Goaltender's Penalty by V.L. Locey Review
Goaltender's Penalty - V.L. Locey

It was supposed to be a fun-filled night at the arena, cheering on the Harrison Hawks, ogling the blond Acadian god/goalie in the crease, and maybe, if he was really lucky, catching an airborne puck with his hands and not his face.

Unfortunately for Daryl Hamilton, his first minor league ice hockey game ends with him catching something with his face, but it's not a puck. It's the fist of his dream goalie, Ryan Amirault. But while his nose may not be thankful for the badly timed autograph request, Daryl can't say that the rest of him isn't pleased with how things are turning out.

Not only is Ryan turning himself inside out to make things right with Daryl, the spark of attraction between the two men is slowly blazing up into a roaring inferno. The only problem – aside from two black eyes – is that Ryan isn't out, there's a viral video of the nose-crunching encounter, and a rather curious sports reporter is snooping around the daycare center where Daryl works. If their new love can survive all that, it will survive anything.

Story also appears in the Scoring anthology

Review

Single dad and star defenseman Matt LaRue lives for his kids and hockey. He's had one failed marriage and doesn't have any interest in going through that hell again. As conservative as they come, he can't comprehend his unexplainable attraction to a free-spirited female who changes hair color more often than his boys create new excuses to avoid doing their homework.

Violet Strider is fleeing the past. She has a new start, new identity, and is hiding a big secret. Matt and Vi are a classic case of opposites attract, but neither expects the attraction to extend beyond a few hot trysts, especially Vi. Only her heart isn't listening, and her head is following her heart down a path of no return. As Vi grows closer to Matt and his boys, she fears her secret could rip them apart.

Relationships are built on trust, and Vi's house of cards is about to take a tumble. Can Vi confront her past and finally put it behind her, while earning Matt's forgiveness?

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is #9 in the Game On In Seattle series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. For reader enjoyment and understanding, I recommend reading this series in order.

Matt has so much on his plate right now. He is trying to get into the playoffs with his team, he has an ex trying to con him for money, he has no nanny for his boys, and the boys themselves are a handful. All he needs is to be attracted to the woman who is wrong for him.

Violet has a past full of secrets. She is not real good around kids. Matt puts her body on fire, so she wants a chance at a non-relationship with him. If he can stop fighting and just give in.....

This story was a good read. It has characters we love making cameo appearances too. While it did feel like it was a bit rushed to me, I loved that the characters had excellent banter. The overall pace was good, and there is such sexy humor you cannot help but love this series.

Penalty Play (Game On in Seattle #9) by Jami Davenport
Penalty Play - Jami Davenport

Jami Davenport is on a winning streak with PENALTY PLAY the ninth book in the Game On in Seattle series.  NHL defenseman/single dad Matt LaRue is conservative as it gets, but he can’t fight his attraction to tattooed covered Violet Strider.  Meanwhile, Vi is worried her past could hurt them. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for adult audiences.

I enjoyed PENALTY PLAY.  The story was thought-provoking and clever.  Matt and Vi are a classic example of opposites attract, although fundamentally they have similarities.  They are both good people that put their loved ones ahead of themselves.   Both characters had a lot of depth and grew through the novel.  They learned from one another becoming more well-rounded.

My heart went out to Vi and what happened to her in her past.  I like that she became a better person for it, instead of a becoming bitter.  Matt’s ex-wife is a piece of work, especially where their kids are concerned.  I’m glad they found Vi.  I like that she was uncomfortable around the kids at the beginning.  It was realistic considering her background.

The story was well-written and fits in nicely with the rest of the series.  As an animal lover, I appreciated how the story ended.  I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
