August 2018 Round-Up

Wow August went by so fast, I can't believe we are going into September. August was a super busy month here with back to school stuff and school sports starting, it was insanely busy and I was surprised that  still got plenty of books in, or at least more than I thought I would lol. I got some ARCs  done and I also got the first three books in the Shatter Me series read. I liked them more than I thought I would. I still have to get the reviews done for them and will post them soon. Plus I finally finished The Mine Order, took me forever and not sure why but I really liked that book.

Currently I'm working on one ARC and a book I meant to read for a while. It's just taking a bit longer since I was so busy and I need to find time to read but I'm hoping it will get better this week, when we are back to a normal routine.

For my ARC I'm reading :

Courting Darkness by Robin LaFevers

37569347

Death wasn’t the end, it was only the beginning…

Sybella has always been the darkest of Death’s daughters, trained at the convent of Saint Mortain to serve as his justice. But she has a new mission now. In a desperate bid to keep her two youngest sisters safe from the family that nearly destroyed them all, she agrees to accompany the duchess to France, where they quickly find themselves surrounded by enemies. Their one ray of hope is Sybella’s fellow novitiates, disguised and hidden deep in the French court years ago by the convent—provided Sybella can find them.

Genevieve has been undercover for so many years, she struggles to remember who she is or what she’s supposed to be fighting for. Her only solace is a hidden prisoner who appears all but forgotten by his guards. When tragedy strikes, she has no choice but to take matters into her own hands—even if it means ignoring the long awaited orders from the convent.

As Sybella and Gen’s paths draw ever closer, the fate of everything they hold sacred rests on a knife’s edge. Will they find each other in time, or will their worlds collide, destroying everything they care about?

And my other book I'm reading right now is When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

28458598

Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.

The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

There are some great books releasing next ,month and the month after and I'm not even sure when or how I will get to them all. But here are some books I'm looking forward to in September .

Wildcard by Marie Lu

29386918

Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco

30375937

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White

38255342

I don't have any real goals for September, just finish my ARC and maybe if more come in get them done as well.

Oh on a happy note. I did officially finish my 2018 Goodreads  Reading challenge, I had it only set to 50 books but YAY, If you wanna check it out here you can, I don't think I will up it at this time :)

Until We’re More by Cindi Madsen

Chelsea is smart, funny, gorgeous, and the best friend I’ve ever had. Ever since she left, I’ve been a wreck. I’ve been focused on keeping my family’s MMA gym afloat while I train and coach fighters, anything to not miss her more. But now she’s finally back, along with her grumpy, possessive cat, and things are weird between us.

By weird, I mean I can’t stop thinking about her in that way. She’s in the room next door, and it takes all my control not to storm in there, sweep her up, and bring her back to my bed. Even stranger, I’m pretty sure she’d be into it.

And this time, I’m not going to stop fighting until we’re more.

But she’s a vampire and the daughter of a Master and a Sentinel, and he’s prince of the Pack and its future king.

Reading progress update: DNF at 19%.
Outlaw (Rebel Stars Book 1) - Edward W. Robertson

I pushed myself to keep going several times but have finally given up. At times it was very well written and interesting but eventually I could not get by the bad descriptions that periodically cropped up:

"...motors whirred and clunked."

"...an orchestra of clicks, whirrs and beeps..."

" A high-pitched boop..." Is 'boop' even a word?

Is there no better description for engines than 'whirrs"? This is used regularly and I can't get by it...

Great book, great writer.
The Poisoned Chalice - James Swallow

This was a great star trek novel. Very dark. James Swallow is an amazing writer and I have always loved his novels. I look forward to more!

From a Hugo Winner?!
The Crystal Star - Vonda N. McIntyre

I really felt this book just fell badly flat. Although at times from the children's perspective, the whole novel felt juvenile with mis-characterizations of the main stars. I hope others are better.

August Reads
The Little Paris Bookshop: A Novel - Nina George,Simon Pare
Uprooted - Naomi Novik
A Thousand Nights - E.K. Johnston
The Wrath and the Dawn - Renee Ahdieh
The Kiss of Deception - Mary E. Pearson
Luxe - Ashley Antoinette Snell

I wanted to make note of the books I read in August. This will not be an in-depth post.

I'm pleased that I was able to read 6 books. I haven't been doing so well with my goal of 6-8 books a month. Because of this, I'm behind in my usual yearly goal of 100 books. I've had to lower it to 50.

I'm disappointed. However, I plan to go the rest of the year full steam ahead. I have truly realized that the Kindle Fire read-to-me function is my best friend. And instead of listening to music to calm me, when in pain, I will turn on that function and get through more books. Super Excited about this!

My spirits have been lifted. I hope you all had a good August. Here's to wishing us great reads in September!
