Release Day Review! Auden (Were Zoo #7) R.E. Butler!

Hello, Readers! Welcome to Monday! Today I am sharing R.E. Butler's new Were Zoo release - Auden! Enjoy & don't forget to Auden to your shelves!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ABOUT THE BOOK
In the tradition of their people, owl shifter Jessica Thompson’s parents have chosen a mate for her. On the way to a celebratory hunt to meet her arranged mate, a group of hunters spies them and she’s separated from her nest among the flurry of bullets. Injured and disoriented, she crash lands in a zoo.
Wolf shifter Auden James has lived at the Amazing Adventures Safari Park his whole life and loves working on the VIP tours they’re hopeful will bring soulmates to the shifters who live in secret underground. When he takes a shift as a security guard, he hears something crash in the lion paddock and rushes to the scene, where he finds an injured owl. As the owl slowly changes into a beautiful female, Auden knows he’s in the presence of his soulmate.
But Jess’s nest isn’t about to let her go without a fight. When a betrayal puts everyone in danger, will Jess and Auden survive?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Readers can take a delight, charming and suspenseful trip to the zoo in this paranormal shifter romance. Jessica and Auden are strong, captivating shifters that easily draw readers to them and then charm their way into readers’ hearts. The romance is sweet and sizzles with lots of electrical chemistry and passion but the relationship is not a walk in the park as species differences and family demands get in their way. The suspense builds throughout this fast paced story as betrayals place everyone in danger. I can never visit the Were Zoo enough as the concept itself is unique and quite fascinating and full of appealing characters that win me over every time, so while this story may be on the short side it is quite an enjoyable and energetic read that keeps readers glued to its pages.

Release Week Review! Rise of an Alpha Moon (Rise of the Arkansas Werewolves #8) Jodi Vaughn!

Thanks for joining me, Readers! Today, I am sharing another new release with you. Rise of An Alpha Moon - part 1 of a 3 part serial by Jodi Vaughn! Enjoy & don't forget to add Rise of Alpha Moon to your shelves!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ABOUT THE BOOK
***PART 1 of a 3 PART Serialized Novel!!***
Pack Master, Barrett Middleton gave his life in exchange to protect his Wolf Pack from a blood debt. He was dead. Supposed to stay dead. But his Guardian and a powerful Fae took it upon themselves to resurrect him. Ryker and Celeste Nordstrom don’t understand what they’ve done.
Barrett struggles to walk the line between being alive and being dead. When a beautiful female wolf named Jacey comes around, he’s faced with a choice—give into the desires of his heart and soul…or stay away and protect her from the darkness threatening to swallow Barrett whole.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is a serial romance with three parts and Barrett’s story is off to an engaging and suspenseful start. Barrett of course, is struggling with walking that very fine line between being alive and being dead and things only become more complicated when a the beautiful wolf named Jacey comes around forcing him into making a difficult choice. Both Jacey and Barrett are strong, captivating characters and they easily draw readers into their story and ensure that readers will want to know the whole story. Their romance is a slow burn so far, but their chemistry sizzles with electricity and their attraction to each other is formidable with the both characters immersed in emotional turmoil from the past, the story grips the readers’ hearts while assuring that these characters are very alive.

The plot is steady to fast paced and keeps readers in suspense from beginning to end as it flips from Barrett and Jacey to The Arkansas Werewolves and what’s happening there which is quite emotional as well as thrilling. The author portrays the characters and the turmoil of the story with great detail which brings the story to life and ensures that readers easily connect with the characters. I am not fond of serials too much, I was completely caught up in this book and am looking forward to discovering what happens next.

ABOUT THE BOOKS

Splinters
The Prospero Chronicles Book 1
by Fiona J.R. Titchenell & Matt Carter
Genre: YA Horror, SciFi

Under normal circumstances, Ben and Mina would never have had reason to speak to each other. He’s an easy-going people person with a healthy skepticism about the paranormal; she’s a dangerously obsessive monster-hunter with a crippling fear of betrayal. But the small Northern California town of Prospero, with its rich history of cryptid sightings, miracles, and mysterious disappearances, has no normal circumstances to offer.

When Ben’s missing childhood friend, Haley Perkins, stumbles out of Prospero’s surrounding woods and right into her own funeral, Ben and Mina are forced to work together to uncover what happened to her. Different as they are, their unlikely friendship may be the only thing that can save the town, and possibly the world, from its insidious invaders.

“A snapping, crackling, popping homage to classic horror.” —Kirkus Reviews.

“Whip-smart dialogue... genuinely terrifying Splinters, the descriptions of which will have fans of monster films utterly enthralled... A promising series opener, this will satisfy those readers who like their scary stories to be as clever as they are chilling." —KQG, the Bulletin of The Center for Children's Books.

“The stakes are high. The action is intense." —Washington Independent Review of Books.

Shards
The Prospero Chronicles Book 2

When autumn descends on Prospero, California, Ben hopes the normality of the new school year may offer a reprieve from the town’s paranormal horrors. Mina knows all too well that there are no reprieves and no normality to be had in Prospero, but even she can’t prepare for what the coming year holds.

On top of the vivid hallucinations that have plagued Mina since the attack on the Warehouse, and the brewing Splinter civil war that threatens all of humanity, inside the walls of Prospero High, Ben, Mina, and their expanding Network face a vicious campaign to destroy their friendship, and a mysterious assassin picking off human rebels – an assassin with powers like no Splinter they’ve fought before.

Ben and Mina’s one hope rests with a mysterious old man hiding in the woods outside of town; a living legend who may be able to teach them how to fight this dangerous new breed of Splinter. That is, assuming he doesn’t kill the pair of them himself.

“Titchenell and Carter hold nothing back in this solid sequel that thrills and expands on its predecessor. Aided by swift writing, relatable characters and unexpected scares, Shards is a chill-inducing delight.” —David Powers King, co-author of Woven.

“Maintaining the same level of popcorn-munching fun, Titchenell and Carter are taking The Prospero Chronicles in a promising direction.” —Joe Dell'Erb, Washington Independent Review of Books.

Slivers
The Prospero Chronicles Book 3

Ben

Growing up is hard, and growing up in Prospero is even harder, but I think we manage. I mean, yeah, my friends and I spend more of our time fighting a race of shapeshifting aliens than we do hanging out, but we have our fun. We go to parties, help each other with our classes, maybe even fall in love…

I’ve no illusions that we live ordinary lives, but they’re our lives, and I’m going to make sure we make the most of them whether the Splinters want us to or not.

Mina

The truce is temporary. We will not humor the Splinters forever. It's only until the Slivers can be stopped, until the army of Shards being planted among our classmates can be disassembled, until we get our hands on the thing I'd almost given up believing in.

The humanity test.

For the chance to know, once and for all, who can be trusted, some dealings with monsters must be excusable. Inevitable. Just like this feeling between Ben and me.

And that has to be temporary too.

Stitches
The Prospero Chronicles Book 4
by Fiona J.R. Titchenell

This is Prospero’s darkest hour. The few remaining humans trapped within the quarantine zone are all but defenseless against the multiplying forces of the Sliver Queen, Locusta. With Ben missing, Aldo among the enemy ranks, and more steel plates than bones left in her body, Mina’s passing the hours drowning in morphine and throwing heavy objects at her guards.

Stripped of her weapons, her gadgets, and the Network itself, she has just one card left, hidden somewhere under her oft-sutured skin. It might be powerful enough to complete her life’s work once and for all… or to reach the one person who could make her life into more than a means to an end. But playing it will cost everything she has, or everything she believes in.

The final chronicle of Prospero waits in these pages.

Welcome Fiona! I am glad you could join us today to tell readers about The Prospero Chronicles. Are you ready to share what you edited out of the final chronicle?

**********

What did you edit out of this book?

Stitches probably had the biggest transformation from inception to final draft of any project I’ve ever worked on. I mean, it was originally going to be two books with two authors, so yeah, the cutting room floor got pretty crowded.

Maybe I should start at the beginning. My husband-slash-coauthor and I originally plotted out The Prospero Chronicles as a five part series. We signed it with a small publisher who only offered a contract for the first three books, with an option for more at their discretion. Determined but inexperienced authors that we were at the time, we decided we’d face that hurdle when we came to it and proceeded to write the first three books exactly as we’d planned them, with a massive cliffhanger at the end of the third.

Well, it turned out not to matter whether the publisher would have wanted books four and five after all, because we split with them shortly before the planned release of book three. The veritable soap opera that led up to the schism could fill more than a few blog posts, full of fishy accounting, name-calling, blame-shifting, unanswered emails, and broken promises, but long story short, the series went dormant for a long time while the rights to the characters were in limbo.

We moved on to other projects. Landed other contracts. Various exciting things happened.

Eventually, our superhero of an agent won back the rights and gave us the go-ahead to republish and finish the series independently. We created our own editions of Splinters and Shards and published the already-written Slivers, but then we had to talk about the finishing part.

We tried. We refined our outlines. We tried again. Matt’s heart just wasn’t in it. He’d grown apart from the characters, become attached to new ones in other worlds, and the publishing battle had left a sour taste in his mouth.

I, on the other hand, couldn’t let it go. Not the way we’d left it.

We agreed to condense the two planned books into one goliath of a book that would still have been quicker to finish, and Matt tried once more. He tried because he knew what it meant to me, but as any writer knows, if you can’t get excited about your own story, you’ll never excite anyone else with it. All the good intentions in the world couldn’t reignite that spark.

So we agreed that I would do it alone. That meant another replotting, to trim the ending down further and gear it more toward my solo strengths.

Things that got pruned in the course of all that include but are not limited to:

Almost an entire book’s worth of Mina and her father globetrotting in search of the Splinters’ weakness.

A whole lot of a freshly traumatized Ben trying to figure out how to run a resistance in an occupied town without her.

Half a book with the perspective divided three ways instead of two, following a third character’s efforts to stay undercover among the villains.

A quest to kill a hive of weaponized parasites.

A mercenary who could turn people to stone.

Two deaths scenes for characters who ended up surviving.
An ending for a character who ended up dying instead.

Ultimately, I think the result was a much tighter, punchier finale than we would have had otherwise, but there were some threads that didn’t end up going quite where they were expected to. I actually got as far as approving the cover art for Stitches, found myself staring at this beautifully creepy image of what was supposed to be the big bad of the whole series, and realized that her part of the story had been almost completely sidelined.

That meant another round of heavy reworking, to give her more time on the scene instead of just behind it, and a closer relationship with the heroes. The trouble was, we’d already set her up to be so dangerous that it was seriously difficult to put her in a room with anyone and justify how they would walk away alive. Matt was still consulting and editing for the series, so I went to him and said, “I need a power loader scene.”

Because when in doubt, invoke the glory of Sigourney Weaver.

What we came up with didn’t look much like a power loader scene, but it was exactly what was needed to give the final confrontation the proper significance, and it became one of the stranger action scenes in a series full of gooey shapeshifter battles, so I’m really excited to share it.

Wow! That is fascinating! What do you think, readers?

Book Tour & Giveaway with Guest Post! Thirteen Nocturnes by Oliver Sheppard!

https://www.silverdaggertours.com/

Good Morning, Readers! Today, Oliver Sheppard is joining with us to tell us all about his dark poetry! Enjoy the tour & don’t forget to enter the GIVEAWAY!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ABOUT THE BOOK
Thirteen Nocturnes
by Oliver Sheppard
Genre: Gothic, Dark Poetry
Combining lush Gothic lyricism with postmodern experimentation, Oliver Sheppard's second collection of verse, Thirteen Nocturnes, presents a nightmare vision of a world in the grip of apocalypse and shadow--a world where "a nighttime of years never-ending" becomes "a darkness severe and unbending," and where life is relentlessly "gathered up against the towering shadow of decay." Taking cues from the dark Romanticism of Poe, the decadent Symbolism of Baudelaire, and the apocalyptic tradition of William Blake--as well as the existential doominess of 20th century cosmic horror--Oliver Sheppard's Thirteen Nocturnes presents a verse vision of collapse, announcing a cold poetics of disintegration in the new dark age of the Anthropocene.
"Reading Sheppard's poetry is a little like listening to a conversation between Nietzsche and William Blake during a showing of Peckinpah's Cross of Iron. Using a wide range of forms and cultural references, Sheppard illustrates the human condition in ways that take as much account of its absence as its presence... Given the chance, Sheppard will lead you down dark and unfamiliar paths, to moments of weird beauty." --from the foreword by John Foster
NIGHT, MELANCHOLY, AND THIRTEEN NOCTURNES
by Oliver Sheppard
One of Edgar Allan Poe's most poignant poems is the brief (and probably unfinished) couplet that is usually reprinted under the title "Deep in Earth." It reads:
Deep in Earth my love is lying
And I must weep alone.
--And that, elegantly, is the poem's entirety.
Poe wrote "Deep in Earth" in 1847 while mourning the death of his young wife, Virginia Clemm. He scribbled the couplet in the margins of a manuscript for "Eulalie," which may have been one of Virginia's favorites of her newly widowed husband's works. Poe always insisted that poets should write with an eye to what he called "unity of effect"-- that is, that every poetic effort ought ultimately to leave a distinct and singular impression--a uniquely powerful effect--on the reader. Toward this end Poe felt that, despite what classicists might say, or despite what readers might think, longer poems were not necessarily more accomplished, more literary, or the most successful in their designs. Bigger was not always better. "Unity of effect" was usually achieved with fewer lines, with lines honed and sharpened to cut right to the reader's jugular.
But the emotional gut-punch of Poe's "Deep in Earth" might have less to do with the application of any high-minded literary theories than with the raw emotion that is evident behind its words. Yet the stark lines are a validation of Poe's "unity of effect" ideal nonetheless. Before I get to one of my own attempts at achieving such an effect in my new collection of verse, Thirteen Nocturnes, I'd like to offer another poem that I think achieves a forceful effect similar to that of Poe's "Deep in Earth" above.
This poem is by Sara Teasdale, from 1915:
I SHALL NOT CARE
by Sara Teasdale
When I am dead and over me bright April
Shakes out her rain-drenched hair,
Tho' you should lean above me broken-hearted,
I shall not care.
I shall have peace, as leafy trees are peaceful
When rain bends down the bough,
And I shall be more silent and cold-hearted
Than you are now.
Eighteen years after this poem was published Sara Teasdale took an overdose of sleeping pills and ended her own life. An urban legend persists that Teasdale wrote "I Shall Not Care" as her suicide note.
Teasdale and Poe had issues with chronic major depression, something I and a great many other poets have also struggled with. There are a variety of influences that went into the composition of my book, Thirteen Nocturnes, and I hesitate even now to say that my struggles with depression have been an "influence" in the same way that, say, the poetry of Baudelaire or Giacomo Leopardi have been influences on me. But my own bouts of depression have added much of the color to my verse, or have provided the impetus for it, and have informed its tone, in some individual poems more than others. The original idea behind Thirteen Nocturnes was to write a slim chapbook of thirteen poems that were either meditations upon, or were odes to, or had in some way been inspired by, the night. The project snowballed and I confined the original thirteen poems to one section of a five section collection of poetry, but I decided to keep "Thirteen Nocturnes" as the title for the overall work.
Aiming for a kind of unity of effect described above, I took pen to paper and in one of the thirteen nocturnes I tried to describe my decades-long battle with the sort of depression that William Styron in Darkness Visible called "a storm indeed, but a storm of murk":
NOCTURNE No. 2
by Oliver Sheppard
Night was my vigil; I sat it alone,
A nighttime of years never-ending,
Years by myself where light was unknown,
The darkness severe and unbending.
I came upon means in my decades-long fight
To only but briefly relieve it,
And in certain moments I thought I'd found light
But I was a fool to believe it.
Oliver Sheppard was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and lives in Texas. Critical reviews of his poetry collections have been kind: "Like listening to a conversation between Nietzsche and William Blake while watching Peckinpah's 'Cross of Iron'," reviews of his first book, Destruction: Text I, claimed. Garnering accolades from academia and punk zines alike, Sheppard's work takes cues from the cosmic fatalism of Lovecraft and Thomas Ligotti, and combines that with the lush, Gothic lyricism of the Dark Romanticist tradition.
"Sheppard's THIRTEEN NOCTURNES is gothic in every sense of the word; from the writing style, the themes, to Oliver's own influences. Without a doubt, this bountiful collection raises the bar for contemporary gothic poetry. It's rare in this day and age to find poetry written in a manner as sophisticated and profound as this. But here, Sheppard combines a down-to-earth modernism with older styles that make for a fanciful and unique experience for the reader."--Sar Blackthorn, CVLT Nation
