Dominion (The Molly Stout Adventures #1) by Shane Arbuthnott
Dominion - Shane Arbuthnott

This is such a wonderful story! I'm pleased as punch that requesting the second book in this series for review, and then finding out that I needed to read Dominion first, put this on my radar. You all know how much I love a good Middle Grade book! Dominion is wonderful. Molly Stout is wonderful. So please pardon me while I gush a bit.

In this reader's opinion, the best part about Dominion is Molly herself. Although there's a lot of other parts that are definitely worth gushing about, Molly reigns supreme as the reason this book is so easy to love. I adored Molly's passion, empathy, and the fact that she had just enough reckless bravery to really make things fun. Better still, there's so much growth that happens in this book. From learning that preconceived notions aren't always healthy, to learning that it's okay to love someone and not forgive them, there are messages in this book that I found so important for this age group. Molly's family isn't perfect, her life isn't easy, but she shows how strength and perseverance are what change things for the better.

As for the setting itself, I think the technology of Dominion is truly what sets it apart from a lot of the other MG Fantasy that I've read. Instead of being Steampunk, I'd pin this book more as "Spiritpunk". Molly's world is one that floats in the clouds and sees spirits as fuel. Which, as I mentioned above, allows for this grey area that Arbuthnott really uses as part of Molly's awakening. I could close my eyes and picture massive ships floating in the clouds. To say that it was easy to get caught up in this book is an understatement.

My only issue, and it's a small one, was that there were some loose ends upon finishing. The ending felt a bit like it was rushing to tie as many things up as possible, while setting the stage for a cliffhanger. I know that there's another book on the horizon though, and so I'm willing to be patient! I'm more than happy to follow Molly, no matter where she might go.

Dominion Rising

Holmberg,Tom Shutt,Melanie Karsak,Daniel Arthur Smith,Tony Bertauski,Rebecca Rode,Cheri Lasota,Ann Christy,Becca Andre,Logan Th This is a review for Curiouser and Curiouser by Melanie Karsak.

Alice and her sister Bess was taken in by Jabberwocky who gave them a home and took care of them in return Alice was taught to steal. Alice along with other kids that Jabberwocky took all lived a life of crime with Jabberwocky being their boss. Alice and Bess didn’t like living a life crime and wanted out so when Jabberwocky is killed Alice and Bess take the opportunity to leave behind the life of crime and start a new better life for themselves.

Alice is love with one of the guys living in Jabberwocky’s home, William and when Alice leaves she tries to get William to go with her but William chooses not to leave.

Alice thinks she has left that life behind but how wrong she is when a friend gets in a little trouble and Alice is the only one who can save him. Her friend owes William a debt and Alice must do one more job for him to save her friend.

I have truly enjoyed reading Curiouser and Curiouser with a mix of Alice in Wonderland and Oliver Twist. Alice is a very strong female lead and very good at what she does. Alice has spent her life taken care of others and putting others before herself. She will do whatever she has to do to keep the people she loves and cares about safe and happy no matter what the cost to herself.

I loved the world the author created for Curiouser and Curiouser with the airships and the clockwork cats. I loved the mix between Alice in Wonderland and Oliver Twist. I can’t wait to check out more of Melanie Karsak’s Steampunk Fairy Tales worlds.

If you love Fairy Tales and Steampunk stories then you are going to love Curiouser and Curiouser. Pick up your copy today to start your adventure into the world of Bandersnatch, Caterpillar, Jabberwocky, Hatter, The Queen of Hearts, The White Queen and more.

The Last Girl (Dominion #1) (Audiobook) - DNF @ 17%
The Last Girl (The Dominion Trilogy Book 1) - Joe Hart

I'm not one to quibble over present or past tense usually, but the present tense just wasn't working for me for some reason. This is dystopian, about a virus that prevents female births, and it's set one year from now. I need my dystopian to be a lot more in the future than that. And the premise just wasn't interesting, all told. Narrator was all right.

Moving on.

I have been a fan of Marilyn Peake’s for some time now and was lucky to get my hands on her contribution to the boxed set…The Other.

The Other by Marilyn Peake is a time travel story, but she has given me a fresh and novel approach and I love it.

We begin with Cora, who is off to Roswell, but not to study the aliens. She is there to study the UFO cult, The Astral Plane, and their behavior. I like her quick wit and snarky attitude. I felt the same way she did when she went through the airport. I used to get hassled all the time and felt they treated me like a terrorist.

What starts out as a research project becomes a mystery. They’re here…but they’re not who you think they are.

Jade is a normal girl, adopted and looking for her birth mother. She’s nothing special….Right? Boy is she in for a surprise.

As I travel in the world Marilyn Peake has created, many questions rise to the surface.

If you went back in time and killed your mother, would you be born? As I thought about this, more and more questions came to mind.

Marilyn’s fantasy worlds contain the good and bad of humanity, but leave me with good feelings. She writes in multiple genres and does it very well.

The Other is so no exception. I am off on an adventure of gloom and doom, faith and hope, in a world seem through Marilyn Peake’s magical words. I was angry for the planet, angry at the ignorant characters, yet the good shines through.

If The Other by Marilyn Peake is any indication of the rest of the stories in Dominion Rising, this is a boxed set you won’t want to miss.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of The Other by Marilyn Peake.
