The Raven Boys
The Raven Boys - Maggie Stiefvater

This review will serve for the entire Raven Cycle series.

I had wanted to read this series for a while but had been putting it off. I'd been so let down by a few series lately and I just couldn't take another heartbreak. I've had a lot of audiobook time this year and was in the market for a new one to start and this one was available from my library so I decided to plunge in. Luckly this series brought me out of that slump!

I'll admit that while I really liked the narrator and felt the voice, in general, fit the atmosphere of the setting, it took me a long time to get used to it. It was kind of like listening to Matthew McConaughey half asleep. The speech is slow and drawn out -- and again this fit the setting -- but it was so hard to stay focused sometimes. And I didn't really care for the character voices, especially some of the women. But I was finally able to let go of all that and just focus on the story.

It wasn't a fast-paced series, but I was OK with that because I was most drawn to the characters. They somehow got under my skin and I wanted to remain immersed in their world. To be one of their friends. OK, so maybe one of their mothers since I'm way too old to be in their friend circle ;)

I'm sad it's over, but I'm hopeful the plans for the TV series comes to be. (and that they don't screw it up with bad casting)

The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle #1) (Audiobook) - DNF @ 38%
The Raven Boys (Raven Cycle, #1) - Maggie Stiefvater,Will Patton

It's not that the narrator is bad, per se, his voice just doesn't fit the story or characters very well. He sounds 60-something, and this is a book about teenagers, and he has that kind of smoky, gravely voice that I suppose would work good with, IDK, campfire stories but isn't quite up to snuff for this book.

Also, I'm kind of annoyed that Blue, the only prominent female protag, is limited to a plotline surrounding her relationship status, or lack thereof, while Gansey gets a whole quest story. And Blue's power is to enhance other people's powers so isn't even useful to herself, which means she's going to end up helping Gansey on his quest to find the ley lines and yadda yadda yadda.

Maybe I'll come back and try this later in ebook format, but it's not something I'm feeling compelled to finish now.

Honestly I think my favorite book cover that I've ever seen. It's absolutely beautiful. I love it so much.

The Raven Boys
The Raven Boys - Maggie Stiefvater 3,75 stars

I had a hard time getting into the story, initially. I didn't fully relate to any of the characters, and I felt like (at least the first half of) the book lacked the required tension to keep me invested. The last couple of fifths in the book were better in this regard, and I ended up finishing most of the second half in a day. But still, two fifths do not a great book make.

Possibly my favorite characters were the adults (particularly Calla) and Noah. Ronan was a close second from the teenagers, but his asshattery is as of yet too unjustified. The Dream Thieves seems to follow Ronan more than any of the others, so maybe there is hope for him yet. In general, I'm hoping the next installment will be better, although I doubt I'll get around to reading it this month.

The "true loves kiss" storyline interests me not at all, so hopefully the story won't head too heavily toward that in the future.

//I have to crank up my rating from 3,25 to 3,75 stars, because this still sticks to my brain and I still find myself thinking of the characters and the story.
