Go faster.

Go faster.

Go. Sodding. Faster.

Valor tapped his foot impatiently, trying to ignore the periodic glares from the helicopter pilot. “Can this go any faster?”

Silence.

That’s a no, then?

The second Valor stepped off the helicopter, he reached for his mobile. He tried Bishan first, hoping against all the odds his beloved Bish would be conscious and able to pick up. No answer. Right.

He tried Detective Inspector Spurling next with no luck. He called Hugh, but his old schoolmate didn’t answer either. No news might be good news. I hope.

A friendly police officer met him once he’d gotten away from the helicopter and refused to give him any information while driving him through Windermere. Valor sat, frozen, unable to get his hands to stop shaking. Visions of Bishan covered in dust and blood kept flashing in front of his eyes.

All day an uneasy sensation had gnawed at his stomach. He’d ignored it, assuming all his family drama had caused his inner turmoil. Hugh’s call had brought all the nightmares of the last six months rushing back to him.

As they swerved around a corner, Valor got his first view of what had happened to the beautiful little restaurant.

Smoke drifted above a partially collapsed building. The fire was clearly put out, though the firefighters continued to mill about outside.

How had any of his family survived?

Valor stumbled out of the vehicle when it finally came to a stop. “Bish?”

“Val?”

He barely heard Reggie, who stopped him from ducking under the caution tape. “I have to—”

“Bishan isn’t in there. They managed to extract him safely from underneath a collapsed wall. We’ve sealed it off to investigate for arson and attempted murder, and your presence will only muddy the waters for us.” Reggie grabbed him firmly by the shoulder and led him over to one of the unmarked SUVs. “Let’s get you over to the hospital to see him.”

“Might need about three more cups of tea before any of this makes any sense to me.” Valor rested his head on Bishan’s shoulder briefly. “I am so glad you’re home.”

Everyone aside from Valor had been decidedly odd since Bishan’s release from jail. He didn’t like it. At all. Why couldn’t their lives return to business as usual?

Well, probably not business as usual exactly.

Nothing could be quite normal after finding themselves smack dab in the midst of a mystery of the Poirot and Father Brown variety. The police had yet to figure out who’d begun the murderous campaign against former Harrovians; Bishan was only glad they’d stopped pursuing him for it.
He’d been freed from jail two days ago.

And sometimes it still felt as though he were there.

“It’s not an anagram,” Bishan insisted pedantically. And it wasn’t. The creepy murder messages left via bolded letters in old Harrow play programs might be puzzles, but they weren’t anagrams. “They’re not already formed into words that you have to unscramble.”

Valor had spread out the multiple not-anagrams across their kitchen table along with the two that had potentially been deciphered already. “So what are they?”

“Puzzles.”

“Right.” Valor grabbed his cup for more tea. “Do you think they got the first two correct?”

Bishan glanced at the two supposedly decoded messages with a critical eye. They both seemed plausible in the context of the victims and assuming the perpetrator was indeed a former schoolmate of theirs. He found the “Shh” or “Sh” at the beginning to be odd.

Shh. Not so cleverly done. Time’s almost up. When the clock strikes one, whose name shall be crossed out?

Sh. The play has just begun. Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Lord Byron is struck down. How many more to go?

“I’m not the killer. I don’t know.” Bishan picked up one of the programs yet to be deciphered. He wrote down each bolded letter at the top of a plain sheet of paper. “They seem threatening enough to be accurate.”
Valor plucked Staccato off the table and set the cat on his shoulder. “I know you’re not the killer, Bish.”

“I know you know.” Bishan couldn’t keep the slight sharpness out of his voice. He’d never doubted Valor’s belief in him.

Valor stretched a hand out to rest on Bishan’s shoulder. “I was agreeing.”
“Oh.” He deflated slightly. Non-autistics tended to agree by repeating what had been said, something he always found a bit confusing. “Of course.”

“That is a body.” Valor stared stupidly out the window over the sink where he’d been rinsing his coffee mug, his hazel eyes glued to the obviously dead man at the corner of their garden. He dragged his fingers shakily through his mussed-up red hair. “Bish?”

“Yes, it is.” Bishan joined him with their fawn-coloured, long-haired cat, Staccato, perched on his shoulder, playing with his wavy inky hair.
“That’s a dead body in our garden.” He risked a glance at his long-time boyfriend to find him mesmerised by the sight. “I mean, it’s a corpse.”

“Very astute of you. Very. Astute. Quite astute. Incredibly so, actually.” Bishan had a tendency to repeat words when he enjoyed the way they sounded to him. He claimed it was one of his many autistic superpowers.
“Ahhh—stute.”

“Yes, I grasp the concept. Why’s a body in our rose bushes?” Valor carefully set the mug into the sudsy water, drying his hands off on his jeans and ignoring the indignant huff from Bishan. “Right. I’ll call the police, and you put Staccato in the bedroom.”

Their cat enjoyed climbing up on anyone who came into their cottage. Valor didn’t think the local constables would appreciate their uniforms being covered by their feline’s orange-sherbet-tinted hair. She also loved to disappear into the garden, something that wouldn’t be helpful either.
“Why are you calling the police?” Bishan had his phone out already.

“They hate you.” Valor fumbled with his iPhone for a second.
“Only because I set fire to cotton wool. And they think I’m a terrorist.” Bishan shuddered, obviously thinking about the offensive white fluff balls that he hated with a passion. “Val? It’s a body. Out there. In our garden.”

“Maybe stop looking at it?”

The police didn’t actually think Bishan was a terrorist. They’d had one unpleasant run-in with one of their neighbours when they moved into the small cottage in Grasmere in the Lake District. The older gentleman hadn’t appreciated Bish’s Indian heritage, their out-and-proud relationship, or the Tamboli family who’d come en masse to help the two move into their home.

Everyone else in Grasmere had been lovely to them. They’d welcomed the couple with open arms. Valor had needed the encouragement after falling out with his own family.

Ironic, in some ways, considering they’d always assumed Bishan’s traditionalist parents would be the disapproving ones. It seemed being gay and dating an Anglo-Indian had been one step too far for the son of an earl. Valor Tarquin Scott had been struck from the family; his father, mother, and elder brother hadn’t spoken to him in over a decade, not since a year after his graduation from Harrow.

By contrast, the Tambolis had embraced both their son and his boyfriend. Valor had been relieved. He didn’t honestly know how they would’ve gotten through without their support—and the help of the old boy network from Harrow.

We take care of our own.
Valor drew his attention back to his still muttering boyfriend. “Cotton wool is an inanimate object, Bish. It can’t hurt you.”

“It’s evil and must be purged with fire.” He gently set Staccato into their bedroom and closed the door. “Wicked stuff.”

“Overly dramatic twit.” Val rolled his eyes.

“It squeaks when you pull it apart. That’s not natural.” Bishan gave a full-body shudder this time. Hypersensitivity to sound was yet another of his autistic superpowers—or maybe more of his kryptonite. “Well? Call the police.”

EXCERPT!

If he says what I think he’s going to say, the line that has crawled out of so many of my dates’ mouths over the years, I’m going to vomit. Or hurl this drink at him. Maybe even both. Because God knows, I can’t survive another Joe or Sven or Oliver situation. I’m through. I’m done. Goodbye.

Somehow I manage to maintain a friendly smile as Tony continues babbling on animatedly across the table from me. We’re at the Marooned Pirate, my favorite bar—other than mine, of course—where we’ve chatted about everything from Tony’s job as a pizza delivery guy to his great-aunt’s struggles with foot fungus. I’ve managed to keep it together by wildly tossing back at least three margaritas and by internally taking notes on every single odd statement from this man, knowing Jodie will get a real kick out of the conversation.

“But anyway, like I was saying, after the whole relationship with Brad, I just realized that…”

Here it comes. The line I’ve heard too many times to count. At this point, I can see it coming from a mile away.

“I’m really not looking for anything serious, you know? Just some fun, some good sex, and all that. I mean, what are the twenties and thirties for, anyway?”

I take another swig of my fourth margarita, deciding vomiting or tossing my drink at him would be both childish and a waste of my pride.

In truth, it’s not like Tony’s my type anyway. It’s not like I got that pang in my chest telling me that this very tanned, very talkative man is the one I’m looking for. There haven’t been any sappy montages playing in my head of white-picket fences, golden retrievers, and two children running in the front yard, all to sappy music.

Then again, after all these years of dating only to have about a dozen disastrous relationships under my belt, I’m pretty sure the pang in my chest is no longer functioning. Every bone in my body has just about given up, and the only montage in my head looks sort of like a lonely horror film. I feel a bit like that scorned woman in Great Expectations, sadly watching a clock in a dusty old room.

Ocean City, Maryland, isn’t the easiest place to live if you’re looking for love. Correction. Ocean City, Maryland, isn’t the easiest place to live if you’re looking for the kind of love that’s not the one-night-stand or “just wild fun” variety.

The tourists are here simply looking for some one-night-stand fun. The rest of the regulars are either workaholics—and, arguably, I could probably fit into that category—or the ones who have sworn off serious relationships. After all, with all these new possibilities floating in every summer, who wants to settle down? Isn’t monogamy overrated?

Maybe they’re right. Maybe it’s me who has the problem. Or maybe I should blame my parents for setting the bar so high and for showing me that marriage is a beautiful idea, that settling down with one person can be fulfilling.

Or maybe it’s just all the margaritas are making it hard to think.
“Oh, hey, that’s my coworker over there. Do you mind if I go talk for a minute?” Tony asks, and I practically leap with joy. I’ve been trying to come up with an escape plan now for about a half hour.

“Not at all,” I reply, flashing him a grin to reassure him.

As soon as he’s across the room and a safe distance away, distracted, I’m out of my seat and crossing the dance floor of the Marooned Pirate, beelining for the exit as I pluck my cell phone from my pocket.

I dial her number.

“Lysander, don’t tell me you’ve quit the date already,” Jodie whines as she answers the phone.

“Hello to you, too,” I reply. “And yeah, I’m starting to worry that maybe we’re not actually as good friends as I thought. I mean, really? Tony?”

“He’s cute, right?”

“He’s cute. But the overly tanned jock type isn’t exactly my type.”

“Yeah, but your type is either boring or assholish. I thought maybe you needed to mix it up.”

“Well, we just spent a half hour talking about pizza toppings and toe fungus, in that order. Oh, and about how he’s not looking for anything serious.”

ABOUT LINDSAY DETWILER:

Join Lindsay's VIP Fan Club here and get an exclusive excerpt of Remember When for Free: http://bit.ly/rememberwhenexcerpt

An English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay's the English teacher cliché; she love cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.

She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.

Lindsay's goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she's done her job.

Lindsay's hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
