wyobraźnią. Zapewne taką trasą jest lądowa droga do Indii z Europy. A jeszcze na rowerze! Takiej to trasie poświęcona jest książka „Rowerem w stronę Indii. Wśród dobrych ludzi.”, której autorem jest Robert Maciąg.

Na szczęście jest to jednak coś więcej niż zwykłe sprawozdanie, na nieszczęście jest tu samego sprawozdania trochę za mało. Sądzę, że ci, którzy szukają poradnika przy planowaniu takiej podróży trochę się zawiodą, a z drugiej strony głębsze refleksje autora nadają książce szerszego wymiaru niż tylko prostej relacji z przejazdu. Bardzo cieszą śliczne fotografie ilustrujące poszczególne etapy podróży, szkoda jednak, że nie wszystkie są podpisane czy opisane. Moim zdaniem takie opisy bardzo by pomogły lepiej je wpisać w treść narracji. No i w końcu książka jest ładnie wydana, na błyszczącym papierze, ale z kolei brak spisu treści. Na wszelki wypadek nie będę się też wypowiadał o projekcie okładki, bo jeszcze jakieś wydawnictwo może być urażone (taki żarcik z głośnej i przedziwnej reakcji zupełnie innego wydawnictwa na umiarkowanie entuzjastyczną recenzję blogerki).

„W Dardżylingu przywitały nas niskie chmury i... osiem stopni Celsjusza.

Położony na 2128 metrów n.p.m. Dardżyling oferował Brytyjczykom ucieczkę przed upałami. Każdy, kto tylko mógł, spędzał tu lato i miasto powoli rozbudowywało się na stokach wzgórz. Dzięki temu niemal wszędzie jest, dosłownie, pod górkę.”

Jak więc widać z powyższego – książka wzbudza we mnie trochę sprzecznych uczuć. Jest jednak pewne, jestem pełen uznania dla odbytej podróży. Ale nie tylko dla samej podróży, czytałem książkę niemal jednym tchem. Za każdym razem radowały mnie przemyślenia, uwagi i oceny autora a w szczególności niezwykle pozytywne podejście do spotykanych ludzi i (zazwyczaj) takież uczucia mijanych na trasie osób w stosunku do dwójki rowerzystów. Czekałem aż oboje dojadą do Indii, bo ciekaw byłem jak zostanie przedstawiona trudna do zdzierżenia namolność wielu naganiaczy czy nawet całkiem zwyczajnych Indusów, w stosunku do turystów. A do tego jeszcze tak niezwykłych, bo na rowerach. Nie zawiodłem się, bo w książce opisano to z wielkim taktem i ciepłym spojrzeniem przez - może tylko trochę zbyt - różowe okulary. A może właśnie tak trzeba? Bo przecież... „Indie wyciągają z ciebie wszystko co najmocniejsze”.
