The Real Lolita / Sarah Weinman
The Real Lolita: The Kidnapping of Sally Horner and the Novel that Scandalized the World - Sarah Weinman

Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita is one of the most beloved and notorious novels of all time. And yet very few of its readers know that the subject of the novel was inspired by a real-life case: the 1948 abduction of eleven-year-old Sally Horner.

Weaving together suspenseful crime narrative, cultural and social history, and literary investigation, The Real Lolita tells Sally Horner’s full story for the very first time. Drawing upon extensive investigations, legal documents, public records, and interviews with remaining relatives, Sarah Weinman uncovers how much Nabokov knew of the Sally Horner case and the efforts he took to disguise that knowledge during the process of writing and publishing Lolita.

Sally Horner’s story echoes the stories of countless girls and women who never had the chance to speak for themselves. By diving deeper in the publication history of Lolita and restoring Sally to her rightful place in the lore of the novel’s creation, The Real Lolita casts a new light on the dark inspiration for a modern classic.

I read this book to fill the Truly Terrifying square of my 2019 Halloween Bingo Card.

I heard the author of The Real Lolita interviewed on the radio and was immediately intrigued. I’ve read true crime. I’ve read biography and books seeking to trace an author’s process. But this is the first book I’ve read that really combines the two and does so effectively.

When I think about Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita, I think about a work of fiction. But where did Nabokov get his idea from? It turns out that this true crime story may have provided the final details and framework for this recognized classic of fiction. Weinman has spent time in the author’s archives and has been able to connect the dots in a most convincing way.

But the author doesn’t forget the real girl--Sally Horner--and her awful predicament. Her separation from her family by an unscrupulous man and his sexual abuse of this extremely young girl. I was struck by how differently we look at society and children now--it wouldn’t be likely nowadays that a mother would send her daughter off with a person she didn’t know. It was a more trusting age, trusting that people had good intentions towards others. And yet, even in our more suspicious times, young girls still get kidnapped. Witness first person accounts like Elizabeth Smart’s My Story and non-fiction like Captive: One House, Three Women and Ten Years in Hell by Allan Hall. Indeed, the author read some of these accounts to assess what Sally’s life with her abductor might have been like.

It seems that Nabokov was interested in this theme long before the Sally Horner disappearance, but her situation seems to have resonated with him somehow. What he did was fictionalize the whole experience from Humbert Humbert’s perspective and give us an amazingly literate look at the criminal’s point of view. His wife’s notes, however, indicate that he wanted the audience to recognize the plight of Lolita in the fraudulent worldview of Humbert.

I haven’t yet read Lolita and I wondered whether I actually would, but this book makes me think that I must give it a try. Thank you, Ms. Weinman, for giving me a reason for attempting what is acknowledged to be a great novel.

Book Review for Save Grace by Rie Warren
Save Grace (Blood Legion MC #2) - Rie Warren

What a heart wrenching story this was!The story had you engrossed from the very first pages. The story was full of pain and one of acceptance but, one man fought for the both of them and for the women he loved to be free and failing was not an option.

Killian and Grace had one of the oddest courtship that I have read about but, it was cute in an endearing sort of way as Killian fought to gain Grace's trust in order get her our for the life she is currently living because poor Grace was traded and sold into sexual slavery yet again.

Grace we met in book one where she was forced to whore herself by a group of horrible people but, she also got caught up in the war between the MC and White Lair and just disappeared but, not forgotten but, yet again Grace has been thrown into yet again other sick game her master is now playing but, this time around she might not survive once its played out.

I loved Grace and Killian together as Killian wore his heart on his sleeve the entire time and they had amazing chemistry together . My heart bleed for Grace time and time again and not only for what she had survived so far but, for the pain that was coming her way yet again.

Killian and Grace had chemistry but, they also had a amazing friendship that developed into so much more.We loved that Killian courted Grace in the only way he could even if it was a bit unconventional but it was a bunch of firsts for Grace her first kiss, first date and first love and something that was freely given between a couple who genuinely cared for one another.

Overall all the story was full of suspense and had drama and villainous characters and one whooping big surprise that you never saw coming. The story was one big emotional roller coaster for both the reader and its characters. We enjoyed it.

We are enjoying this series and looking forward to our next read.

This series is quite intriguing with some unique space dragon elements that makes for a refreshing change and readers will definitely come back for more of this fascinating world.

Vampires, demons and witches! I love to write about these dark entities and the darker the better. My characters are plunged into worlds where they experience torture and mayhem, but even in a world of darkness, true love survives. I write both, sci-fi, contemporary and historical paranormal stories.

Book Review for Cry Mercy by Rie Warren
Cry Mercy (Blood Legion MC #1) - Rie Warren

Let's start off by saying this is a first time author for us an we really enjoyed our first read by them. The story was pretty much action packed from beginning to end.

The story had a great cast of MC character's that were loving, kind, protective, loved ribbing and teasing each other but, no doubt we saw the love they had between them as it was all there for those to see. These men were down right dangerous too "so", the perfect mix.

We loved Angel the man went from nailing everything he could to pretty much love at first sight but, he set his sights on one women riddled with a ton of complications. We loved how protective, kind, loving and caring he was toward Mercy from the moment he met her.

Mercy was a women who lived a life of slavery and pain and brutality and yet remained a women who was caring and loving and one who had a sense of humor and one who would give her life just to protective the ones she loved a cared about.Mercy was special because not only did she have Angel wrapped around her little finger she had a entire MC club that came to love her in no time at all.

"Our relationship had been built on danger, survival, death, and . . . limitless hope."

Overall the story had action and suspense from onset to the very end but, it was also one filled with emotion.I enjoyed the story and we are looking forward to the next in this series.

Book Review for Snatched by K Sterling
Snatched (Throttled #2) - K. Sterling

Let's start off by saying this is a brand new author for us and we absolutely loved our first story by them.I loved everything about this story and it's character's.

This story was filled with love, humor and intrigue, murder, crime syndicate drama, betrayals, brotherly love and a forbidden love story and we loved every bit of it.

We loved Dilan and Roan from the onset of the story as they started things off with a bang and had us enmeshed in the story right from the very beginning to the very end.Roan and Dilan are tied up in the crimesyndicate life and its never a dull moment for them and the only thing they both crave is a life less crazy and they want to make it happen.

Jake Tyler is a cop and a medical examiner who lands right into the middle of the O 'Shea's shit storm and an unlikely friendship forms between the two men but, Jake is drawn to the charismatic bad boy with those smoldering dark looks and bada** tattoo's and has no business lusting for the bad boy when he is a cop and Dilan is a gangster.

Dilan was one of those character's that you can't help but love with his sexy bod who's loaded with tattoo's and has a bada** aura but, we also felt his sadness and and all that weight that he constantly carried around on his shoulders but, we saw a spring in his step any time he was around the sexy Jake Tyler !

Dilan and Jake can't seemed to be able to fight the chemistry between them but, when they give into their desires things get more complicated and even more dangerous but, they are having a whole lot of fun.We loved Dilan and Jake when they were together as they were super hot together some who say smoldering ! We loved seeing them fall in love and lengths that both of them were willing to go to to keep this new relationship and the love that they had for one another alive if only Dilan out smarts and out whits the demons that follow him around.

A couple of our favorite quotes

Jake -

You’re like Robin Hood, the Candy Man and Judge Dredd! Awesome,” he said extremely sarcastically and Dilan waved dismissively."

“You don’t want to know,” he promised. It would have been a tiny McDonald’s sign, just above Roan’s pubes, and proudly declared “Over 1 Million Served”.

Overall the story was amazing and we loved it.It was fun and full of danger and intrigue, betrayals, surprises ,murder and forbidden love and drama and more than a few twists and turns and was all about second chances. The story kept you glued to that pages the entire time just to see what was going to happen next.I have to say that we laughed and cried and we were rooting for happy endings for all parties involved.

A refreshing series that we absolutely fell in love with!
