Meh, Even the Dog Was Meh
Stalking Ground: A Timber Creek K-9 Mystery - Margaret Mizushima

More dead bodies, more mystery, some shocking revelations. Better than book one but it still feels like the author is holding back, being safe in her writing. The characters are so well balanced, such thin before they act types, they are boring. I keep waiting for one of them to just take a chance, but then plan everything out, thinking it through before. Even the bad guys are sterilized feeling, no foul language, no outlandish behaviors they are so civil. I already bought book 3 so I'm giving it another go to pick up.

Review: Stalking Jack the Ripper (Stalking Jack the Ripper #1) by Kerri Maniscalco
Stalking Jack the Ripper - Kerri Maniscalco

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

The story's shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this #1 New York Times bestselling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.

As mentioned before somewhere, I stupidly read the second book first not knowing when I started that they connect, I thought it be different cases and different people. BUT I’m soooo happy to report that it did not take away from the experience and fun reading this book. I also should mention that while I listened to the book I also have it in paperback and read along and check out the awesome some creepy pictures in the book.

She must not have mentioned or I missed it who Jack is in book two because to be honest I had no idea… of course I had several ideas throughout reading this book but must say I didn’t expect that. I really liked her writing whole it is technically historical it also is sooo modern and fun to read. Audrey Rose is so much fun. She is strong, funny and won’t let anyone stay in her way…… she also is way ahead in her time. I don’t know what else to say about her other than she has become one of my favorite characters.

Thomas is like the perfect match for her and their bantering is just priceless and yet also very ahead of time. I just loved them and you can tell the chemistry between them is off the charts.

I also really enjoyed her uncle, not only was he rather funny he also supported her in many things and not only the Forensic Pathologist part, which by the way was also super fun to read about. From a time when medicine was still very much new and researched.

I still think this would make an awesome TV show but I also would be worried that they would mess it up…. . Overall and in short I loved this book and the second book and look very much forward to book three. I rate it 5 full ★

It's so much easier to find women holding weapons....
Breath of Fire - Amanda Bouchet
Magic Triumphs - Ilona Andrews
Trail of Lightning - Rebecca Roanhorse
Dark Queen - Faith Hunter
The Myth Manifestation - Lisa Shearin
Stalking Jack the Ripper - Kerri Maniscalco
The Devious Dr. Jekyll: An Electric Empire Novel - Viola Carr

...than to find women holding flowers!

Who knew that I was such a violent creature.  :)

Stalking Jack the Ripper
Stalking Jack the Ripper - Kerri Maniscalco

This just didn't work for me at all, and I'm so disappointed. The synopsis made it seem like it should be right in my wheelhouse, but it just wasn't.

I think my main issues were with the main characters, Audrey Rose (whose POV we read from) and Thomas, her love interest. I didn't like either of them. He came off as a pompous know-it-all, and she was insufferable and judgemental. She's also supposed to be a feminist character, but it falls a little false when she's judgemental about other women who like the more traditional feminine things of the era. That whole, "I'm not like the other girls" vibe that drives me crazy. She also had several TSTL moments in the book.

The romance fell flat. I felt the pair had zero chemistry.

The identity of "Jack" was obvious extremely early in the book, though the author tried to lay a false trail by dropping anvil sized hints that it was actually someone else.

I didn't hate the writing, and I did like the part where Audrey Rose stood up to her father, and the bonus chapters from Thomas' viewpoint at the end of the book were good, as well. I wish we'd been able to read from his POV sometimes during the novel. Maybe I'd have found him a bit more likeable, but by the time I got to the bonus chapters, it was too little, too late.
