Synopsis

Colby Fischer is a bad boy with attitude and a chip on his shoulder. As a senior at a Southern California college, he knows this may be his last shot. He doubts he’ll ever become the hockey legend he dreamed of being as a kid, but he definitely doesn’t want to be an accountant. Things get interesting when he’s asked to train the new intern at his step-dad’s firm, who happens to be the troublemaker from his econ class. And the one guy Colby can’t stand.

Baseball is Sky Jameson’s life. He’s happy to be back at Chilton for his senior year, but he’s burned a few bridges and has a bit too much free time off-season. He could use the money and something to keep him busy until his season begins. But his accidental crush on his prickly coworker could be a problem. Colby is straight and Sky is in the closet. Their timing isn’t great, but the intense attraction is hard to deny. With his final season on the hockey team in the balance, Colby may have to decide if he’s ready to come out on the ice.

Excerpt

“What position do you play?” Sky asked, pealing the label off his water bottle.

“Right wing. Forward. Think of soccer where the front line moves the ball down the field. We do the same with the puck.”

“I know how it works. I’ve watched a lot of hockey.”

“Have you ever played?” I asked.

“No. Baseball was always number one for me. Besides, hockey is kind of…rough. There’s always a fight. And the game moves so fast, it’s hard to see the puck sometimes.”

“Not if you pay attention.” I raised my beer bottle in a mock toast and grinned. “And I like it rough.”

Sky pursed his lips and stared at me…or maybe he was staring at my throat. I couldn’t tell. “Me too. But not on the field. It distracts from the game.”

“In hockey, it’s part of the game. If you can’t defend yourself, your teammates, and the ice, you have no right to be out there. Might as well take up ice dancing or something,” I snarked, only half kidding. “And no offense, but ice dancing is a hell of a lot more entertaining than baseball. Trust me, I know. I played Little League for a couple of years. I used to beg the coach not to put me in the outfield. Geez, you could take a fuckin’ nap out there some days, you know?”

Sky laughed. “Fuck you. You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. Baseball is a game of strategy.”

“Strategy my ass,” I huffed, smiling to take the sting from my words…even though I kinda meant it. “It’s one of those weird sports where everyone gets pumped when nothing happens. ‘Oh, it’s a no-hitter. That’s amazing!’ Sure…but nothing fuckin’ happened! No one hit the ball, no one rounded the bases, no one slid to home plate. No one had to even wash their damn uniforms! And you know why?”

“Why?”

“’Cause nothin’ fuckin’ happened,” I replied, taking a long sip of my beer as I let the sweet sound of Sky’s laughter wash over me.

God, he had a great laugh. It made me like him a little more. And yeah, as much as I didn’t want to admit it, I liked Sky. He was smart, talented, easy on the eyes, and he had a sense of humor.

“That just proves baseball players are smarter than hockey players,” he taunted.

“Said no one anywhere ever.” I held my hands up in surrender when he flipped me off. “Hey, I’m kidding. I like baseball fine. I told you I follow the Tigers. I still have the jersey my dad bought me when I was ten. Dude, I’d wear it if I still fit in it. What’s your position?”

“Shortstop. I’ve played almost every position at one time or another but I like it the best. You gotta be quick, have a strong arm, and good instincts. I also have a long wingspan. That helps.”

“Makes sense. I don’t know about wingspan, but you gotta be quick in lightning fast hockey too with quick reflexes. Big ol’ quads help.” I smacked my thighs and chuckled. “Mine are kinda huge.”

Sky gave me a lopsided smile. “I noticed. It’s hot.”

“You think muscular legs are hot?”

“I do. Believe it or not, it wasn’t your sweet personality that made me look twice. It was your thighs.”

I snickered. “That’s weird.”

“Maybe, but it’s true. You always wore shorts to summer school. I used to come in a little late so I’d get a good look at you before I sat down. I purposely didn’t sit next to you because I knew I’d get caught staring. And the one day I did, you were the one who got caught.”

“Are you telling me that all this started because of my thighs?” I asked, narrowing my gaze suspiciously.

Sky nodded. “Basically…yes.”

We held eye contact for a moment then busted up.

And when our laughter faded, the mood changed all over again. I felt that same crackle of heat and sexual energy I always did when I was around him, but this time I knew what it was. And though I might have been unsure, I wasn’t afraid.

I leaned forward on my barstool and motioned for Sky to close the distance. He brushed his nose against mine. I held my breath and waited for him to make a move. Any move at all. When he blinked, I licked the corner of his mouth then pressed my lips to his and closed my eyes.

Out on the Ice (Out in College, #5)Out on the Ice by Lane Hayes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is book #5, in the Out In College series. This story can be read as a standalone novel. For reader understanding, and to avoid spoilers, I recommend reading this series in order.

Colby meets Sky in a summer class. They start as enemies, or so Colby thinks. Once they do get to know each other, the attraction intensifies and nearly burns him up.

Sky has no idea how to fix this confusion with Colby. It does not seem he will ever have a chance to be more. Is what he is feeling enough to take a chance on someone for a future?

This was a solid addition to the series. In the long awaited Hockey version, the MC's are both busy with their own sports and schedules when they meet in class. I loved the banter. I found the pace good, the heat at a good level, and the story read so good I could not put it down.  The narrator does such a wonderful job on all the voices.  They are so distinct and different, its almost like watching a movie from another room, where you cannot see the picture.  Makes for a fun listen and a solidly good read.

Before I start this review...let's just take a minute...
Starting from Scratch - Lane Hayes,Michael Pauley

to admire the view (and by view I mean cover)...ok, now let's move on...

"Starting From Scratch" is the next installment in the series 'Starting From' by Lane Hayes and for me the second book was a bit more enjoyable than the first one. I'm not saying that the first one was bad, just that for me this one was a little bit better.

We met both Charlie Rourke and Ky Baldwin in "Starting From Zero". Charlie became the manager for the band, Zero. While Ky is the bass player for Zero. Charlie's sure that Ky hates him, but Ky knows that the problem is Charlie hates him...are you seeing the issue here? Two men making assumptions about each other...it's enemies to lovers...it's a match made in heaven or it will be once Ky wins Charlie over.

Charlie's determined to make Zero a success without the help of his successful producer father. He needs to do this on his own merit...he knows his dad loves him and means well but for all of his bravado and confident exterior Charlie needs to show not just the world but himself that he can make be a success based on his own merits.

Ky long ago walked away from his father and learned to make his way in the world without any help from his father and he has no desire to see that change. Ky's a skater boy bassist with a quirky sense of humor and he's silly and annoying and while Charlie's trying not to admit it, in his heart he knows that Ky's perfect.

I loved Charlie and Ky together they worked for me. Their journey from enemies to lovers was filled with banter and snark with passion and heat. These two complimented each other perfectly. Charlie was heat and passion, Ky was cool and calm...except when he and Charlie came together...then everything became scorching hot!

Michael Pauley was once again the narrator for this story and I have to admit I can't really say that the narration worked better for me so much as I listened to this audiobook right after 'Starting From Zero' so I think I'd started to become a bit inured to the things that had previously bothered me. So this combined with the fact that overall I enjoyed this book a bit more than the first one resulted in a better overall rating from me.

So here's the deal...
Starting from Zero (Starting From #1) - Lane Hayes,Michael Pauley

I was offered the chance to review the audio book 'Starting From Scratch' and it sounded interesting so I said "ok" and then I decided that even though it's different MCs I wanted to hear the first book as well so...off I went to audible to get me a copy and now here I am to review said copy.

Just when Justin Cuevas thought his rock star was rising it crashed or more accurately it went up in a blaze of glory...his relationship ended with scandal, his band is little more than ashes but Justin's not ready to give up on his dreams.

Justin's determined to get his career off of the ground one more time. He just needs to stay focused without getting distracted by the past or Gray Robertson, the sexy songwriter who's only suppose to be a one night stand but gets under Justin's skin without even trying and when he proposes that they collaborate and write a love song both men begin to realize that maybe they could collaborate on more than a love song...maybe together they could find a whole love story to tell.

Gray's got a successful career...he's written hit song after hit song, he's worked with some of the industry's biggest names. He doesn't have anything to prove but when his friend ask him to collaborate with an essentially unheard of performer who turns out to be the one night stand that Gary can't seem to forget Gary sees the opportunity to have more than one night and he's only too willing to take advantage of it.

"Starting From Zero" is the start of a new series by author Lane Hayes and it's got a big job to do. Not only is this Justin and Gray's story but we're also introduced to the rest of Justin's band as well as the people who matter in Gray's life all of whom offer the potential for some more awesome stories in this series and all of which was done without over shadowing what was happening between Justin and Gray.

While I've enjoyed several of this author's stories in the past and I really liked this story I have to admit that the narrator's voice just wasn't quite working for me.  Mainly there were a couple of sticking points for me the first one being that the voices weren't consistent in how they sounded so occasionally I found myself doing a bit of a double take as to who exactly was talking and the second issue for me was that occasionally it sounded like the narrator's voice was speeding up as if he was in a race to get to the end of the sentence. This was not my first time listening to an audio book narrated by Michael Pauley, so I'm hoping this was a one off in terms of my listening experience.

'Starting From Zero' got off to a bit of a slow start for me but before I knew it I felt like I was fully engaged in the story and I have to admit that while I thought that the 18 year age gap was going to be a bit of an issue for me, that concern was dispelled fairly quickly and I found myself not only liking Justin and Gray but liking Justin and Gray together as a couple. They balanced each other very nicely and the banter and interaction between these two men was fun and at times simply hot, hot, hot!

"Starting From Zero" was a solid 4 star story, but sadly for me the audio didn't work out quite as well as I'd anticipated so it's getting 3.5 stars from me and we'll see what happens with "Starting From Scratch".
