John Saul, The Stereoscope
Day of Reckoning: The Stereoscope (Blackstone Chronicles, Part 5) - John Saul

From Casual Debris.

So far the strongest entry of the series. Despite some suspense fiction cliches, Part Five of John Saul's serialized The Blackstone Chronicles is better paced and more focused than the previous books. It is through the focused narrative of this part that I became conscious that the presence of the mysterious, evil figure is distracting, adding little to the narrative, and actually decreasing the mystery element of the work as a whole, and I wonder what kind of read we would have if the scenes with the figure were excised.

Plot-wise, the main focus is on Bill McGuire, who unknowingly takes the cursed gift of a stereoscope into his home. His family is quickly (and forcefully) set up as ultra loving, with overly supportive wife Bonnie and sweet 'n innocent daughter Amy, along with the over-sized loving puppy. (Yes, yes, we can immediately foretell the fate of the beloved family pet.)

Side plots feature Oliver Metcalf learning more about his deceased twin sister's death, and on his wish to exorcise the demons of his past. Whereas Rebecca has been kidnapped and locked away in a cold room of the asylum. As these segments are brief and well interspersed, they come across as more effective than the sub-plots in previous volumes, and do not interfere with the main plot.

This level of focus should have been achieved by part four, since by then the formula of these little books have become too predictable and tired, and thereby part four comes across as the weakest; I for one hurried through its pages and paused before picking up "The Stereoscope." The denouement of "The Stereoscope" is, with slight variation, essentially the same as each predecessor, but does, with its elevated structure, act as a better precursor to the final volume than any of the previous books.

The Reckoning - Rennie Airth

1947. Britain is recovering slowly from the war. John Madden is happily retired from the police force and tending his farm. He soon finds himself drawn into a murder investigation when a victim of a bizarre shooting appeared to be trying to track him down. As Madden and his friend Billy Styles investigate further, they find that the echos of the First World War still reverberate.

You know that you’ve found a good book when you can’t wait to get back to reading it. That’s what happened whist I was reading The Reckoning. This is engaging from the beginning, opening with the murder of a mild mannered retired bank manager. I was soon drawn into the story, each character was well drawn, holding their own place and having their own importance in the story. I could easily imagine the foggy streets of post war London and the murders in particular were quite moving and sad in their descriptions, as they were told from the point of view of the victim.

I had guessed the murderer before the dénouement but this did not spoil my enjoyment. This was a gentle paced novel, despite dealing with the devastating impact of war. The topic of the events in the First World War were fascinating and made the story all themore interesting and moving for me.

The era/style was reminiscent of Miss Marple and that ilk, harking back to a bygone age with old fashioned crimes and values for want of a better phrase. This is the fourth book in the Madden series but the first Rennie Airth book I have read. I will certainly go back and read the others in the series.

We're celebrating the release of  RECKONING (Vincent & Eve #2) by Jessica Ruben! One-Click your copy and if you haven't purchased RISING, do it now while it's only $.99!

Cover by: Okay Creations
NA, Contemporary Romance

Forgetting about Eve was the plan. Finding her at a party on my college campus was the last thing I expected.

But letting her go again isn’t an option—not this time. Juggling the life I want with the one I was born into may be near impossible, but for her, it's a risk I'm willing to take.

My world has turned into a house of cards, where one wrong move can send it all crashing down…and us with it.

Eve:

Finally at a prestigious university—and on the path to living my dreams—I’ve left the darkness of the Blue Houses behind. Still, a whole new host of problems await me.

Vincent is here.

He's king of the school, complete with a society princess by his side. I thought I wanted to know what he was hiding, but unlocking his biggest secret leads me into entirely new territory laced with danger
and lust...one I’m not sure I’ll survive.

*RISING must be read before reading RECKONING.

Reckoning (Vincent and Eve #2)Reckoning by Jessica Ruben
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Eve was enjoying her time as a Freshman at Columbia University. She earned her scholarship here. The future as a lawyer is her dream, and she is almost there.

Vincent has no idea that Eve is going to turn up where he is finishing school. He is wrapped up in several things at the moment. All things he does not want to taint Eve with. How to have her and not mix those worlds?

Their love is very sexy and highly emotional. This story is high with the heat and very heartfelt. As the sparks fly in many directions, Vincent stresses out trying to keep his worlds apart so they do not collide. I am so excited for the conclusion and hope the author hurries!

"Blood Reckoning", by Glenn Trust
Blood Reckoning (The Hunters #4) - Glenn Trust

Book#4, in The Hunters series

This 4th edition has an interesting plot, populated with vivid characters and a story that is nicely written to give us all thrills needed to keep us on our toes and flipping pages. The author does a good job with the descriptions of the locale and has created enough suspense in his story for us to stay involved in the nail biting action once it started.

This is not your classic mystery it is more a psychological thriller where two sides are constantly butting heads. The story skips back and forth between the main players: George Mackey, the law enforcer and Roy Budroe , the sadistic megalomaniac. Budroe wants control of the criminal activities including the sheriff position and he especially wants retaliation against George, for being forced to flee the country. With one thing in mind, Mackey will stays on Budroe’s tail ….till he eliminates him…….and the cat and mouse game is on….

Now that the war against the law has started in Pickham County, evil and crime culminate in a clash of good versus evil and tension is felt throughout the pages. As the story moves along at a slow but steady pace, Mackey along the way faces his personal demons but by the end only one will be left standing……. I will leave the rest of this drama for you to discover and enjoy.

Although it may have been some time since I read the previous book I never felt I had missed too much. The author doesn’t linger on the pass, he just says enough to situate us, no more. I always suggest reading series in sequence, no fear installment #4 can be read on its own if you decide to pick the Hunter series here.
