Awesome Romantic Suspense
Protect Me, Cowboy (The Marshall Ranch B... Protect Me, Cowboy (The Marshall Ranch Book 1) - Shelli Stevens

Protect Me, Cowboy is a contemporary romance with a western twist by Shelli Stevens. Ms. Stevens has provided readers with a well-written book populated with a phenomenal cast of characters. Sinclair is on the run from her old boss, doing any work she can and singing for extra pay. Wyatt has retired from the national rodeo circuit and is concentrating on his family ranch. Wyatt and Sin/Clair's story is loaded with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. I enjoyed every page of this book and look forward to reading more from Shelli Stevens in the future. Protect Me, Cowboy is book 1 of the Marshall Ranch Series and book 2 of The 78th Cooper Mountain Rodeo Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

The Snake Who Wanted To Be A Horse (WantsToBe) - Valerie Harmon,Carol Stevens
I am conflicted about this book. On one hand, the artwork is great. In general, the story is a good one about problem solving.

However, the ending. Look, I get that it is important to teach people to go by than appearances and to reach for what you want. The thing is that the ending to this book, where a snake does in fact become a horse is, quite frankly, a fail. It comes to close to the idea of "if you are not perfect, just get the work done" theme/idea that appears in so many things. And it is disquieting. To be fair, I doubt the author means for the story to be taken that way, but it feels that way. Don't worry if you are not "x" because there is a way to become "x". Normally, that's fine but when the snake just magically becomes a horse, it smacks of third party help or the idea that if you don't change, you don't want it badly enough (ie. According to the logic of the story, if a person was missing a hand and worked really hard at pretending they had two hands, a new hand would happen) and that is a bit dangerous.

Pretend
The Rebound - Lynn Stevens

This is book #2, in the Girls Of Summer series.  This book can be read as a standalone novel.  To avoid spoilers, and to completely understand the series, I recommend reading these in order.

Rachel is ok with being set up on a blind date.  She is used to coming in second.  She is used to being the backup.  When she explains this to Adam, however, he proposes something different that she knows will end up the same.

Adam is ready for a change.  Or is he?  His ex is always near and he needs to really be done with her.  Maybe being with Rachel is the answer.  Can he be who she needs when it is a critical time for her?

This book felt like a slow burn.  It took a bit for me to feel like it got started.  I was patient since I really loved the first book in this amazing series,  There were little cameos of the characters I had already come to love.  I cannot wait for the next installment.  I like the way this author hits the hard times head on.  I give this a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Safe
Extra Innings - Lynn Stevens

Victoria AKA "Vic" is gonna play baseball.  Who cares if it is a male dominated sport.  She signed up, showed up, and played hard.  She is gonna prove herself if it kills her.

Daniel knows she has a boyfriend, but he also knows the guy is a tool.  He cannot help but be interested in a girl who knows her own mind.  She can play baseball, and is a great addition to the team.

This book felt like is was fast paced.  I love the characters and eagerly devoured each page.  I felt like this book was a great read.  The story was rich, the characters fun to read, and the heat was just gentle.  I cannot wait to read the next installment!  I give this a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Review: "Never Let You Go" by Chevy Stevens
Never Let You Go - Chevy Stevens

Chevy Stevens's "Never Let You go was one of the most thrilling reads I've picked up in a long time. It tells the story of a mother/daughter entangled in the aftermath of an abusive relationship that took place over several years and ignites a mystery that follows them into the present day. The mother, Lindsey Nash, endured years of abuse at the hands of her ex-husband to the point where she lived in fear for her own life as well as that of her daughter, Sophie. They manage to escape, with Lindsey's husband spending years in jail in the aftermath of a horrible tragedy. Yet when he serves his sentence and gets out of prison, Lindsey realizes that the horror she once knew starts back up again, and a twisted web of vengeance ensues that has Lindsey questioning her relationships and igniting her aim to go on the run again. This doesn't bode well with Sophie, who believes her father's changed and is tired of running away from incidents that happened years before. Yet she realizes that she may be in danger as well as the mysterious incidents start ramping up, and she notes she may be a pawn in it all.

This book is heartbreakingly real and terrifying in points, particularly when it centers on Lindsey's survival of abuse and her desperate attempts at escaping her husband's twisted sense of control over her. Yet this book kept me guessing for the overarching mystery, even when there were moments when I thought I had it figured out, and it was satisfying to see the story march to its respective conclusion. As per Stevens's other novels, the writing is strong, evocative, and does well even between the perspective changes and shifts from past to present. It never felt out of place or overwhelming to me. Overall, I enjoyed this novel very much and am glad to have it as a part of my library. I definitely look forward to reading more of Stevens's work in the future.

Overall score: 4/5 stars.

Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley from the publisher St. Martin's Press.
