Implausible and shockingly violent
Pretty Girls - Karin Slaughter

I'm a bit of an outlier with this one here on BL - most of the ratings are quite a bit higher than this one.

I really like Slaughter's Will Trent series, which features a GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigations) detective who is dyslexic and functionally illiterate. This is actually fairly implausible as well - if there is one thing that is absolutely required for detectives, it's competent reading skills. Nonetheless, that bothers me very little in that series because the characters are so engaging.

Pretty Girls is a Slaughter stand-alone - the third that I've read. It is very engaging. In fact, you can use any of those silly review words to describe it: compulsively readable; propulsive action; blah blah blah.

Unfortunately, it is so violent that it is almost unreadable. If you think back to the sexual violence in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, that's what we're talking about here. This is a deal breaker for a lot of people, and I'm not kidding when I say it is violent. Violence really isn't a deal breaker for me, but this book was at the leading edge of what I can even read. On a scale of 1 to 10, the level of sexual violence is this book is 1,532,710. It's that violent.

In addition, though, the real problem that I had with the book was that it is utterly implausible. I have no problem with conspiracies that verge on preposterous, but this one, nope. It strained credulity beyond the breaking point.

I read it in about 3 hours - and it's an over 500 page book - so that tells you that it is gripping. But I didn't really enjoy the process of being gripped.

Two FREE month trial of Scribd!

Honestly, Scribd is the best. It has audiobooks, ebooks and more for one low monthly price of $8.99, but of course if you sign up through my link, you can try it for FREE for two months. It would mean a lot if you gave it a try.

Scribd has everything, from bestsellers, to old and new books and just a large collection in general. Just at a glance, I can see that they do have some new releases as well. I went to one of my  "want to read" list on Goodreads and found a bunch of those books on Scribd! It's pretty amazing.

I recently enjoyed:

Highly creepy novella, disturbing, but also sad and heartbreaking for several reasons. A trigger warning kind of book.

suicide attempt, mentions rape, baby death, talks about abortion...etc.

(spoiler show)

I've also enjoyed several R L Stine books through Scribd, some Karin Slaughter, VC Andrews & much more!

I am looking forward to listening to:

Mr Rogers & LeVar Burton!? (He's the guy from Reading Rainbow...two things from my childhood coming together.)

**Signing up through my link doesn't give me $, but it does help toward my subscription fee.**

Reading progress update: I've read 20%.
Pretty Girls - Karin Slaughter

Sometimes Karin Slaughter's work can fall a bit flat for me. Her characters aren't always the most memorable, but I'm enjoying this one. I just realised it's over 600 pages, though, and I'm a slow reader going by my fellow booklikers. I just have one request, please don't start bingo early, Moonlight Madness (sorry BT!). I want to get this finished first.

The road was long, it was painful, and it was raw. It has taken me four years to come to terms with my new reality. A life in which I live with the daily reminders of a vicious attack that has left me scarred both emotionally and physically. Years of recovery and acceptance were torn apart and obliterated the day Special Agent Nick Clark barges into my life. He says the person who attacked me and left me for dead is back. He says I was the first victim – the one who got away. He promises to protect me. But he can’t, no one can.

Nick is relentless in his pursuit and promises me the things I can’t afford to have – like hope for a future with the sexy FBI agent. But hope and love and promises can’t protect me, not when I’m next on the killer's list. Meadow Holiday is the missing piece, the woman I’ve been searching for. And it has nothing to do with her being a witness in an unsolved serial killer case I’ve had sitting on my desk for the last four years. I had no business falling in love in the middle of a murder investigation but she’s the one. I feel it deep in my bones. I knew the first time I laid eyes on the shy, beautiful woman that she was mine. Now I'm left with the daunting task of convincing her I'm enough. Can Nick save Meadow in time and prove his love can heal all wounds, or is he already too late to fix what a sadist serial killer has broken?

All the Pretty Girls (The Next Generation Book 1)All the Pretty Girls by Riley Edwards
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Nick has been haunted by a case where a serial killer has a hobby as a butcher. Then he meets the injured Meadow. Their strong when together.

Meadow has wanted Nick from afar. When they finally meet - its like fate had made it happen. The future will be brighter if they can solve the mystery that no one else can.

Seriously intense, this book has you pulled in from the very first page. I could not put it down myself. The story has a pretty quick pace, and moves along giving us all both goosebumps and a great new series to sink our teeth into.
